Iowa Storm Destroys Roads and Claims Several Lives

Northern Iowa digs out after a crippling snowstorm that killed at least four, closed schools and businesses, cut power to Spencer and Algona, and stranded motorists across a wide area. Winds up to 60 mph toppled trees and snapped lines as eight to ten foot drifts trapped travelers and halted travel from Mason City to Sioux City.

Supreme Court strikes down Virginia poll tax on voting

The Supreme Court ruled six to three that Virginia may not require a poll tax for non federal elections. Justice Douglas led the majority saying wealth must not determine the franchise and voting rights are fundamental. Dissenters Black and Harlan argued the issue lies with Congress and longstanding property-based qualifications. The Fairfax County group and Norfolk’s Evelyn Butts filed the suits.

Shocked to life 152 times dies after final collapse

Dallas widow Lorene Hawks aged 65 died today after being shocked back to life 152 times since last weekend. Doctors used a battery of machines called The Monster and later direct heart massage when the device failed. Dr Brashier of Dallas Osteopathic Hospital described the case as fantastic and unprecedented.

Odyssean husband braves blizzard to summon help

Ed Anderson, in his 70s, and his 75 year old wife live on a Chatfield farm. During a February blizzard a stair fall left her injured. With phones dead and neighbors unreachable they trudged a mile to help, then seven miles to find a working phone. A Rochester ambulance finally reached St Marys Hospital where she recovers. The couple marks their 50th anniversary next week.

Washington County Audit Filed For Public View

The 1964 Washington County annual audit is complete and filed for public inspection in the county auditor’s and state auditor’s offices. Worthington urges more idle funds be invested, notes past difficulty in short term investments, and suggests mental fund levy adjustments to balance receipts and expenses at the county home. Hughes cites study favoring studded tires safety

Des Moines Iowa Gov Harold E Hughes backs metal studded snow tires citing tests showing safety value outweighs highway damage. He declined to discuss a Polk County ruling that studs are legal statewide and noted the attorney general appealed. Hughes says states should legislate auto safety and will propose necessary rules to the 1967 General Assembly.

Spencer Iowa power outage ends after 47 hours

Spencer Iowa regained electrical power at 8 50 a m after 47 hours without service caused by a spring snow storm. The outage halted many businesses and cut heat in homes as furnace blowers failed. Water pressure fell to critical levels as pumps and wells lost power. Officials asked residents to conserve electricity and warned against overloading circuits. Gasoline stations and other electricity dependent businesses closed during the outage. A resident said it felt like going back to the middle ages.

Storm Death Toll Rises Across Upper Midwest

The death toll from the second great blizzard in three weeks surpassed 30 today across Minnesota Michigan Iowa Nebraska Wisconsin and Kansas as below zero temperatures hampered efforts to dig out from heavy snow drifts.
