UPI reports the Soviet Union ignored Washington's warning to return three captive U.S. fliers and refused to allow an American doctor to treat one airman. Col John A. Hennessen Jr. found 1st Lt. Harold Welch in good condition with a fractured left leg and a right arm in a plaster cast at Magdeburg hospital as the crew of an RB66 remained in Soviet custody after the downing over East Germany.

95th Birthday of Clara Godlove Celebrated at Home
Mrs. Clara Godlove aged 95, confined to a wheelchair but lucid and vivacious, will celebrate her 95th birthday Friday March 20. Born in Ohio and raised in Johnson County Iowa, she lived in Haskins and worked as a telephone operator and longtime Washington Evening Journal correspondent. She and her late husband John M. Godlove raised eight children. her many descendants span several states. A Presbyterian, she enjoys reading sewing and hymns, and credits hard work and humor for her long life.

City to use alleys for trash pickup and land fill hours set
The sanitation truck will begin alley collection in residential areas on Monday March 23. Raymond Miller says the city land fill south of town will operate 7 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and 8 to 11 am Sundays starting April 1, through December 1, 1964.
