New Streamlined Train Service to California Planned by Rock Island
The Rock Island and Southern Pacific announce a multi million dollar plan for streamlined service on the Chicago to Los Angeles Golden State route via El Paso and Southern Arizona. Two new services will run tri weekly on a 39 4 hour schedule with extra fare and daily on an 8 hour eastbound and 4 1 2 hour westbound schedule without extra fare. The Diesel electric powered trains, 29 1 2 hours to Chicago and 1 3 4 hours to Los Angeles, will enter service early 1947 using 11 car trains with modern streamlined equipment and insulation in silver and red. The Golden State Limited will operate from June 2 1946 with improved times, and a New York to Los Angeles sleeping car service will accompany the Golden State Limited. The Californian economy train will also return on the Golden State route.

Des Moines fire crews battled a last night blaze at the J. A. Powers bakery just outside the city, causing an estimated 75000 dollars in damage. The origin of the fire remained undetermined as the chief secured permission to fight the blaze beyond city boundaries.

Two Iowans killed in crash of plane near Laurens
Elmer Sehlensig 23 manager of Laurens airport died after piloting a Taylorcraft 40 that crashed shortly after takeoff at Laurens airport. Wayne Miller 24, a passenger, was seriously injured. Both men were trapped and removed after the crash and taken to Spencer hospital. Sehlensig had returned from three years in the army air forces in November.
