A Sunday break in at the O K Welders shop in Fort Dodge damaged the business and a fire caused about 2000 dollars in losses. The safe was pried open and between 150 and 200 dollars was stolen. Firefighters extinguished the blaze before discovery.
Mystic marshal Jim Luse was in serious condition with a skull fracture after a street fight Saturday night. Sheriff Jack Bailey and Deputy Gilbert Swanson arrested two youths, Ronny Lira and George Lazaretto, who were held in county jail.
Boone city employees will receive a cost of living pay increase of ten dollars per month, approved by the city council. It is the second raise in a year and a half, and councilmen say the boost will not raise taxes.
A farm home northwest of Fort Dodge burned early Sunday killing Clifford Allard 33 and his wife Florence 30. Neighbors saw flames after 3 am and could not enter the house. The couple, married seven years, had no children and a sheriff and coroner said the cause could not be determined.
Four days remain for Wash County property owners to pay the first half of 192? taxes by April 1. First installment due. March and September payments allowed. State homestead exemption check for $60,902.70 received. county tax receipts to date $352,645.17, nearing half of annual assessments. Payments from Rock Island and Burlington roads awaited.
Allied advances in the Pacific see U S troops land on Amo and Ndrova near Manus and shell Pityilu. In Bougainville, forces repulse a Japanese counter attack at Empress Augusta bay, with 800 enemy casualties. British Indian forces resist Japanese advances toward Imphal on the India border, while Chinese troops push toward Shaduzup near Myitkyina.
Sergeant Charles Woodford, gunner on a Flying Fortress, who had frostbite treatment in an English base hospital since last November, has landed in New York and phoned his parents Mr and Mrs R E Woodford of Oskaloosa. He said his mother was from Washington and his father a former resident of Clay township, Washington county, and that he expects to be in a state.
The Milwaukee zone tax has already been paid, along with taxes for several utilities facing large bills in Washington County, indicating local settlement actions and ongoing tax reconciliation efforts.

The Washington Baptist church celebrated being debt free as a note was formally burned during Sunday service. S. W. Easter led trustees remarks, Isabel Combs held the note, and Mrs. J. N. Dodd lit the maton. The Ann Judson Society and missionary societies led fundraising with pastor Rev. Alfred Trenerry and janitor W. P. Moore thanked with gifts.
The Office of Price Administration will announce suspension of expiration dates on red and blue food ration stamps to curb end of period rush buying and token hoarding. Tokens have no expiration and housewives in some areas convert stamps to tokens to avoid expiration. Coupons remain valid as before but stamps become indefinitely usable for rationed purchases.
Washington county rural districts push county drive toward 16 700 for the Red Cross war fund. Cash on hand reaches 8 608 85 with most late additions from rural areas. City solicitors report progress and several districts post double figure contributions. total county gifts exceed 12 000 with about 4 700 still needed. A Seattle donor gives 25 and a Washington couple donates a 150 poultry brooder house for sale to raise funds.
Seventy three farmers attended the hearing on establishing a county soil district at the Y M C A with Richard Stephens presiding. The state soil conservation committee authorized a referendum to be held April 8 from 7 to 9 30 p m in eight county towns to measure 65 percent yes votes for district establishment.
Stars and Stripes concedes 12 days of brutal fighting left Cassino in German hands with the Gustav line grip nearly as strong as before the March bombing. Maple Leaf echoes the verdict calling the Cassino bid a failure while noting potential for another offensive to break the German line.
Washington county treasurer Marion George is at the National Bank of Washington preparing to replace Ray Whitehead as assistant cashier when he resigns to enter the navy next month. George will stay on until after the March tax rush to balance the books and will work at both the bank and county courthouse. Will Hipwell, current deputy county treasurer and Republican primary candidate, is expected to be appointed to succeed George.
County Auditor Walter Schroeder warns Washington county dog owners to pay the dog tax by Saturday April 1. Many owners have not yet paid and may be unaware the deadline is near.
