Iowa dry forces vow a broad statewide campaign against any move to repeal local option laws or adopt national repeal measures. B E Ewing head of the anti saloon league announced plans to build a large organized effort to defend Iowa 1914 dry laws stricter than national rules.
A late winter storm brings mixed precipitation across Iowa with freezing rain and light snow. Temperatures plunged from 62 to 19 as the system caused damage to Iowa Southern Utilities transformers and power lines, with repairs continuing and spring forecast for tomorrow.
The Iowa state Emergency Relief committee urges every family to plant a subsistence garden to ease the tax burden and aid the unemployed. The plan links to Reconstruction Finance Corpora tion funds and cooperative efforts with Iowa State College, with free garden calendars to be distributed via county agents. Public welfare groups and county chairs are asked to support the movement as a patriotic duty to secure food and health through summer and winter.
The junior college musical broadcast over WSUI is scheduled for 8 10 tomorrow night. The boys quartet and girls trio will perform with several solos by Velda V Parcell Vernette Johnson Harvey Coulter and William Stewart. Duane Petersen will play two piano solos and assist with accompaniment with Miss Helen Coffey accompanying other numbers. Mr and Mrs John Juston of Oldy shopped here Saturday.
Will Rogers states that Congress is reforming and behaving like citizens under President Roosevelt. He compares the president’s daily task list to a housewife’s menu and says lawmakers are finally thinking properly, improving the nation.
In Algona, Iowaa, Mark Sarehet former Kossuth county treasurer and his wife with two sons died when their home burned early today. Grandson Jerry Morrison and 17 year old orphan Tom Miller also perished. bodies found among the ruins. Fire likely started in the kitchen from an overheated range.
A United States civil service competitive examination is announced for the clerk carrier position in the Washington post office with applications due March 31. Applicants must use the prescribed form obtainable from Fred S Downing at the post office or from the assistant manager of the eighth civil service district at 6506 Postoffices Building in St Paul Minnesota. The assembly date for competitors will be stated on admission cards mailed to applicants.
Washington March 20 U P House and senate conferees agreed on legalized beer and wines of 3.2 percent alcohol content. The house adjourned until tomorrow to delay action and possibly legalize beer by April. The law becomes effective fifteen days after passage.
The first cottage prayer session was held this morning at 9 30 at Pastor Dr. F W Eastwood’s home. Tomorrow and Wednesday will follow at Harry McCall and B A Van Meter homes as part of preparations for special services led by the pastor at the Presbyterian church on April 2.
Mrs W E Acheson and her son in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs C L Kilgore were in town from Ainsworth on business today.
Geneva report says the League accepted U S participation in the Colombia Peru boundary dispute and that Mussolini's peace pact hinges on security pledges from Britain and the United States. Delegates from Britain France Italy and Germany study a European peace plan intended to last a generation.
Ruth Rice eighth grade pupil from St Marys Riverside wins the county spelling title by correctly spelling apologies and reciprocate to defeat Irma Gingerich of Pleasant Hill. Riverside and St Marys share the top honors as competitors from town and rural groups vie for state contest entry.
Merle Thompson of Brighton will discuss trees at 7 45 p m Thursday in the Y community room. Slides of lawn gardens will be shown and Mrs A E Baldrige will accompany the program. The event, free to all ages, includes music and garden images from Washington and local Iowa gardens.
Miss Isabelle Davis spent the weekend in Des Moines visiting friends and sightseeing. She attended several local events and returned home Sunday with plans for future trips.

For the period March 20 to 25 expect generally fair skies in the lower Missouri valleys and northern Great Plains with normal temperatures early. Cloudiness and rising temperatures midweek bring precipitation mainly to northern sections, with moderate warmth toward the end of the period.
About fifty members of the Washington County Taxpayers League urged the board of supervisors to cut the 17 mill levy for secondary road work to 2.5 mills. EF D Morrison presented petitions asking rescission of part of the levy and to use Speidel bill provisions and other funds, including bridge refunds and gasoline tax, to cover road costs.
Funeral services for William H. Kurtz were conducted yesterday afternoon at L. A. Jones Funeral Home by Dr. F. Witaigman. Interment at Shrock Cemetery was postponed due to weather and conditions.
