Earl Dickey washed his car with gasoline in his Davenport garage and started the engine. A gasoline flare ignited a fire that destroyed the auto and garage before firefighters could extinguish it.
In Des Moines the senate kept two chain store tax bills pending until March 27 while a special committee drafts a substitute. One bill taxes stores per unit and another by annual business volume. Iowa income tax payments for 1938 show a 14 percent drop versus 1937.
Des Moines school superintendent A. W. Merrill told Des Moines area teachers they should not vote to join the state retirement program now under consideration in the legislature. He said local systems in Des Moines Sioux City Cedar Rapids and Davenport offer better benefits than those in the senate passed bill.
Fire at Chandler Pump Co. warehouse No. 1 caused an estimated $40,000 damage. Firemen laid six lines of hose and fought the blaze for about two hours before controlling it. Origin unknown, the fire started in the center and spread toward the roof.
Fifteen Iowa mayors through the Town League of Municipalities urged Governor Wilson to back a beer bill. The measure, approved by the Senate after House passage, tightens the state beer law by reducing permits, partially separating beer and dancing, and penalties for possession of federal retail liquor tax stamps.
Several hundred leaders from southern and eastern Iowa will converge on Washington April 26 to 28 for a major Sunday school convention. About 1,000 out of town visitors are expected, with lodging for around 400 in local homes. Meetings will also be held at Spencer and Atlantic, each drawing about 1,000 attendees. Columbia March 24 UP Six men were executed in the electric chair within 15 minutes for the murder of J Olin Sanders the guard captain during a December 1937 prison break. The six, J B Bair Clayton Crans William H Gentry Herbert Moorman Roy Suttles and George Wingard, were led to the chair in the order they entered Sanders office. Wingard was first. Gentry claimed his companions were innocent and said he stabbed Sanders with shears.
Sometime last night the Fred L. Stewart hardware store on North Iowa avenue was broken into by a thief, probably an amateur. Entrance was gained through a rear window and a second-hand watch and forty cents in pennies were taken from the cash register. The Stewart store has been a popular target but this is the first report to police in several months.
No marriage licenses have been issued since March 15 and the clerk of court records remain blank for over a week. Officials note a lull in marriages with many couples possibly awaiting June.
Present were officers directors and members of families from Washington and Louisa counties totaling five hundred? at a Y M C A event. W P McDowell of Iowa Soap Burlington gave an address urging cooperation to boost national business and economic conditions. He noted visiting 28 states in the past year and shared views on regional prosperity and cooperation. A brief business session followed.
The senate appropriations committee reported a 613 million war department appropriation to fund an immediate expansion of the army air corps to 6000 fighting planes, adding 13.3 million to the house approved bill. It also disclosed tentative sites in the Mississippi Valley for hazardous loading plants for high explosives.
Relatives report the death of Pearl Beatty formerly Pearl Hitchcock in Oskaloosa after a long illness. She was married to a brother of 8. P. Beatty of Brighton and C. BE. Beatty of Washington. She leaves a husband and several children. funeral details were not announced.
Washington County Council of Religious Education sponsors a district Sunday school rally at Kalona Baptist Church next Sunday at 2 PM. Speakers include Mrs Vernon Wittris Rev Vernon Carter and Rev Arthur Atack of Washington. A similar meeting was held last Sunday at Richer church near Noble for the southern part of the county.
DES MOINES The Iowa House approved a bill to add a 10 percent special sales tax on liquor bought in 170 state owned liquor stores. The measure passed 82 to 20 and would funnel revenue into the sales income tax fund supporting old age pensions emergency relief and homestead tax relief.
Cody Wyoming March 24 The sheriff Frank Blackburn with 14 experienced men and bloodhounds began the chase for Wart Durand, killer of four men since escaping jail. He reported locating Durand high on an eastern Beartooth mountain shoulder with nearly 400 troops available but using only a small riflemen detail.
Max Gieorge has purchased the residence at 502 South Marion Avenue from the late Mrs. Elizabeth Young and is converting it into a four unit apartment house. Work started two weeks ago with expected occupancy by mid April. Front porch removal and west entry planned. exterior repaired and painted. interior plastering and redecorating. each unit to include three rooms plus bath. A new warm air furnace with air conditioning added. all plumbing fixtures and appliances will be new. Mr George, longtime local resident on Wheat Jefferson Street, follows in the footsteps of his parents the late Mr and Mrs Patterson George once residents of Ames and Des Moines and former Washington residents.
DES MOINES employment data show a large rise with weekly benefit payments for the week ending March 18 totaling 186827 dollars. The commission notes a slight week-to-week drop of over 13000 dollars, while year-to-date payments approach around 200000 dollars weekly.

Judge Frank Bechly dismissed the Rabewold versus Morrison case after plaintiff failed to appear for a ten o'clock hearing. The court overruled a venue-change motion and sustained a defense motion to strike parts of the substituted petition, ruling it failed to state a cause of action and ordering the plaintiff to pay costs. Attorneys Livingston Baldrige represented the defendants.
