Dr. Arthur G. Norman of the Rothamsted experimental station in Harpenden, England, is appointed pro fessor of soil bacteriology and research professor of soil bacteriology at Iowa State College, according to reports.
Mrs Virgil Shaffer of Audubon reports a six month old wildcat kept as a pet. The animal, obtained in Texas, eats a pound of hamburger daily and plays with the house dogs. She wears gloves when handling the kitten to guard against a possible change in disposition.
The will of Frank F. Failor 78 a former stock breeder florist and seedsman of Newton leaves his estate to his son Francis Failor of Newton while daughter Ella Marye Failor of Detroit Michigan receives one dollar. The document marks a clear division between successor heirs and a token bequest to the daughter.
Allan W. Houghton of Des Moines, longtime director of Polk county relief committee since 1933, will take charge of the National Business Training School in Sioux City after a sale announced by A. R. Beard. The Sioux City school, founded in 1902, now has 259 students and 12 instructors.
Earl Harlan, a passerby, waded into the West Fork river four miles west of AREDALE and tossed a fence wire to three girls Mildred De Freese G Francs Mason and Doronty Porter aged 8 to 11 who were clinging to broken ice. The wire saved them from drowning.
The Sioux City Bar voted not to recommend reinstate ment for Max Duckworth former Woodbury county attorney who resigned during a graft investigation His reinstatement application filed with the Iowa supreme court was sent back to Sioux City for local approval decision.
The Iowa Conservation Commission moved catfish open season to April 1 in Burlington and 47 other southern Iowa counties. The change, requested by many sportsmen, shifts the start six weeks earlier than last year and coincides with the statewide trout season opening on April 1.
Arthur Reppert secretary treasurer and general manager of the Burlington Sanitary Milk Co. and president of the Tri State Fair Corp. was named Citizen No. 1 for 1926 by the American Business club. The announcement was made at the club luncheon by Capt. Raymond H. Wright.

In London on March 13 Soviet ambassador Ivan Maisky delivered a sharp warning to Germany and Japan to stay away from Soviet Russia. He denounced their German Japanese agreement as a military alliance and asserted the USSR could defend its territory single handed against any power or coalition, urging the foes not to test Soviet strength.

The Washington stores and Chamber of Commerce announced the Easter window display contest winners after a larger than expected ballot count. Prizes ranged from five to twenty five dollars, with Rothschild's, Westphals, and Rubeachers leading in votes and winners present to collect cash at the Steie theater.

Madrid faces its gravest test since the civil war began as rebels threaten the city with most roads to the coast cut off. A crowd of 250 attended the bingo games at city hall last evening for the high school band benefit and $45 was taken in. Brighton took first in oratory Mérei lia Stout read The Challenge to America Shirley Richardson of Keota won dramatic reading Mississippi Magic and James Lyle of Keota ranked first in humorous reading The Flea Gang's First Cigar. Second places went to Doris Klepfer Washington for oratory Iva Kathryn Ridgeway Ollie for dramatic and Max Purdy Packwood for humorous reading. Judge was Professor Marshbarger from State University of Iowa.
An ice jam nine miles long formed today in the Missouri river flooding lowlands southeast of Jefferson South Dakota. A smaller jam near Salix Iowa caused farm land flooding and sent water into Round Lake.

Nomination papers circulate for two opposing tickets led by O. E. Schmitt for mayor. The Economy ticket lists McFarlane Anwyl Jackson and others to vie for council seats while the Citizens ticket backers include Lytle Mlick Lemley and Reid with a park commissioner candidate Mrs Marion Bailey.
Funeral services for John Mather 90 a native of Washington were held this morning at L. A. Jones Funeral Home with Pastor Dr Arthurs Atack presiding. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers included Clift Plumly Cartton Wilson Dr A W Clow Albert Donovan Harve Busby and William Darbyshire.
Bob Barclay returns home from Grinnell College to spend the weekend with his parents Mr and Mrs Glenn Barclay.
Jack Norton is jailed awaiting a hearing on a larceny charge filed by Sheriff Harold M. Putnam after Norton’s truck tire matched a tire reported stolen from the A. J. Robertson barn near Grace Hill quarry. Norton says he found the tire on the road. The charge was filed in Justice of the Peace J. B. Royce’s office.
Richard Fuller of Wellman was sentenced by Justice of the Peace W. Eldridge to six days in the county jail after pleading guilty to cashing a bogus check at the Candy Kitchen.

Iowa City notes Rod ney Stewart a University of Iowa graduate student presents a new play Children of Thunder in the experimental theater series. The play explores incidents in the life of Black Hawk a Sauk chief and will be shown to First Nighters club members before opening to the public.
Legislation in the Iowa legislature shows 45 of 855 bills filed have been enacted by both houses. The governor signed 23. one veto occurred. Week's activity added 256 new bills, with 381 in the Senate and 473 in the House to date. The Senate passed 89 bills. the House 76.
Des Moines reports the civil service bill for cities over 15 000 population passed the town house 78 to 14 and moves to the senate. Rep P C Rasmussen of Council Bluffs carried the measure. The act would cover all appointive officers and employees except city clerks and solicitors.
DETROIT March 13 thousands of workers packed the county building as Chrysler seeks an injunction from Circuit Judge Allan Campbell to evict sitdown strikers occupying eight plants since Monday. Union forces marched outside the court and inside the packed room banners and flags appeared as a continuance was requested to present arguments.
