Jefferson column reports Howard Higgins a young farmer near Churdan suffered a left arm amputation above the wrist after an accident with a corn sheller. Shenandoah to host a youth bone disease clinic soon led by Dr. Arthur Steindler of Iowa City.
OTTUMWA representatives of four railroad brotherhoods and a Chamber of Commerce committee plan a meeting to defend against the chamber’s resolution condemning a 70 car freight train limit. The discussion centers on rail freight restrictions.
A blaze on the Herb Mumby farm destroyed a crib holding 4,000 bushels of corn and several other buildings. No injuries were reported, and the cause is under investigation by local authorities.
The seven Amana villages retain their antique charm while adding modern conveniences. Remodeling has brightened plain facades, and public schooling remains. Middle Amana High School serves 69 pupils as a focal point of the community.
More than 600 youths from Towa and surrounding states will attend annual Citizens Military Training camps at Fort Des Moines Iowa and Fort Crook Omaha Nebraska from July 14 to August 17. All expenses are paid and any person aged 17 to 24 is eligible. A physical examination and endorsement by two local citizens are required.
Calhoun county supervisors say they will start buying right of way for a new paved Highway 26 segment between Rockwell City and Lytton. The eight mile western stretch will run west of Rockwell City then diagonally to Lytton, a diagonal portion that has sparked dispute among land owners, the board and the state highway commission.
Tony Voss aged 38 was shot with two bullets near the heart then drove about two miles before flagging a truck. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Sheldon by truck driver Fred Fricke and was in fair condition Monday night. Sheriff Leem Kuil said Voss had been in ill health.
A blowtorch used to strip paint at the Roscoe Alcorn residence in Oskaloosa ignited more than paint. The fire reached a partition and scorched a wall. Damage described as slight.
L V Johnson of Tipton opened a new produce house near Jurging's Tin Shop on North Iowa Ave. He has five years in produce business. His wife and two daughters Mary Hilen and Wanda Lou already moved to Washington, living at 902 East Main St. Mr Johnson is a Moose Lodge member and Mrs Johnson belongs to Women of the Moose.

Hong Kong incident leaves civilian dead. bridges to international settlement closed. The Panay bombing prompts a U S note to Japan seeking indemnification for four deaths and property losses.
George Robert Richmond pleaded guilty in district court to stealing an automobile belonging to Charles Jackson. Richmond, arrested with the car in Peru, Ind., was sentenced to not more than ten years in the Fort Madison state penitentiary. The case preceded grand jury impaneling and probate hearings.
Paris reports Vienna faces a massive Jewish exodus as Reichsfuhrer Hitler drives anti Semitic persecution. An estimated 800000 non Aryan fled or hid in the city though only about 200000 Jews are registered, due to Nuremberg laws affecting those with Jewish blood. Continued on page 2.
Income tax collections for the first 21 days of March rise 6.1 percent from the previous year. Total receipts reach $685,698,562 versus $652,307,522 a year earlier. Iowa shows $3,542,315 this year compared with $3,478,533 last year.
Four American oil companies with Mexican properties asked the U S State Department to protest the Mexican government's seizure of British and American oil properties valued at 400 million dollars.
At last night's meeting the Washington city council approved the annual appropriation ordinance for the new municipal year starting April 1. No major changes were reported in department budgets such as police, fire, garbage, streets, parks, library, and lighting. The session also authorized a $1,500 contract with the Washington Municipal Band for 24 summer concerts and directed bids for garbage disposal. Discussions continued on widening Elm Grove Cemetery Road with possible right of way negotiations and paving plans through city county cooperation.
Chariton report says former State representative James L. Randall died last night of a heart attack at age sixty. He served in the state House and was active in local affairs. A memorial service details were not announced.

In Washington early today burglars targeted vehicles and a garage. A Philco radio vanished from Paul Hunt’s car after a 3:10 a.m. sighting, and Everett Stewart reported a garage break with a Musicair radio a small motor and a tractor radiator core stolen. A passing truck with Van Buren county plates was tied to the case.
Weather over past days greatly improved the dirt roads in Washington county. Sunshine on Saturday through Monday and yesterday's wind dried out mud and deep ruts, though some surfaces hard clods remain. A dash of rain this morning should soften them for quicker road repairs by the county maintenance gangs. The Supervisors expect to keep machines and crews in steady use to restore the highways.
In Washington on March 22 the House voted to override President Roosevelt and approve a Senate amendment increasing rural electrification funds from 30 million to 49.9 million dollars. The action steps up federal backing for power lines and rural service expansion nationwide.
The Washington school district schedules an April 19 election to approve bonds of 96000 for a new north town elementary school. The board, citing a damaged present building, seeks broader voter turnout after the prior February 28 proposal failed to reach the 60 percent requirement. G. Mace reelected president. T. J. Pease and C. W. Tucker reelected. E. K. Ralston reappointed superintendent.
The county auditor warns collectors must bring both starlings heads and feet to claim the bounty. Hunters have submitted only heads or feet, or mismatched parts. A Dutch Creek man delivered 356 pairs of feet and later 333 heads, missing 17 to pair with the feet. The bounty is ten cents per head and foot combined.
