The annual state DeMolay conclave will be held in Dubuque June 19 to 21 with Allen chapter of Dubuque as host. Lewis Harlan of Marion is master councilor.
Albert T. Redding, a former employee, files an $8000 damage action against Chris Tensen named as the defendant. He alleges two fingers on his left hand were mangled when a plank was jerked during wood sawing on the Christensen farm.
Mrs. J. S. Wells confronted an unknown man in her home who was attempting to assault her 11 year old daughter. She used a stove poker to strike him, driving him from the house as she called for help. The assailant fled through the front door and escaped.
Miss Barbara Harris testified in a $40,000 damage suit that Regina Smith suffered burns while Harris worked at Clear View sanitarium. The suit, filed by Regina Smith’s guardian and mother Anna Smith of Marshalltown, names the sanitarium and four officials as defendants.
In Sioux City probate court a joint will filed by David C. Lindberg and Philip B. Lindberg for Reuben L. Lindberg 46 directs that the 300 acre Woodbury County farm be inherited by the surviving brothers after his death from heart disease last Thursday.
Executors of F. L. Maytag estate sold 400 acres west of Laurel to Dan C. Maytag and EB Maytag, father and son. The land includes the old Daniel Maytag farm once home to F. L. Maytag. Dan C. Maytag bought 240 acres for 21300 and EB Maytag 160 acres for 14200.
Public Safety Commissioner Harold N. Sturgeon announced a crackdown on parking violations in Sioux City as meters were reduced from 700 to 500. A county survey showed low compliance among Woodbury and visiting motorists, revealing few paid spaces.
A second speech clinic conducted by Mrs. C E B Obermann of Iowa City and staff will be held in the high school Saturday all day. There is room for a few more children with speech defects and interested parents should call the Washington county health unit to obtain pre registration blanks.
Cars driven by T. G. Lee and Jacob Fisher collided this morning near Dick's Furniture Store on South Iowa Avenue causing slight damage to both vehicles. Lee traveled northbound while Fisher was pulling away from the curb. fenders and wheels locked, and the cars were separated after some time.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce began its 1939 centennial celebration drive and formed the centennial commission with Fred Downing as chairman. A historical pageant contract for $1,750 was signed, and plans include free acts and concessions downtown during the August celebration.
The House Rules Committee reported favorably by 7 to 4 a resolution by Representative Eugene Cox of Georgia authorizing the House Appropriations Committee to investigate the WPA. Cox said the resolution would be called up next week and would unquestionably be approved by the House.
Des Moines March 22 Opposition to Senate action on public safety and farm to market road bills heated in the house and could kill both measures The house voted 89 190 percent to insist on its amendment to place the public safety department under the attorney general rather than under an appointed commissioner.
The dividend dough free auction moves up to 1 30 PM this Saturday at Washingtons Central Park. About 150 merchandise items valued over 125 dollars will be sold in the first sale with more promised. Auctioneer Frank Macon handles the opening cry with future sales to feature different auctioneers. Only dividend dough from Washington Chamber of Commerce firms can be used. The bogus money costs customers nothing but buys goods. real money cannot be used. The event offers entertainment and a public speech setup with full address equipment onsite.
The Senate rejected the Wheeler amendment to the government reorganization bill by a 46 to 44 vote after administration pressure shifted two Democratic votes. Chavez of New Mexico opposed the amendment while Miller of Arkansas abstained. The measure would have required Congress approval for each federal agency reshuffle before taking effect.
Judge Frank Beehly of Montezuma plans a Friday evening dinner at the Y M C A in Washington with the Washing ton county lawyers. The birthday celebrant was March 13 but he was in Minnesota for the birth of a grandson, as he does annually when holding court away from home.

The junior high presented "A Folk Festival" in song and dance last evening in the high school auditorium. Sixth graders performed music from the British Isles and other nations with students in characteristic costumes. The program featured Ireland Scotland and England with songs such as The Irish Washerwoman.
Announcement of a Washington county meeting for farmers at the court house Friday evening March 24 at 7 30. It backs a cost of production bill introduced in Congress by Ed Fischer and Smith Brookhart. Speakers include Page L Hawthorne of the Iowa Farmers Union and Donald W Van Vliet, union brokerage manager.
Jape Beranek indicted for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated pleaded guilty as a jury was to be drawn. Judge Frank Weekly fined $600 and suspended his license for a year. A nonpayment imprisonment was suspended until Dec 1 1939 and Beranek was paroled to Attorney L J Kehoe. Jury members for March term were excused until next Monday afternoon.
A bill introduced by a house committee would set the maximum monthly old age pension at 30 dollars, while most recipients would still receive 25 dollars unless in exceptional cases. The proposal aims to adjust the pension framework and expand support for aged residents.
Judge Beechly dismissed the embezzlement indictment against Howard N. McCleery on his own motion. The case was on the district court calendar and set for trial this week, ending the proceedings in the State v McCleery.
The state’s case against Justin North for allegedly burning his own truck to defraud an insurer ended with a directed verdict of not guilty by Judge Frank Beechly. The judge ruled the evidence failed to prove felonious intent and instructed the jury to acquit, as North seeks damages in a Muscatine County suit against Polley Holders Mutual Casualty for $722.
