The City Council appointed Sree to fill a vacancy on the Library Board left by Mary Berry who has moved away. Mrs. Elliott has accepted another position.
Night burglaries in Washington include thieves kicking in the Firestone Store front door at 1404 East Washington St and taking four black and white television sets. Separately, about $90 was stolen from vending machines at the Standard Service Station 1061 West Madison St after entry via a broken side window.
Robert Lee Farley of Mt Pleasant was given eight years in Fort Madison State Penitentiary after a jury found him guilty of manslaughter for a traffic accident near Mt Pleasant on Oct 31 1971 that killed 14 year old Dwight David Shahan. Judge Ira F Morrison imposed the term and fines of 100 dollars plus costs.
Democrats convene around Iowa to pick 34 of the state's 46 delegates for the Democratic National Convention. Observers rate Sen. Edmund Muskie of Maine as most likely to lose support, though officials say defections would be small.
A 2 year old Cedar Falls boy, Ryan Michael Meyers, died Friday when a truck backed over him near his UNI campus home. The driver, Timothy Caswell, 22, faced no charges yet as investigators continue the probe.
Johnson County State Conservation Commission officer Wendell Simonsen said extensive fish deaths occurred in the Iowa River near the Coralville reservoir due to low oxygen from decaying organic matter. He added the water level drop intended to reduce flood risk worsened the die off, with carp buffalo and catfish most affected.

An addition to a livestock building for the 1972 Fair was also approved with labor to be provided by board members.
A crowd over three hundred attended the opening night of the high school production of Christopher Marlowe's Dr Faustus. Director Mike Kramme said audiences left happy with what they heard and saw as the show used dramatic special effects with characters appearing in smoke and flames signaling Faustus descent. The final performance is at 8 p.m. tonight with many seats still available.
The 1972 Iowa Legislature ended after a brief session on a Friday night with adjournment on the 55th working day. The Senate and House faced final votes on key bills including equal rights for women and a controversial World Food Fair planning authority.

U S command says two Air Force pilots are missing in the Laotian panhandle after an F4 Phantom crash on a bombing mission. In the same area Communist gunners fired a SAM at two American fighters. Phnom Penh faced a second rocket attack with nine 122mm rockets. no casualties or major damage reported. Guerrillas ambushed a South Vietnamese convoy near Kompong Trach, wounding eight, capturing 28, and seizing equipment.
John McDaniel announced his candidacy for sheriff at a Democratic fund raising dinner at the Ezra Smith home. He urged a full time common sense sheriff who stays accessible and leads with experience in law enforcement. McDaniel is a Washington High School graduate who studied at St. Ambrose College and Iowa Central Community College and served four years in the U S Air Force including time in Vietnam. He remains active as an air policeman in the Iowa Air National Guard in Fort Dodge.
