The Supreme Court ruled six to three that Virginia may not require a poll tax for non federal elections. Justice Douglas led the majority saying wealth must not determine the franchise and voting rights are fundamental. Dissenters Black and Harlan argued the issue lies with Congress and longstanding property-based qualifications. The Fairfax County group and Norfolk’s Evelyn Butts filed the suits.

Dallas widow Lorene Hawks aged 65 died today after being shocked back to life 152 times since last weekend. Doctors used a battery of machines called The Monster and later direct heart massage when the device failed. Dr Brashier of Dallas Osteopathic Hospital described the case as fantastic and unprecedented.

Odyssean husband braves blizzard to summon help
Ed Anderson, in his 70s, and his 75 year old wife live on a Chatfield farm. During a February blizzard a stair fall left her injured. With phones dead and neighbors unreachable they trudged a mile to help, then seven miles to find a working phone. A Rochester ambulance finally reached St Marys Hospital where she recovers. The couple marks their 50th anniversary next week.

Spencer Iowa power outage ends after 47 hours
Spencer Iowa regained electrical power at 8 50 a m after 47 hours without service caused by a spring snow storm. The outage halted many businesses and cut heat in homes as furnace blowers failed. Water pressure fell to critical levels as pumps and wells lost power. Officials asked residents to conserve electricity and warned against overloading circuits. Gasoline stations and other electricity dependent businesses closed during the outage. A resident said it felt like going back to the middle ages.
