Cedar Rapids youth Jack Cocker, 22, died in a Chicago road house fire Sunday. He was son of Harry and Mrs. Cocker, born in Cedar Rapids and a Northwestern University student. The blaze trapped several patrons. Five others perished.
Waverly issued $54,000 sewage disposal plant bonds bought Friday by three local banks on joint bids at 2 percent interest with a $140 premium.
Iowa state highway commission will award a contract Tuesday for black top resurfacing of seven and one half miles on primary 96 from Engle corner five miles west of Traer to Gladbrook.
Norma Maynard Gilley five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Floyd Gilley is recovering from injuries after she fell from the door of an automobile at about forty miles per hour.
Mrs. Joseph Cook of Plattsmouth Neb in Glenwood jail pleads with brother Clarence Price to confess to the Wednesday night club attack on his grand nieces Edith Kuhl 13 who died and Helen 17 who may recover.
James Clenden purchased 40 hogs at John Holmes sale on Oct 19 for 124 dollars and later sold them for 875.82 dollars. The profit totals 733.82 dollars for five months of feed and care. Hogs averaged 90 pounds at purchase and 246 pounds at sale.
Census figures from the middlewest indicate rising farm counts. Grundy county Iowa reports 1,834 farms at the start of this year, up from 1,786 in 1930, an increase of 48 farms.

Defense counsel for John Paul Chase pictured entering court in Chicago for his trial connected to the slaying of federal agent Samuel Cowley. They may call Mrs. Lester Gillis widow of Baby Face Nelson to testify. Cowley and Nelson died in a gun battle last November. Chase is accused of involvement.
British and German negotiators opened talks in Berlin to defuse the grave arms crisis. Adolf Hitler met with foreign minister von Neurath and disarmament expert Ribbentrop beside Sir John Simon as optimism grew for a basis to broaden negotiations including France and Italy.
Police say a Morton Grove nightclub fire that killed six people and injured many more is believed to be arson. Investigators noted the blaze started yesterday night at the club and authorities questioned possible suspects as the search for a motive continued.
Thirteen Washington soloists and ten groups will enter the Sigourney district music contest April 11 12 and 13 representing Washington. Five instrumental soloists won superior ratings Saturday afternoon and join four other superior winners plus four new entrants for Sigourney competition with orchestral bands and small groups. The Wellman district notes list soloists instrumental small groups and vocal groups with teachers and accompanists named for the contested events.
L. W. Lynch, income tax field auditor, is in town for two days at the G. A. R. hall to assist residents in filing returns ahead of March 31. He notes the deadline and thanks local newspapers, bankers, and business people for cooperation, with a note that after today he will move to Iowa City for Friday and Saturday at 601 Johnson County Bank Building.

William Hatinger a 35 year old World War II veteran was found dead in his Pleasant Plain home. Jefferson county coroner from Fairfield ruled death as by own action using a 22 rifle. He was son of Mr and Mrs John Katinger leaving five siblings. Funeral arrangements are by Hoskins Funeral Home with burial at Clay Cemetery.
Rogs Levert in charge of funds for the closed Security Savings Bank announced a first 20 percent dividend payment will be made on Wednesday March 27. The bank had previously remained idle for two years due to closure.

The House silver bloc vows to fight any conference move, while administration leaders press to send the measure to conference with the Senate. Representative Lemke plans a drive to force action on the Frazier Lemke farm mortgage bill via currency expansion.
