Mrs. Bertha Mare, longtime assistant director of Polk County relief, is appointed acting director to replace Allan W Houngsthin who has resigned. The move is outlined in a Des Moines column noting state relief efforts and leadership changes affecting local aid operations.
Warden Glenn C. Haynes announced in Fort Madison that two of four men convicted in the December 12 1981 Cap ital City State Bank vault robbery attempt in Des Moines have been released on parole. Wincel Urban and John Buddy Lugar were among the.group, with two others not named.
Leona Schultz seven years old found a rusty pistol on a closet shelf as her family moved from a Teetersville farm to a dwelling on the town outskirts. The gun discharged striking Mrs Edward Schultz 42 in the heart before adults could intervene.
Iowa City Dr. W C Groenne Davenport surgeon was badly hurt when his car collided with another driven by Christ Studt of Iowa City. Groenne has three broken ribs and a broken collarbone and is hospitalized at the University of Iowa. He was to lead the fraternity homecoming program.

Firemen from Garner and Klemme battled a five hour blaze that razed a half block in Klemme's business district seven miles south of Garner. The E F Jacobs aard Ware store post office John Day store and Stott grocery were destroyed. San Larson meat market damaged.
Newcomer Gilmer Seegmiller is named assistant manager at the Graham store. He has spent nearly five years with the Graham organization and previously served as assistant manager at Decorah. He notes community appeal, worries about room shortages, is unmarried, and belongs to the Lutheran church.
In a split vote the senate passed and sent to the house a bill to divert profits from state liquor stores to new state buildings and repairs. The measure targets funds now averaging about 1.2 billion dollars annually for designated construction needs, with supporters arguing it would address liquor related evils. Senator Leo Elthon of Fertile backs the plan for building the insane hospital and other projects, while Dewey of Washington opposed.
Jurors for the Maren term of district court reported this afternoon but no cases on the assignment were ready for trial. Judge J. G. Patterson studied the docket and interviewed attorneys to determine a trial date later this week or next, and recessed the jury until a suitable case could be tried.
Nevers, former Stanford All American back and Lafayette coach, will join Coach Tubbe at the State University of Iowa as backfield and end coach. Prof Shrader announced Nevers will report by April 1 to begin duties.
Mrs Aten Rich 32 of Wayland died last evening after a fall on ice five weeks earlier. Funeral at Green Mound church tomorrow at 2:30 with burial in Green Mound cemetery. Alice Smith born 1904 near Green Mound married to Allen Rich in 1923 mother of seven, survived by husband, parents, five children and several siblings. Chris Boshart, longtime Wayland resident, died Saturday after over two years of illness. Funeral at Mennonite church tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
With the filing deadline reached on Saturday evening, city election nominations are closed for March 29. The Citizens and Economy tickets list candidates for mayor and other posts, with several seats unopposed and several offices lacking candidates.

Miss Phyllis Flenner of Des Moines spent the weekend at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs T A Flenner.
Rev D Chalmers Fulton resigns after eight and a half years at Washington United Presbyterian Church. The resignation will be presented to the presbytery on April 12 and take effect April 18, leaving the pulpit vacant. Fulton came to Washington in 1928 from Philadelphia where he led a mission church he started.
Justice of the Peace J F Rovec tried 17 year old David Ashby for reckless driving. Ashby found guilty and fined 25 dollars plus costs. Appeal noted to the district court. Case stemmed from a December collision between a car and a truck at Ainsworth injuring several boys, one seriously. George F Morrison prosecuted for the state. S W Livingston defended. Mr and Mrs George Struble were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Ray Cox.
State leaders Paul Taff and Arthur Wallace spoke at the Washington county 4-H banquet in the Methodist church. The event, directed by County Agent W J Roudabush, featured magician Charles Coonie and drew 100 plus youth and leaders for an evening of information inspiration and entertainment. Taff highlighted Iowa 4-H membership reaching 26000 as part of a global youth program with strong educational aims.
Routing of trains over the Milwaukee between Washington and Muscatine resumed today after tracks were cleared and damage repaired from a freight wreck near Gladwin late Saturday afternoon. The drawbar of a freight car dropped to the track causing three empty cars to derail on the Iowa river bridge. The bridge and track suffered damage and two cars fell into shallow water.
Arthur Nicola dies at Ottumwa hospital after pneumonia complications. The service will be Tuesday at 2 PM at L A Jones funeral home in Columbus Junction with Rev Victor Bloomquist officiating. He was born November 25 1897 south of Washington, son of Charles and Permelia Reed Nicola.
Detroit March 15 Circuit Judge Campbell granted a temporary injunction ordering sitdown strikers who seized eight Chrysler plants to evacuate by nine oclock Wednesday The court said there can be compromise between the rule of law and violent self help Gov Murphy called a 20 leader conference for Wednesday with civic employers union and public representatives to discuss coping with the situation About 500 union men and sympathizers were inside the county building for the decision and another as many outside The executives declined further comment
Four miles southeast of Wayland the Joe Nebel farm home burned yesterday forenoon while the family attended church. Smoke appeared under the eaves and the house was a total loss with only bed clothing saved. Insurance partially covers the damage.
Mr and Mrs Ralph C Niece were gassed at their Iowa City home and rushed to a hospital in serious condition. Police investigated the incident as accidental.
On March 15 1902 Frank Bandy bought the transfer business of the late Friday Mason and since then has hauled goods around Washington.
The obituary notes the death of a Packwood area resident born on a family farm south of Washington. He married Mabel Virginia Snider on December 4 1918 and lived on farms near his birthplace and later near Packwood Iowa. Surviving are his wife three sons one daughter and several siblings. He was active in the Christian church serving as Sunday school superintendent and Packwood school board member.
