In Des Moines Roy Coop received a delicate ce meral operation after surgeons removed a chicken bone from his throat. He is expected to recover though he was in critical condition during the procedure.
Parsons College officials upheld a five day per week compulsory chapel schedule after notifying student leaders that a three day optional attendance plan would not be granted. Students protested in December, missing several days before returning as faculty agreed to review their demands.
Iowa City readers will hear University of Iowa halfback Ozzie Simmons perform as a radio singer in a premier appearance. Simmons, a noted football star and jazz drummer, will croon melodies and show tuneful versatility during the broadcast.
Miss Elean or Rickhoff rushed to cast her first vote for mayor but found the door locked. She believed a conspiracy kept the younger generation from voting and later realized she was one week early for the election.
Cedar Rapids janitor Guy M Schultz spent 30 minutes calculating his state income tax and concluded he owed exactly one cent. He then wrapped a copper and sent it to Des Moines as payment, noting the tax cost three times its amount.
One hundred delegates officers and laymen of the Nazarene church attended the annual Iowa convention at Centerville. On Wednesday night J. B. Chapman one of four international superintendents of the Nazarene denomination spoke.
Chariton resident Helan A. Bradford takes over teaching duties at Bethel rural school after the withdrawal of eight of twelve pupils by parents last December and the suspension of Sarah Gookin’s teaching certificate for incompetency. The nine pupils rejoin the class under Miss Aytes Samuelson, the new teacher chosen after the certificate cancellation.
Des Moines school teachers vote 730 to 133 to adopt a new pension system to replace the insolvent old plan. The system starts immediately and pension deductions begin on April 1, as announced by acting schools superintendent A. W. Merrill.
The city and three private parties reached a settlement to extend the north south runway by 600 feet. United Airlines has curtailed service since Monday, with officials saying flights would resume after land is graded and fenced, a process expected to take about a week.
Mrs. B F C Chamberlin, mother of Clarence Chamberlin the aviator of the New York to Germany nonstop flight, died at her Dennison home after a two day illness. Clarence Chamberlin was acclaimed after Lindbergh's Paris hop.
The county plans a series of 7 30 PM township meetings April 1 to 3 to inform residents about the new soil conservation administration replacing AAA. Attendees include Patterson Amos Stout Norman Knotek and County Agent Roudabush. Each meeting lists a township chair in charge and a local venue.
Arrangements were made for a Republican gubernatorial candidate to speak at the courthouse in Washington at 7 30 p m on Wednesday evening. State Senator George A Wilson of Des Moines will headline the event, noted as a leading candidate and gifted speaker in the last legislature.
Clarence Timmins of Cedar township announces his candidacy for the county board of supervisors. He plans to run in the June primaries on the Republican ticket for the term starting January 1 1927. Timmins has long served local roadwork and 60 years farming Cedar township, aligning with the Republican party.
Two men were killed when struck by a Milwaukee freight train in Muscatine today. Charles Wiegand aged 36 and a companion were believed to be en route to work on a Mississippi dam construction project near the accident site.
Born near Conesville he grew up on a farm then lived in Muscatine. He served in the army in World War I and the last four years as mayor of Muscatine. Last year he led the Iowa League of Municipalities as its president.
Two hours were needed to secure a jury for the case of W H M Jordan versus Db C C Schantz arising from a collision near Columbus Junction on the night of Nov 8 1933. The trial began in Washington county district court in Ivan with a new trial granted. The panel includes K B bk Giv ans Lee Craig Ethel Nicola Leonard Lintz John Kkubal William Tear Lily Moore Otto Suter Dora Masson Jomo Winega J K R Griggs and George Westen with petit jurors excused until next Monday at two o clock.
Rev. Carl W. Klein of Washington and Valley St Pauls Evangelical churches died at Burlington this week while attending a meeting of pastors in southeastern Iowa of the Evangelical Synod. He was elected president of the organization which includes about 180 pastors in the region. They hold semiannual meetings.
A calf on Frank Iddings farm near Oak Iowa was born with its heart in its neck. Veterinarians say aside from the misplacement the animal is normal and healthy.
Hill Sitler argues with Ray Minick Jr over saving money. Sitler favors dimes claiming they yield more coins than silver dollars, saying you get about twelve times as many dimes as silver dollars. He states his preference clearly.
A dynamite train blew up at Culnenado railway station in the state of Mexico killing 20 people and wounding 60. The blast demolished the Culnenado station and destroyed 10 freight cars. Injured were taken to the hospital at El Oro. The dynamite was bound for El Oro mines and fire in a car caused the blast. A restaurant and several warehouses were in the affected district.
A five percent dividend on Series A debenture bonds and seven percent in the home builders department await disposition at the Washington Loan and Trust company. Those entitled may call at the offices to collect checks now. Dividends are separate from the bank’s regular department and will be paid by trustees per court orders.
William Zunkel, examiner in charge of the closed Security Savings bank at Wellman, announces a ten percent dividend payable at the bank building on March 30 and 31. This marks the bank’s third dividend, totaling 18, Hon. urged all holders to call for their checks on those days.
Iowa Democrats aim to show strength at the state party convention on April 3 in Des Moines by sending larger delegations while keeping total voting strength at 1,826. Plans include increasing national convention delegates from 22 to 44 with 22 voting, likely backing Roosevelt. Fred Biermann to keynote. Birmingham cites expanded congressional presence and possible additions from Des Moines and state leaders.
James H. McLafferty former California congressman told a Washington county meeting to organize Republican Volunteers of Iowa at the courthouse. He warned of rising government spending risking debt and urged immediate county organization to back a Republican victory this year.
Washington high school students swept the sub district defamation contest last night at West Chester High. Ora torical winner Lawrence Whisler. dramatic winner Charles Bear. humorous winner Craig Huston. Columbus Junction took seconds with Jack Huston Ruth Weber Elizabeth Thorne. Participants came from Grandview Wapello Wellman West Chester Washington and Columbus Junction. Judge John Harlan of Sigourney presided.
Bedford, March 26. Dr Seth Walton testified at Floyd Horton’s murder trial that Horton described his wife as suffering no pain after she died, contradicting expected strychnine poisoning pain. Walton said Horton resisted sending the stomach for Iowa City analysis, and he went to the farm with Coroner Floyd Shum to view the body.
Chairman Roger Sherman announces county relief contributions have risen to 21500 plus donations since yesterday. The fund for the Eastern Sstéles relief is now over double the 1050 allocation, with further contributions expected as residents urged to give. The list includes small gifts from multiple locals and organizations.
The Chamber of Commerce hosts a Treasure Hunt opening this evening with window displays of spring merchandise in Wash ington stores. Gifts labeled with numbers will be distributed as the high school band plays at 7 30. Unclaimed gifts stay in windows until Saturday evening.
