Iowa State college reports over 4 700 students enrolled for the spring quarter by day one registration. Registrar R Sage noted arrivals may push total beyond 5 7 thousand for a new spring record. Last spring 5 045 students attended.
Funeral services for Mrs Ed H Jones oldest native born Williamsburg resident and daughter of Richard Williams founder of Williamsburg will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Congressional church.
The Anita Evergreen Cemetery association plans to plant young white birch trees at the local cemetery to replace those dying from the last few years. Birch trees had been set out 40 years ago and thrived due to careful planting and maintenance.
Ottumwa reports three city firefighters still hospitalized after a blaze that swept the Hofmann drug store and office building causing damage estimated at 200000 dollars. Fire Chief Bernard Meany and Captain Ray Wilson were in fair condition after smoke inhalation, and Fireman John Burke was treated for a possible rupture. Salvage work progresses and several safes were removed from the ruined offices.
William Ich 46 Logan attorney and active Iowa Democrat was struck by a failing to stop vehicle after Welch car went into a ditch. Ich received a skull fracture and was hospitalized in good condition at a local facility.

Donald Pyle, 22, Haggey farmer, had his right leg amputated at the thigh after a tractor overturned while being towed to Knoxville for repairs. He was starting independent farming to support his wife and infant, and attempts to jump clear led to the injury as the rear wheels locked and the machine flipped.
In Des Moines a two day extension of time was granted for Walter H H Rhodes 28 to file briefs replying to the states arguments against commutation of his death sentence for the 1957 killing of his wife in Iowa City. Rhodes attorneys had planned to file Monday.
Boone's new city hall costing 185000 dollars will host an open house when mayors and city councils from 150 neighboring towns tour the building. City officials will serve as guides during the event.

County towns held elections with Riverside reporting 433 votes cast among 380 to qualified voters. Mayor Edward Yeegy won on Citizens ticket. councilmen and officers split between Citizens and Peoples tickets, with several incumbents re-elected and many write-in ballots noted. Other towns like Wellman Brighton Kalona and Crawfordsville reported varying turnout and ticket results among listed officials.
In SE Paz Bolivia on March 26 the government declared a state of siege to counter a dissident army faction revolt. President General Quintanillas said several revolutionary acts were protected as troops with tanks and machine guns surrounded the presidential palace and quashed unrest in Legaz, with the government claiming control nationwide.
A two car crash on highway 218 a mile and a half north of Crawfordsville near the Clarence Lowe home involved Mrs. Rollie Optenberg and a Whetstine of Washington. All three occupants suffered painful bruises and lacerations but none were seriously injured. Both cars were heavily damaged.

Washington city council approves an ordinance to license junk yards, set a $15 annual fee, and establish rules on storage distance, fencing, and sale restrictions. Junk dealers must obtain a license from the mayor, conduct screenings, and face penalties up to 30 days in jail or a $100 fine.
For the second time in three months Mrs. Laurene Hagist’s home caught fire, this time the Hayes estate on West Third street suffering damage estimated at 400 to 500 dollars. Fire officials attributed the blaze to a roof spark and reported the upper interior damaged while the chimney and contents were secured. residents remain living in the home as repairs are planned.
Harriett Fay Bishop Waters died at 12 15 today at 521 South Ninth avenue after four months illness. The body was taken to L A Jones funeral home for arrangements. Survived by husband Oscar Waters and children Katherine Gunderson, Daryl Becker, and Lucille Kolosick. sister Mary Bishop also listed. She was born February 8 1886 in Indiana and lived in Washington since 1903.
Bernard Bartholomew of Iowa City, about 19 or 20, is to appear before Justice of the Peace J. B. Bovee Thursday at two in the afternoon on a charge of defacing a school building. He was arrested by Iowa City police at the request of Washington County officers and posted $200 bond. The alleged act involved throwing a board through a window of No. 1 rural school in Lowe Township near Riverside on Sunday evening breaking glass and part of the sash.

Dr Tarrett head of the Washington County Health Unit showed a film titled Three Weapons to a Rotary audience. The film traced syphilis history and a local program to control the disease. Dr Barrett spoke informally urging routine blood tests for diseases and stressing long term treatment to curb spread. Henry Bailey chaired the program.
