Mrs Rose McClelland superintendent of Sunnyslope tuberculosis sanatorium proposes tuberculin tests for at least one class at Ottumwa high school. The Ottumwa board of education has not yet decided.
University of Iowa dramatics presents two drawing room productions as part of the experimental program. The plays are staged in a center room setting with the audience surrounding actors. About 85 spectators can be accommodated per performance. Stage Door is set for March 8 and 29 while Penny Wise runs March 30 and 21.
Des Moines area police and federal agents expand the hunt for Clarence Stevens, the suspect in the 1933 Mary McElroy kidnapping in Kansas City Maine. Miss McElroy, daughter of Mayor H F McElroy, was seized in May 1933 and held 29 hours until a $30,000 ransom was paid.
The Iowa State Conservation Commission announces Reed's Lake State Park near Hampton and Lake Fire State Park developed under CCC auspices. Reed's Lake spans 267 acres with a 130 acre lake, formed around an old reservoir that supplied Beed's mill waters.
Des Moines hosts the sixth annual conference of boards of education and school administrators on March 29 with Michigan superintendent Dr Eugene Filliot speaking on Creating Better Conditions for our School Children. Miss Aepess Samuelson announced the event. Representatives of the public, parents, boards of education and teachers will discuss what our schools need most.
Seven years after Jim Irwin dropped his glasses into a well while repairing a pump, plumber Ray Johnson recovered them during cleaning. The glasses showed only slight frame discoloration and corrosion, and were returned to Irwin.
Des Moines police reports show 29 arrests for violations of game and fish laws in February. Twenty five were convicted with jail terms totaling 906 days and fines amounting to 55 dollars. Violations split into 16 fishing law convictions and 9 hunting law convictions, with one arrest for illegal trapping.
Taylor county board of supervisors may erialize plans to restore Bedford Old Fort Parker near the refuge site once used during Indian raids and Civil War anti union meetings. Supporters want the surrounding tract set aside as a county park while those who used the stockade can oversee construction. The rough hewn walls of the old log house still stand.
The University of Iowa will close for spring vacation for five and one half days ending at noon April 13 and resume April 19 at 9 a m. Four weeks remain before the exam period closes the second semester.
President Roosevelt denounced opponents of hour and wage proposals as supporting fascist ideals and warned that national progress is blocked by selfishness. Speaking in Gainesville he praised local aid after the 1936 tornado as thousands cheered Governor Rivers declaring Georgia backs Roosevelt fully. He criticized pre-1933 government methods as hindering recovery and noted low purchasing power in the region.
Robert Leroy Hoehle, 34, died at 3 45 this morning at 1823 North Third avenue after a long illness. He will be buried in Woodlawn cemetery. Surviving are his wife Anna Irene Beenblossom, parents in Washington, and three sons Robert Lee Wayne Roscoe and Terry Gene. Also brothers Clyde Wade Maurine Evelyn and one deceased, and sister Mrs Evelyn Hawkins.
John B. Quinn of Highland township announces his candidacy for the County Board for the term starting January 1 1939. A lifelong farmer, he argues for efficient economical management and will run in the June Democratic primaries alongside rival J A Marsh of Ainsworth.
Republican men and women in Washington county voting precincts will hold caucus gatherings this week to complete selections of committeemen and committeewomen and delegates to the county convention. Washington's first ward meets Thursday and the fourth ward Friday with Franklin township caucus Friday evening.
Sneak thieves hit multiple autos in Washington with reports of at least nine additional tampered vehicles. Radios and small items were stolen from Paul Hunt and Everette Stewart, while others including Charles Brown and Dr. Harold Johnson had cars or garages broken into. Some cars showed no loss. others had loot varying from flashlights to a coat.
Crone’s moving into a modern new room on the north side of the square with a formal opening planned for Saturday after operating temporarily on Main Street since a fire destroyed the corner building. The Thursday Journal will publish the full announcement.
W. Fred Hastings of Chicago is in town this week inspecting merchandise at the Montgomery Ward store.
Pope Pius XII appealed to General Francisco Franco to curb the horrors of war in Spain. The Vatican move followed joint British and French efforts to halt bombing of undefended towns as tensions rose over the civil conflict.
Miss Helen Creswell, county welfare director, reports Washington county has twelve openings for youths to enroll in CCC camps for six months. Enrollees must be 17 to 23 and report by early April. Assignment camp and exact start date to be announced.
President Lester B. Krabill urged all residents to attend a public safety meeting at eight o'clock Thursday night in the high school auditorium. Omaha police veteran Patrick Payne will speak on highway safety. An executive nominating committee led by Jay Brown, Mrs. George Fudiger, and Harland Mead will prepare officers for next year.
Rescue teams fought through swamps at Renton Harbor to reach the bodies of two men and a woman. The search continued as authorities pursued causes and identified the victims.
Washington dispatches report an Interstate Commerce Commission examiner recommended Rock Island abandon two line sections from Muscatine to Iowa Junction. One segment Muscatine to Nichols covers 14.5 miles. Lone Tree to Iowa Junction covers 5.25 miles. Remaining track to Lone Tree would serve Lone Tree via Nichols and Burlington Cedar Rapids corridor. The Iowa City connection remains active.
J. A. Marsh of Ainsworth a longtime businessman and civic figure announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for member of the county board of supervisors term starting January 1939. He served four years on the county old age assistance commission, a board that operated without pay until it was dissolved.
A cabin monoplane crashed and burned shortly after takeoff on a flight to South Bend Indiana, killing the occupant. Authorities investigated the cause and secured the crash site. Further details were not immediately available.
A dinner and brotherhood meeting are planned at the Christian church as part of a national brotherhood night. Dr Floyd Bush will deliver a radio address from 8 o clock on KMA, with other addresses nationwide. A potluck dinner at 6 30 p m will precede talks by C A Nicholson Mrs Georgia Larson and Rev Vernon Carter.

Louis Kolosick 35, died suddenly yesterday evening while working in his uncle John Lasek's barn in Highland township 16 miles northeast of Washington. Born Sept 2 1902 at Ainsworth he was married to Lucile Becker and survived by his wife father J A Kolosick three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 PM at L A Jones Funeral Home conducted by Rev W J Stevens.
Secretary Morgenthau announced that savings bonds sold through March 7 1938 total maturity value 1 584 462 875. More than 1 260 000 investors participated with an average daily sale of 1 720 375 since 1925. A one day record of 10 029 775 maturity value was set on January 10 1938.
President Roosevelt sent a message to Congress ordering the dismissal of TVA chairman Arthur E. Morgan and signaling an inevitable congressional inquiry into the Tennessee Valley Authority. Acting Attorney General Robert H. Jackson supported executive removal citing precedents and contumacious conduct.
The Washington County Safety Council schedules a public meeting Thursday at 8 pm in the high school auditorium. Patrick Payne will deliver an address on safety for inter urban transit lines and promoting safe driving and walking.
Judge Siegerg haus will start jury trials in district court next Monday afternoon with ten trials set over the next two weeks in the order reached.
