District court action in the case of the State of Iowa versus Richard Wallace Houston, charged with larceny in the night time, continued today. A late season blizzard swept across western to eastern Iowa, bringing winds to 55 mph and up to eight inches of snow. Thousands lost power and many towns faced telephone outages. About 4,200 basketball fans at the state tournament in Des Moines sheltered at Veterans Memorial Auditorium while others were stranded or bussed home. At least 35 northeastern schools closed and several highways remained closed. The storm caused three reported deaths in highway accidents.

More than 430 people attended the 21st annual Washington County Pork Producers banquet with Eddie Collins of Red Oak Iowa delivering a market report aired by 75 radio stations and 160 newspapers. He urged new ideas to promote pork and urged nam es on products rather than packers. Wives were told to let buyers come to them, while Collins noted his Evening Journal column. The program, led by Larry Marek, honored top finishers in the second barrow test with Wilfred McCreedy taking first. New directors were elected to replace retiring members. Windsor chops were served, barbequed by Jim Rich and Bob Redlinger.

Malpractice Award To Mason City Couple Tops $1 Million
A Crawford County district judge awarded more than 1 million dollars to Mr. and Mrs. Orvin Schnebly in a malpractice suit against Dr. John M. Baker of Mason City. The ruling found Baker the sole proximate cause of their son Kelly Schnebly’s mental retardation due to delayed treatment for a blood compatibility problem after his 1964 birth. The award totaled 1,044,798 with 912,624 to the child and 132,174 to the Schneblys, while cross petitions against Mercy Hospital and two pathologists were dismissed.
