Webster City reports the Farmers National Bank trustees announce another 10 percent payment to depositors totaling about 31,000 dollars. This payment raises the total repaid to 5 percent.
Mrs. Wendell Cross, mother of a seven month old, died at her Charles City home from spinal meningitis.
Mrs. Jean LaMar of Marshalltown bought an old fashioned cutter for 70 cents at the auction sale of the effects of M. L. Stebbins Bremer county's last civil war veteran.
Ralph Seigel and Will Taylor narrowly escaped death when hay caught fire at the Illinois Central scale house in Mount Vernon Illinois. A third man pulled them from the blaze and they were treated for burns.
Elizabeth Talbott Gould aged 88 and John Wesley Gould aged 91 will mark their 71st wedding anniversary on April 7. The couple has nine children, 25 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
C Walter Olsen of Sioux City wed Christine Jensen of Copenhagen after a summer visit in Denmark. The bride arrived from Denmark only hours before the ceremony completing a 5,000 mile journey to the wedding in Sioux City.
In Cedar Falls at the Iowa State Teachers College a social science class emptied pockets to show wealth changes. Twenty four students reported a total of 100.16 dollars, more than twice the 49.95 dollars found in a 1954 exercise.
James O'Dea, driver for Rocky Mountain Lines of Lincoln, Neb., had cargo moved to a freight car after exceeding Iowa height and width limits. State Patrolman James Machholz arrested him and fined $100.
Tama county farmers approved the experimental AAA plan for the county this year by a vote of 928 to 5 percent in last week referendum. More than 94 percent of the farmers poll participated, though slightly below the 1937 approval level.
Mrs. H. C. Houghton Jr of Red Oak a former president of the Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs said she will not seek the Republican nomination for Congress in the seventh district. She had earlier announced she would not run for secretary of state.
Atty. Gen. John H. Mitchell says an independent district board can by a majority vote discontinue eleventh and twelfth grades. A high school in a school township requires voter direction to discontinue. Another opinion notes a northern Iowa case where a district may close two schools and send trade students to Ricelow Minn. Close cooperation with state line nearby.
Riverside Shines with 341 ballots as William Knebel wins mayoral race in the Citizens' ticket. Crawfordsville reelects Mayor Davidson and carries a band tax. Ainsworth reelects Mayor Marsh. Wayland reelects Mayor Bohart and approves a telephone franchise. Sunday movies lose in Wayland four to one.
Riverside voters cast 341 ballots in a busy town election. Citizens ticket wins most offices with incumbent names. Dr. W Schnoebelen fills Libenguth vacancy. Mayor Knebel leads citizens slate. other contests include Pailliotet, Marn er, Movs, Kleppfer, Waldschmidt, O Loughlin. People's ticket backs Cummings but trails in council, treasurer, and assessor races.
In Wellman the March 28 town election produced a single slate. E. C. Jones elected mayor with 85 votes, council seats filled by B. R. Steninger R. C. Winegarden J. M. Staubaugh E. N. Foster and W. S. McIntosh, each around 84 to 85 votes. Darnell re-elected city treasurer with 82 votes. Livesey re-elected assessor with 85 votes.
In Kalona March 29, 44 votes were cast in the town election. Kilmer Marner elected mayor with 43 votes. Elmer Bush 1 vote. Councilmen results: L. R. Feldman 44. Walter Gingerich 43. T. W. Knerr 43. Frank Pribyl 44. W. W. Yoder 42. Treasurer Vv. Hochstetler 42. Ferd Skola 1 vote. IV. E. Bourgeois received 43.
A hitch hiker is held for murder as votes tallied for local officials. C. Miller received one vote for assessor. Park commissioner candidates JR Conklin 42, Delmar Reece 43, Alva Kepler 42, Alvin Niffenegger 1. Local precincts show voting outcome.
In Brighton on March 29 a single ballot produced 95 votes with all town officials re elected except the assessor and park commissioner not up for vote. Dr. M. L. McCreedy will again serve as mayor as councilmen Ddd Eligin J N Irwin A HM McCarty CC D Weldin and J W Kessel were re elected. Nl Kraemer elected town treasurer L E Helmick chosen assessor and F W Johnston elected park commissioner.
In Crawfordsville the March 24 town election produced 107 votes with two tickets. On the Progressive ticket W P Davidson was re elected mayor with 99 votes. Progressives elected J C Huston C Fletcher R T Williams Clarence Davis and W W Twinam as councilmen and the Citizens ticket named R E Lease as councilman G Ro Yeager as city treasurer with 1 vote.
