Pension Demands Spark Legal Challenge in Coal Fight
John L. Lewis faced a three day deadline as soft coal mine owners demanded the miners halt the walkout over pensions. Ezra Van Horn said the demand violates the Taft Hartley act and urged joint court action to appoint an impartial umpire. The dispute centers on 200 a month pensions for 60 plus with 20 years service, funded by a health and welfare fund. The strike pushed 319,000 United Mine Workers to a two day stoppage, idling about 77 percent of the union's 400,000 members and halting large portions of production in Alabama, Ohio and Kentucky.

Convict captured after woman's intuition in Iowa
A Fort Madison prison farm escapee, Robert Tapps, 27, was taken into custody in Marshalltown after a woman, who later alerted police, allowed him to sleep on her porch then reported him. Police soon arrested him, crediting the woman's suspicion.
