Soviet 2nd Ukrainian army pushes across Bessarabia with rapid river crossings, driving German and Romanian units back north of the Prut. Nadushita near Balti falls to Soviet control as units reach within 20 miles of the Prut while other groups drive toward Nikolaev and Voznesensk on the Black Sea front.
Early today the county sent its largest batch to Camp Dodge for pre induction exams. About 36 men per bus, nine tenths were fathers, many from Washington with business and professional ties. Those who pass may wait at least three weeks before active service.
Wapello County Supervisor Chairman Charles Horan asked for the resignation of county home steward Charles Strader after an investigation found whisky was forced on a 23 year old woman patient for medicinal use. County Attorney John D. Moon and the board reviewed the incident and the physician said he had not prescribed the liquor.
The Humboldt County case ends its third day with Dora Machovec, 16, facing first degree murder charges in the slaying of stepfather Paul Voss, 41, near Menwick. State Agent T. A. Thompson and Coroner Dr. Cloyce A. Newman testified as prosecutors edge toward a jury verdict.
Cedar Rapids reports that George Scheerer, 28, is charged with manslaughter after Carl Olney, 65, died from injuries after being struck by Scheerer’s car. Olney had been injured Saturday night and died Wednesday.
Two state witnesses testified that George R. Mathews, 82, of Osceola, Iowa, was intoxicated January 21 when he caused a vehicle accident near Mitchellville. Mathews faces a third offense driving while intoxicated charge before an all female jury in District Judge Tom Murrow's court. conviction could bring up to three years in prison.
Lieut. Roger Dak of Sibley formerly of Sioux City neared home and was startled when feminine apparel cascaded from his suitcase in Omaha en route to Camp Crowder Missouri. He had picked up a wrong grip in changing stations and arrived here later.

British Indian forces bolstered strong defenses around Imphal while U S Marines tighten positions in the St Martins Islands north of New Ireland. In Bougainville, American divisions kill 48 Japanese in a bayonet clash on an enemy outpost.
Washington pastors announce a Holy Week schedule with union services from Palm Sunday April 2 to Easter April 3 in multiple churches. Palm Sunday at the Methodist church features a choir program. Easter evening at United Presbyterian includes Rev George Kerr. Other services run through the week with speakers from Baptist, Christian Tabernacle, St Pauls, Presbyterian, Nazarene, and Church of Christ. Good Friday noon to three oclock features seven ministers delivering the seven last words of Christ.
The fur collection for merchant seamen will continue for the duration. I Rothschild, executive director of the War Emergency Board of the Fur Industry, announced the ongoing drive to gather used fur garments for the national fur West project supporting seamen.
Funeral services for Mae Snider will be held at 1 pm Saturday at the Christian Church in Kalona with Rev. Ada Hillis officiating. Burial will be in Keota cemetery. Surviving are two brothers Key and M R Snider of Washington and a sister Mrs Louie Smith of Muscatine. The family home was northwest of Washington and she lived with her brother near Kalona before death.
Nomination petitions circulate for six Washington county farmers including W W Schmitter Carl T Anderson Jiloward Anderson Herbert Campbell Joe Knotex and W L Gates. A hearing is set for Saturday at 1 30 PM at the Y M C A where farmers may testify before the state soil conservation committee on establishing a county soil district.
London report says German fighters engaged 1,500 American force bombers targeting Brunswick rail yards and vital facilities while Liberators Fortresses and RAF bombers struck Frankfurt after a large night raid. Daylight attack saw German resistance for the first time in several cities, including Brunswick, yet the precision bombardment proceeded with strong Allied effort.
Allied forces pressed the fight in Cassino Naples with hand to hand combat in ruined streets. New Zealand infantry battled German units in a narrow southern pocket while German counter-attacks from surrounding hills sought relief. NZ troops cleared rubble near the Continental hotel and used mines to deter snipers.
London reports Marek Lorts said Hitler summoned Romania’s premier and vice premier for talks as German forces press to secure southeastern Europe. A puppet Hungarian cabinet vowed total mobilization for a joint war effort with Germany. Bulgarian rail and communications were reportedly seized with Soviet diplomats detained in Sofia.

Aimed at inductees and their families, the event will cover national service life insurance dependency allotments and home preparation with talks by an army and a navy representative from Camp Dodge and Des Moines recruiting stations.
