Wellman hosts a sectional high school meet Friday and Saturday with contestants from Washington and nearby towns. Winners advance to the district contest in April here. Washington schools enter only in vocal and instrumental events at Wellman, while its glee club, mixed chorus and band go directly to the larger meet.
A Washington county board of supervisors meeting awarded the gasoline contract for road building and maintenance to Economy Oil Co. of Washington. About 60,000 gallons will be used this year after bids were opened.
The Wellman Bringaman pool hall was broken into Saturday night or Sunday morning and about 7,000 revenue stamped cigarettes were stolen along with some smoking tobacco. Entrance was gained through a transom over the front door. the site has a history of repeated burglaries with cigarette loot.
Rev. Vernon H. L. Carter was installed as pastor of the Christian Church in Washington. Dean Jesse C. Caldwell of Drake University preached the sermon and delivered the charge to the pastor. Caldwell urged a minister who is sincere and a true gentleman both in public and in soul.
Rev. James B. Hodgson of Williamsburg preached at the Presbyterian church as part of a week of speedmenten services. He drew from I am the vine ye are the branches and spoke of Christ preaching anywhere, anytime to listening passersby rather than in a fixed church setting.
The youth led the evening service at United Presbyterian Church as Richard Stewart and David Fulton spoke on the role of youth in society and world peace. They urged guidance from older generations and discussed the appeal of Bible living over denominational barriers.

High school vocalists and three small instrumental groups practice for the final trim of the musi contest at Wellman Friday and Saturday. A concert is set for Washington high school auditorium at 7:50 Wednesday night with admission 10 and 15 cents to defray contest expenses. Vocalists include toy and girl glee clubs mixed chorus and various quartets sextets and talents. Instrumental performers will be brass string and woodwind groups. The boys glee club and tamned chorus skip Wellman contest but take part later. The girls glee club will sing Friday night at Wellman, competing against Fairfield. Mrs Harrys Pearson of Ainsworth attended. Bolee Clarenese Logan and Arthur Duensing were ordained and installed as elders. Hervy Finney was installed as a member of the session.
