Federal state city and county agencies fund a 1 000 000 rehabilitation plan as flood tolls rise with 250 to 275 dead and about 200 missing. Relief crews rush in, dam site report due, guards doubled, contaminated water precautions and passes tightened.
The Washington Y M C A basketball team defeated Riverside Odd Fellows 75 to 22 yesterday evening at Riverside High School. The game featured strong defense and a decisive second half by the visitors.
Ottumwa known as the mystery team will face Spirit Lake in the University of Iowa field house tonight for the high school championship. Ottumwa edged Cedar Falls Teachers 29 to 28 with a dramatic final second rally, while Spirit Lake topped Sioux City East 21 to 14 to reach the final.
The weather outlook covers March 19 to 24 1928 across the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys and the northern and central plains. Temperatures remain near seasonal normals with brief deviations expected in northern regions while southern portions trend toward fair conditions.

Floyd Bennett piloted the craft from St. Albans Vermont to Grandmere Quebec, with officials deeming inland flight plausible. A detective was sent toward North Point to check the report.
Jeanette Karel of Washington high school won first place in the humorous division at the sub-district declamatory contest with Oi Such a Family in Jewish dialect. Helen Thomas, Dennis Huntington, Lisle Edwards and others placed in their respective classes as judges and a large audience attended.
Announcement states the annual Y W C A dinner will be held April 12 in the Y M C A community room with the Business and Professional Women's Club joining. Proceeds or tickets priced fifty cents will be sold soon at Nicola and Harmon book store Commercial Savings Bank and the high school. The event honors Washington high school Girl Reserves seniors.
The House approved a naval authorization bill adding fifteen cruisers and one aircraft carrier at a cost of 274000000 dollars. The vote was 287 to 58. Representative Blanton of Texas opposed a record vote on the measure.
Iowa farm data show 1927 beef output lower but receipts up by 21.6 million dollars while pork gains pushed value down by 35 million. Cattle sales totaled 1,825,308. hog marketings rose to 11,560,871. sheep up to 994,260 but value fell by 840,000. A high farm mortgage burden persists.
W M Keeley, a Washington lawyer of over twenty years, joins Keelen Woods Weisel Keeley in Chicago with offices at Otis Building 10 South a Salle Street. He will keep Washington offices and visit as needed. The Keeley family may move to Chicago after the school year ends in May.
In Detour Michigan six hundred villagers planned to eat three meals today for the first time since February 29 when heavy snows cut off all outside contact and left a scarce food supply. A team of seven huskies broke through snow drifts and a transport plane delivered several hundred pounds of food yesterday, with a second flight by Vieut Joseph Sopher of Chanutefield, Rantoul Illinois, and a third flight planned for today.
A solo contest to select a representative for Washington High at the district meet in Sigourney on April 5 will be held next Tuesday evening at the high school. Admission fees apply. The program lists soprano pieces, piano selections, and instrumental performances by named students and teachers, with credits to composers and arrangers.
Mr and Mrs Charles Holcomb living at 227 7 West Madison street woke at midnight to gas from a heating stove nearly suffocating them. Holcomb had filled the stove with coal before bed and Mrs Holcomb alerted him as she grew exhausted. The couple had recently moved from the north part of town.
Mrs Keeley has led social circles and remains an active member of the Y W C A and other women’s groups in the community supporting civic and charitable activities.
William Edward Hickman, tied to the Marion Parker kidnapping and murder, entered San Quentin to await his April 27 execution. He traveled with Welby Hunt, his accomplice in the Ivy Toms drugstore slaying, as both headed to the state penitentiary for life and capital punishment respectively.
Senator Ferris a 75 year old Michigan Democrat is described as very serious by his office. He has been confined to a hotel room since last Friday with a serious cold that threatens pneumonia and his condition is being watched closely.
The navy announced plans to deploy 950 enlisted Marines to Nicaragua this week. Recruits will come from East Coast barracks including Guantanamo Bay Coco Solo and the Canal Zone with detachments aboard the scouting fleet’s battleships. Fifty officers will accompany the force.
Wilbur Marsh former treasurer of the Democratic National Committee denies to United Press any agreement with the late Republican treasurer Fred Upham to withhold publication of 1928 campaign expenditures. His rebuttal follows testimony by Til Hinsley and A V Leonard before the Senate Teapot Dome committee in Chicago. Marsh was subpoenaed to appear in Washington next Wednesday.
The high school band under Milburn McKay will perform next Thursday at the YMCA for the Boy Scouts of Washington whose funds are low. Tickets cost 20 cents, with Scouts canvassing the community to raise money. Badges will be awarded to Scouts for recent achievements including second class and merit badges, with named recipients listed.
The fifth in the series of young men's forum meetings will take place Sunday afternoon at three o'clock in the M. A. The speaker Dr. Bowers will give a talk and answer questions. Last week drew the largest crowd yet as attendance grows. Claud Tucker will lead music and Leland Morrison preside. All men in Washington county are invited.
Berlin reports German General Electric confirms engineer Herr Geldstein freed from prison over alleged anti Soviet plot and to return to Germany.
The Emanen boys club meets at George Means home with members George Means Daryl Dodder George Wilson Walter Jungbluth Billy Kreider and Willis Jones. They form a committee to build a bird house for the M C A and hear a six minute talk on Benjamin Franklin. A lunch followed as the group notes they all had a good time.
The passage notes that by mouth and throat dimensions many shark species could gulp a human whole. It emphasizes the potential danger in encounters with large sharks.
Des Moines publisher E. T. Meredith, a former secretary of agriculture, states he does not want to be a presidential candidate but would consider a Meredith delegation to the Democratic national convention if Iowa Democrats push for it. He notes opposition to endorsing his candidacy and points to upcoming April county and state conventions with Dan Steck delivering the keynote.
