County's Largest Selective Service Group Heads to Induction

Early today the county sent its largest batch to Camp Dodge for pre induction exams. About 36 men per bus, nine tenths were fathers, many from Washington with business and professional ties. Those who pass may wait at least three weeks before active service.

Resignation Sought After Alleged Patient Maltreatment

Wapello County Supervisor Chairman Charles Horan asked for the resignation of county home steward Charles Strader after an investigation found whisky was forced on a 23 year old woman patient for medicinal use. County Attorney John D. Moon and the board reviewed the incident and the physician said he had not prescribed the liquor.

Manslaughter Charge In Death Of Milwaukee Rail Road Flagman

Cedar Rapids reports that George Scheerer, 28, is charged with manslaughter after Carl Olney, 65, died from injuries after being struck by Scheerer’s car. Olney had been injured Saturday night and died Wednesday.

Tried for third time as intoxicated driver

Two state witnesses testified that George R. Mathews, 82, of Osceola, Iowa, was intoxicated January 21 when he caused a vehicle accident near Mitchellville. Mathews faces a third offense driving while intoxicated charge before an all female jury in District Judge Tom Murrow's court. conviction could bring up to three years in prison.

Newton Family Burn to Death in Westwood Suburb

In Newton Iowa the Pitts family perished in a two room house fire as Mrs Carl Pitts 23 and her children Marilyn Kay 6 and Robert Dean 5 months died in bed. Coroner Toland said they suffocated before the flames overtook them while the husband worked a night shift at the Maytag plant.

Ministers Plan For Holy Week Observances

Washington pastors announce a Holy Week schedule with union services from Palm Sunday April 2 to Easter April 3 in multiple churches. Palm Sunday at the Methodist church features a choir program. Mae Snider Dies at Home Near Kalona

Funeral services for Mae Snider will be held at 1 pm Saturday at the Christian Church in Kalona with Rev. Ada Hillis officiating. Burial will be in Keota cemetery. Surviving are two brothers Key and M R Snider of Washington and a sister Mrs Louie Smith of Muscatine. The family home was northwest of Washington and she lived with her brother near Kalona before death.

Plan Pre Induction Program April 5 For Men About to Enter Services
