The Fortnightly club's Applied Arts department sponsors an art exhibit Friday at 8 in the high school gym. Doris Yordy will present 45 minutes of slide shows and discussion on art, then attendees may view student works. Larger pieces in the art room, rest in the gym, open to the public with parents especially invited.
Iowa City witnesses describe how Robert Bednasek arranged a candlelight meeting with Margaret Jackson in a crowded rooming house. Testimony details the couple entering the room and a forceful hallway telephone call shortly after the alleged crime.
District Judge R G Yoder grants Dorothy Jean Palmer a divorce from Calvin Arthur Palmer. Custody awarded of one minor child with $20 monthly support. No alimony. Defendant receives Illinois real estate.
The Washington county Red Cross fund drive is 47.7 percent toward its $5,858 quota with $2,793.30 collected. Outlying towns Richmer $108.10 and Rubio $39 have reported, while Glenrore district led rural schools with Morris L. Meyer as chairman and $42, Prairie Flower district under Earl Smith has $938. In the county, 24 of 55 ward workers have completed rounds. Mrs. Jesse Stewart reported first with $28 on March 2.
Funeral services for Mrs. Robert V. Davis were held Saturday afternoon at the residence and at the Salem Presbyterian church with Rev. Thomas Nelson in charge. Burial followed in Cambrain cemetery. Bearers included E. V. Humphreys, Ed Humphreys, Ed Thomas, Ed Rees, Everette Davis and David White.
Washington reports the Agriculture Department will publish the spring planting intentions survey at 2 pm CST to see if farmers will follow acreage allotments and shift to other crops. With $4 billion in surpluses, Brannan expects yes to both questions though Congress weighs looser restrictions. corn remains central with $1 billion tied to price supports.
President Truman denounced reports that Chief Justice Vinson might replace Dean Acheson as secretary of state as a fabrication. He reaffirmed confidence in Acheson and indicated no plan to remove him. Officials said he hopes loyalty files won’t be needed in the Senate inquiry.
The service for Richard E Lease was held Saturday at Crawfordsville Methodist Church at 2 PM conducted by Rev. Clif ford Ott and Rev. Ernest Smith. Interment followed in Crawfordsville Cemetery with casketbearers Robert Shafer Lee Shafer Hal Huston Clint Fletcher Clarence Lowe and Harry Paschal.

A collision occurred Sunday at 8:5 p m east of the Nobel Service station in Wayland during sleet. Drivers Glen Wenger and Chris Stauffer were in the wreck. Mrs Wenger was thrown against the windshield. Passengers and drivers escaped with no injuries though the cars were badly damaged.
William Gamon was elected chairman of the Washington county extension service program development committee at a Saturday meeting in the extension office. The committee set plans for next year’s program and reviewed the current one. Members include Mr. and Mrs. Robert Buck, Mrs. W. L. McGinnis, George Horn, Howard Anderson, C. T. Johnson Jr., and J. H. Jones. A follow-up meeting is planned for Thursday, March 23, with county groups to gather input on farm and home management and production issues.
Weather: light snow or rain in northwest and occasional rain in southwest tonight. Warmer conditions tomorrow with occasional rain in the south and east and clearing in the northwest. Temperatures range from 22 to 32 tonight and 35 to 40 for today and Tuesday. Winds east at 5 to 10 mph increasing to 15 mph Tuesday.
Lester Hamil of the Washington Chamber of Commerce announced the annual spring opening for Washington merchants from Thursday March 22 through Saturday March 25. Stores stay open Thursday evening 7 to 9 and two windows will be unveiled at 7.00 Thursday. The event features new spring merchandise and a window transposition contest with $25 in cash prizes and about 20 merchandise articles. Three store windows with the most effective displays will receive loving cups from the Chamber.
President Truman issued an executive order delaying a planned strike by the switchmen's union of North America for at least 60 days. The move sets up an emergency board under the Railway Labor act to study the dispute affecting 12 western railroads and interstate commerce. Names of the board members will be announced later.

Valen tin A. Gubitchev, a Russian diplomat sentenced for spying, sails from New York aboard the Polish liner Batory after a 16-year suspended term was imposed. He tells reporters he wishes Judith Coplon luck as he departs, with U S authorities in custody.
Preliminary plans for Holy Week services in the YMCA community room each morning before Easter and the annual Easter sunrise service at 7 o'clock in the YMCA gymnasium are moving ahead. The programs, an Washington annual event, are sponsored by the YMCA to allow workers to attend without missing their shifts. Dr. Pennypacker, dean of Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant, will speak at the Easter sunrise service.
Leroy Yeggy of Riverside was fined one dollar for failure to stop at a red light and Harry W. Schimmel pfennig of Washington was fined five dollars for speeding. Both appeared before Justice H. M. Putnam.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee voted to cut 1 billion dollars from ECA authorizations for fiscal 1951 and replace the value with surplus commodities from the farm price support program. Rep. John M. Vorys led the amendment to reduce cash funds to 1.95 billion, claiming it would shield foreign aid from drastic cuts, while Chairman Kee warned it would cripple the domestic price support program and raise overall costs.
The State of Iowa versus Gerrit Ver Ploeg is postponed indefinitely. District Judge Yoder ordered jurors not to report on March 22 and said a new reporting date would be announced later. The case involves a change of venue from Mahaska County.
Arlo Weise 19 was killed Saturday night when a car sideswiped two trucks five miles west of Tama on Highway 30. Four youths were injured. Weise had lived in Washington in 1947 with his father who held a fencing contract during the railroad cut-off construction. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Weise.
Generals George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower defended U S Ambassador-at-Large Philip C Jessup against McCarthy's charges of an unusual affinity for communist causes They spoke in letters read into a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee record and praised Jessup's loyalty and service.
Iowa Farm Bureau officials announced the statewide good citizenship program will open with district meetings this week. Established in 1948 the effort aims to heighten awareness of individual government responsibilities through participation in party politics. The women’s group will reach rural voters at least three times before June 5 and leaders plan local caucuses across counties seeking full candidate slates for all offices.