Former President Herbert Hoover returns to the United States after a three month tour of Europe covering 14 countries. He says war is not imminent and cites a democratic breakdown in Europe while noting defense rather than offense in the spirit of the visited states. Hoover regrets passage of the government reorganization bill but doubts it will lead to dictatorship.
In the local election R. R. Shaffer received two votes for assessor and Bruce Hanna one vote for treasurer. An issue to create a hand fund tax carried with 70 votes in favor.
In Ainsworth on March 28 two tickets Citizens and Square Deal competed with 155 votes cast. Mayor J A Marsh won re election on the Citizens ticket with 96 votes while Earl Wood on Square Deal collected 61. Citizens swept council seats including Howward Stewart 92 votes J D Rabenold 134 J B Pressley 107 and Lee Hunt 95. Square Deal winner Harold Nichols 74 votes. Treasurer A E Sands re elected 1228 on Citizens as Ray Nordyke 27 on Square Deal. Lee Norris 90 votes beat Mrs Mable Thompson 65 for assessor. Park Commissioner Wylie Anderson on Citizens won 86 to 68 over John Strain. (Continued on Page 8).

A soaking rain improved crop prospects across Iowa and followed by sunshine today. Temperature dropped with 25 to 35 degree lows forecast and snow possible tonight and tomorrow, as much of the state received drenching rains except the southwest.
A Thursday hearing before Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee involves operators of a truck hauling lumber picked up by State Highway Patrolman WH Alder. Charges include no chauffeur license for the driver Pohren of Montrose Iowa and improper license plates on the truck.

Washington county youths may enroll for CCC camps as of today. Only three of the county's twelve quota have applied, and exams are to be held with enrollment by Friday April 1.
Raymond L. Groves of Davenport judged initiatory degree work at the local DeMolay chapter. About 55 attended as committees were named for the district conclave to be held in Washington on Friday May 1 with an all day session and dance at the Rendezvous. Ezra Smith is general chairman with Applegate publicity and various others handling registration, banquet, reception and date committees.
Washington state county agents coordinate speaker series with Dabush of Washington scheduled to address listeners Thursday at 11 50 A M on Washington county topics. The program follows a pattern where county agents from various counties in the region present talks, beginning with Johnson county's agricultural agent.
In district court Judge P J Slegers hears non jury matters as petit jurors are excused until next Tuesday. A motion for more specific statement and to strike in the Britton vs Smith estate damages suit was granted. The Breakhart case moves to next Monday. Dougherty will be heard this afternoon.
Mrs. F. H. Barber of Omaha visiting Washington was struck by a Model T Ford driven by Albert Beals on the northeast corner of the square this morning. She suffered back pain and bruises, with no broken bones, after initial treatment at a physician’s office and later at the hospital.
Mr and Mrs Earl Woods and their Ottumwa daughter stayed Sunday with Mr and Mrs L Hootman, sharing a family visit at the latter's home.
In Moscow on March 29 officials announced 19 former high officials were executed after secret trials for treason and sabotage. An Arctic sea route administration probe was also disclosed over mismanagement that endangers the northern fleet. The executions are viewed as the purge’s tail end, following over 1,500 deaths in the prior year.
Key Scouts of Troop 33 head to the scout cabin Monday evening to practice cooking fire-building and tracking. Tenderfoot scouts will pass cooking and fire-building while second-year scouts test cooking and nature skills starting about 5 30 p m depending on weather.
James Burgett 58 of Des Moines pleaded guilty to first degree murder in the killing of Floyd Alloway, a WPA worker, claiming the shooting was accidental during a holdup at the back door. Accomplices Keith Young and Irving Hildreth, 20 and 19, were indicted for the same charge.
A car in a repair shop was thought to be on fire on West Madison street this afternoon. The fire department arrived at 1 39 to extinguish light smoke from tight brake bands while the vehicle was in a garage undergoing repair.
Cecil Ballew, a Washington resident described as a negro citizen, died about two o'clock this afternoon at his home on East Madison Street. He was about 45 years old and had suffered ill health for several years. The body was taken to Shere man’s funeral home. Plans for funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
Washington DPD report that a House rules committee approved a resolution for a congressional probe of the TVA. The measure, already passed by the Senate, will have a two hour debate limit.
Mrs. Leigh Soule received word of the death of her father Dr J T Conn at a daughter’s home in Lakeview Iowa. Mr and Mrs Soule left for Battle Creek Iowa to attend funeral services in the doctor’s home town now.
