Bonds to finance a local power plant were sold to Carleton D. Beh Co of Des Moines at 4 percent interest. A premium of 95 was paid on the 34060 issue. Average maturity is three years. Work is set for completion in August.
Hampton C A Chase 26 of Mason City blames a state patrol car for a crash six miles west of here. His vehicle and the patrol car carrying officers Robert Reese and Edgar Baker collided after his car rolled over twice. Chase was aided by the officers and charged with reckless driving.
Darlene Kelly, 28, held since Feb 6 on four worthless checks, pleads guilty and fined 3800. She must pay by Thursday or face three months in prison. Her accomplice Meridith Sellards is sentenced to six months in jail.
Des Moines Miss Agnes Samuelson state superintendent of schools urged all Iowa communities to inspect their school plants at once to ensure safety. Her remark followed the New London tragedy and she said it has torn the hearts of all. She sent a message on behalf of Iowa schools to the Texas state superintendent.
A group of about 30 Waterloo stores including major outlets reduced working hours and established a $13 per week minimum wage for employees excluding apprentices. Starting March 29, weekday hours run 9 PM to 5:30 PM and 9 AM to 5 PM in July and August. Saturday hours are 9 AM to 6 PM. Stores had previously stayed open Saturday nights until 9.
In Iowa City 300 University of Iowa hospital workers signed a petition to the state legislature demanding a decent living wage. Separately 107 registered nurses submitted a request that their 15 percent cut from 1931-82 be restored, arguing the current wage scale hampers living standards and family raising.
Quaise Ward of Ames Iowa State College climbed to his girlfriend Frances Baird’s porch to talk during her scarlet fever quarantine. He visited daily during spring vacation, keeping their romance alive despite illness.
Chamberlain Corp a subsidiary of American Wringer Co plans a 1500 foot long addition to the Woonsocket Rhode Island plant to store rubber. Approval to vacate a nearby alley is under consideration as part of the project. The company recently finished a two story plant and office building.
In Council Bluffs two year old Richard Henderson swallowed an open safety pin that had fastened his sleeper. After a fruitless search for the pin the child told his mother it was in his tummy and X rays confirmed the pin was located inside.
Europe faces rising Italy Britain tensions as fighting in Spain continues on Guadalajara front. Loyalists claim advances while rebels report retreats and heavy losses. Mussolini may send more divisions if Spain defeat stands. British cabinet says no Italian volunteers since ban. Rebel and loyalist forces clash north and south of Madrid and on Guadalajara front.
An auction sale of articles discarded for church remodeling at St Pauls Evangelial Church is announced for Thursday. Rev Carl W Klein says hours are eleven to two with a hot lunch at noon. Frank Macon will be the auctioneer and items include light fixtures used lumber and a rosewood piano case. Businesses are invited and all welcome to preview the remodeling work.
John E. Agert a 64 year old transient from Milwaukee attempted to hop a Rock Island freight train heading north near the canning factory two blocks south of the depot. He was struck and severely injured taken to Washington county hospital where an arm was amputated. No other serious injuries reported.
The Dexter washing machine company of Fairfield denies reports in the Iowa history story and 30 Iowa papers that the Dexter plant was sold to Kelvinator. The denial counters a week old story claiming the sale had occurred.
In a hurried effort to operate, the pin failed to stay in place as nausea from anesthesia forced it to emerge. The ensuing disruption halted the procedure and prompted immediate reevaluation of the setup.
Washington Supt E A Ralston touts an Iowa State College band from Ames visiting the high school Thursday evening The admission fee is reduced to five cents to attract a large crowd The 260 member Ames band is among the finest in the country and the traveling group features 70 selected musicians in bright cardinal and gold uniforms The program offers a varied set of numbers and starts at 8 15 PM with risk of overlap with the Holy Week union service at the United Presbyterian church
Funds pour into the Cancer control drive led by the Women’s Field Army of the American Society for the Control of Cancer. Washington women host drives this week at the Washington State Bank and other locations to solicit memberships and donations with buttons and slickers as rewards.
Princeton President Harold W. Dodds condemned Franklin D. Roosevelt’s judicial plan as an attempt to pack the Supreme Court. He warned that emergency psychology could erode American self government and compared the tactic to Nazi methods amid global democratic pressures. He testified before the Senate judiciary committee urging defense of democracy.
City officers have fined several youths for traffic violations including speeding and running stop signs as part of a push to improve safety. City Marshal Blaine Hlolues announced that large stop signs on special posts will be erected at arterial intersections within days to curb violations.
Des Moines March 24 The Iowa House defeated two amendments by Rep Robert Blue to correct tax collection injustices as it permanent re enactment of the two percent sales tax was assured The amendments sought theaters to remit all collected tax and retailers to pay beyond the two percent on gross sales One amendment aimed at low value sales near 15 cents was defeated 54 to 52 with Stewart of Washington voting with Blue

Dr William H Phelps preached the third Holy Week sermon at United Presbyterian Church Des Moines discussing the unanswerable argument of life rather than repartee He urged a life of peace balance and poise as essential for faith and spiritual power with prayer and music noted and services at 7 30 pm The Call of Christ to Modern Youth is set for this evening and The Light That Failed for Thursday evening contributions will be taken later in the week
The Journal reports a cooking school opening at the State Theater with Charlotte Larson presenting new ideas in kitchen and home making. Floral displays, Cambridge glassware, moonlight blue pieces, and an array of equipment from local merchants adorned the event as tables were set for dining and demonstrations.
Washington churches plan diverse Easter music including cantatas choruses and solos. The Methodist church will perform the evening cantata while other churches feature a mix of anthems hymns and musical dramas. Merrill Ostrus of Maryville is expected to sing at the 10 am Sunday school portion.
The program lists organ preludes and offertories for Resurrection Sunday from the First United Presbyterian Church. Soloists include Mable Livingston and Marion George performing hymns and anthems such as Behold I Show You a Mystery and Never Again to Weep.
A large bus en route to Cincinnati blew a front tire and crashed into a bridge abutment near Salem Illinois. Seventeen people died and five were seriously injured. The crash sparked a blaze and possible explosion. Ambulances doctors and nurses rushed to the scene as authorities identified victims.
Montgomery Ward and McLellan company stores will start earlier hours. Opening at 8 a.m. for men and 8:30 a.m. for women. Closing times stay at 6:30 p.m. daily and 10 p.m. Saturdays.
Walter P. Chrysler and John L. Lewis held a morning conference with Michigan Governor Frank Murphy in Lansing to resolve the Chrysler strike ongoing since March 8. The leaders arrived without comment as representative Rabau said Detroit’s strike had been settled, with a formal announcement due later.
The official weather observer reports .60 inch of precipitation last night and this morning. Rain began early yesterday evening and continued at intervals through the night. Today remains cloudy with little further rain as temperatures fall from the north.
A large blaze in Alma Colorado destroyed the business district and about six residences of the historic mining town. Officials believe the fire began from an overheated stove and crews worked to contain the flames.
