Indiana Governor Harold Handley blamed a $32 million tax error in the state budget on his Irish ancestry. He told an Ancient Order of Hibernians meeting that his great great grandfather came from the Auld Sod and quoted I DO IT BIG to defend his approach.
Israel sent a test freighter through the Gulf of Aqaba and appeared to clear the Strait of Tiran as Finnish UN troops watched from Sharm el Sheikh. Egyptian papers warned hostilities could resume over Israel’s demands on Aqaba and the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Foreign Minister Golda Meir held a lengthy talks with Secretary of State John Foster Dulles in Washington over Gaza Strip tensions. They discussed US plans to help prevent Gaza from being used as a base for Egyptian commando raids and Egypts control of civil and police powers in the territory.

Miss Bess Skinner 78 of 215 North Second Avenue died at 7 a m in Bolar Nursing Home after illness since May 1956. Private rites set for Wednesday at 1 30 p m at Jones Funeral Home with Dr Walter Scheuermann officiating. Burial in Hillsboro Cemetery. Born August 10 1878 in Red Oak Iowa she came to Washington in 1927. Survived by sister Mrs Ida Wood and brother Dale Skinner with several nephews and nieces.
Bernard Kuhns, 32, free on $2,000 bond while awaiting grand jury action on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm after a Friday night shooting that wounded his wife Mary 27 and neighbor Rex Wycoff 27 near Eldon Iowa. Wycoff was in fair condition. Mrs Kuhns suffered a hand wound.
A late winter storm drenched northern Iowa with about 10 inches of snow and brought rain to the south. About 100 schools closed in nine northwestern counties around Sioux City, Spencer, Spirit Lake and Primghar. Spencer saw 6 inches by noon while northern areas expected up to 10 inches. highways were partly or fully snow covered and transport delayed.

A Saudi prince and his small son visited America, with the boy receiving treatment at Walter Reed Hospital under Colonel Sterling Ritchey. Ritchey, a Iowa native and State University of Iowa alumnus, previously practiced medicine in Newton and Colfax before joining the army. The royal patient, Prince Mashur aged 3½, was described as a fine child and the staff grew fond of him.
In Hollywood the ninth annual Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Awards honored Trevor Palance as best television actor and Clair Trevor as best actress for 1956. Sid Caesar won five awards, Requiem for a Heavyweight tied for best program, and Playhouse 90 named best new program. CBS led with 14 awards, NBC had 13, ABC two, with New York earning 15 to Hollywood's 14. Edward R. Murrow swept news honors, Perry Como and Dinah Shore topped personality awards, and Loretta Young and Robert Young upset in continuing drama wins.
In West Frankfort Illinois 44 year old jeweler Herman Behn killed his mother Minnie 70 and his daughters Kay 10 Linda 14 and Shirley 12 with a hammer before shooting himself near a planned wedding to Mel detta Minto 34. Coroner called it murder and death by own action and an inquest was scheduled.

A 250 pound brass bell that once topped a Chesapeake and Ohio steam locomotive was installed in the steeple of the Muncie Free Methodist Church in Indiana.
Funeral services for Fred M Lindenmeyer 76 will be held Tuesday at 2 p m in the West Chester Methodist Church. A West Chester Bank cashier until his 1948 retirement he died Saturday at his home after a three year illness. He was born October 1 1880 in Illinois and studied at Valparaiso and Drake University. Survivors include his wife two daughters two sons three brothers and several grandchildren. Burial is in Elm Grove Cemetery with Jones Funeral Home in charge.
Washington Chamber of Commerce will attend a hearing in Ottumwa on March 20 regarding Milwaukee Railroad’s plan to end passenger service through Washington. A delegation from the chamber will travel at 8 a.m. to oppose the cut and invite riders to join as witnesses. Call No. 400 for details.
Rescue teams found the charred body of Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay and at least 24 others in the wreckage on Mount Bagao Cebu. Officials fear sabotage after reports of an explosion. Vice President Garcia flew from Sydney to assume the presidency.

Three persons escaped injury Saturday when their car went out of control at the junction of highways 78 and 1 two miles east of Richland and overturned into a ditch. Driver Harold L. Walker of Ottumwa was joined by his wife and grandson Ricky Lee Clark. The vehicle traveled east on 78 then turned south on 1 before the loss of control. Damage to the auto was not extensive.

Davenport woman Donna Donahue 27 leapt from a Bettendorf bridge into the Mississippi River. A Moline man John Snell guided a rescue rope as a boat closed in and she was pulled from the water in critical condition at St Luke's Hospital. Authorities cited despondency over financial problems.
President grants Senate Rackets Committee power to inspect income and tax returns of Teamsters President Dave Beck and others under investigation. The scope covers returns since 1945 and could include Portland Mayor Terry Schrunk and Multnomah County District Attorney William Langley. Beck disclosed loans from Teamsters funds totaling 300 000 to 400 000 over a decade, with repayment claimed. Hoffa awaits indictment as federal grand jury considers charges linked to access to the committee files. Kennedy cautioned the case is broader than Beck’s TV statements and noted delays in Beck’s appearance. Hearings resume Tuesday with Western Conference head Frank Brewster on the stand.
The Iowa Southern News reports Tom Gray now manages Grinnell district for a utilities company. He and wife live in Grinnell with one daughter Sue Ann. Gray recently became president of the Grinnell Rotary Club and active in local civic affairs.
