Otto Stamp, an Avoca dairy driver in Oakland, likely saved Mr. and Mrs. John Kallbom and their 9 year old son Wendell by forcing entry after noticing a partially filled cream can. He found them unconscious from gas and opened doors and windows while help arrived. The family revived after three hours.

In Ida Grove, Iowa, March 16, an all male jury found William Lorenzen, 59, a farmer, guilty of murder in the first degree for poisoning his wife with strichnine last October. The jury recommended life imprisonment after a trial begun yesterday afternoon and resumed this morning.
W G Holland of Gastonia N C died after enlisting at Camp Croft his monthly pay totaled 268 dollars as nine dependent children were listed at the time of his entry The report notes his age and the wartime service record for the period.

The House approved the compromise soldier vote measure and sent it to President Roosevelt for signature. It allows overseas servicemembers to use the federal bob-tail ballot if they applied for a state ballot and were denied by October 1, with state approval required.
Chairman Theodore B Bailey of the Washington county Republican central committee released the schedule for the county convention to be held in the court room at the courthouse Friday at ten oclock. The meeting opens with the call for the meeting and selection of chairman and secretary, then credentials and resolutions committees, and a home delegates group of 25 to the state convention at Des Moines March 31. A musical number and brief talk by Ross Van Nostrand precede committee reports and business, with adjournment expected by noon. Delegates numbering 15 were chosen at precinct caucuses earlier this week.
Seven Washington county registrants left for Des Moines for induction at Camp Dodge after pre induction exams. They include Quincey I Rice William Elmer Nevis David D Plank Arden L Dawson of Wellman Samuel Robert Warren Herbert C Pauly of Washington and Vaun Wesley Cochran of Mt Pleasant. Others with pre induction exams are expected to report for service later this month.
The Washington county A C A and the local agricultural conservation committee announce dairy feed subsidy payments for February. Eligible February production and sales from February 1 to 29, 1944, receive five cents per pound of butterfat and five cents per hundredweight for whole milk. Final filing date is April 30, 1944, for February or combined January and February payments. if January eligibility exceeded one dollar, the cutoff is March 31, 1944. As of February 29, 1944, October, November, and December production are no longer eligible.
Dr. Albert Parry spoke at the high school addressing wary American views of Soviet cooperation after the war. He noted a changed Russian nationalism, less driven by communism, and said mutual misunderstanding stems from vast cultural differences. He predicted Russia will avoid another war and will hold a large army.

Clyde Spry announced the state soil conservation committee will hold a Washington county hearing on March 25 at 1 30 p m in the YMCA. The session invites county farmers to testify for or against establishing a soil district to address conservation, erosion control, drainage and related problems. A petition signed by at least half of landowners is required to initiate the process, with over 24 percent already on record.
Helsinki March 15 The Finnish Parliament reportedly approved a government proposal to reject the Soviet six point peace terms offered to Finland. Premier Edvin Miekka's administration was described as unwilling to negotiate on the terms and the move ends any immediate chance of further armistice talks with Russia.
More than 100 freight cars were destroyed or damaged in the attack on the capital region's east coast ports, causing significant disruption to shipping and logistics in the area.

Allied land and air forces unleashed a massive attack on Cassino in central Italy. About 1,400 tons of bombs dropped from Mediterranean air fleets from dawn to noon, with another 1,400 tons of explosives targeting German positions in nearby hills. The heavy air and ground assault aimed to crush Nazi defenses and push toward Rome. Observers reported Cassino wiped from the earth by the combined bombardment and shelling.

Mrs Harry Dye presided and Mrs R G Greer of Riverside was secretary. John Walsh of Riverside resigned as county chairman. Harry Dye elected to fill vacancy. Walsh has moved to Arizona.
Fire Department responded to a morning call at the corner of North Avenue and West Eighth Street after a stove was overturned. Fire officials feared damage but found none.
