In Des Moines authorities report thousands of dollars hoarded were turned in as confidence returned to banks. By midweek 180 banks in Iowa were open for unlimited banking and more releases were expected. Des Moines and Washington notes indicate further bank reopenings and federal action.
The Waterloo Savings Bank led reopening results with $186,000 more in deposits than withdrawals on its first day. State banks will lift restrictions once at least half their assets are liquid, announced Supt. L A Andrew of the state department.
Fitchburg Massachusetts population over 40000 now has a sole surviving Civil War veteran George J Jewett as reported by United Press.

In Des Moines on March 15 an apparent tax revisionist victory was doomed by an overlooked motion and a last minute party swing. Senator George Patterson failed to table a reconsideration, and Democratic caucus leverage forced reconsideration of amendments that kept six tax revision bills from reaching a sitting committee.
Santa Monica report says Mr. Roosevelt delivered a Sunday night message that comforted listeners and urged radio announcers to simplify. The president tackled banking with a dry topic, yet made it understandable even for bankers.

Judge Frank Bechly yesterday assigned non jury cases for the term starting Monday March 2 at two oclock. Cases include Reeves vs Carter and L A Andrew receiver vs Washington Loan and Trust Co with further matters in the trust company receivership. Grand jury was dismissed pending recall if needed.
Mrs Dowell returns from Oakland Calif where her son Malcola Dowell died. Following his last wish his body was cremated and ashes will be sent to Des Moines next week. Mrs Hattie Haskins of Des Moines is ill. her granddaughter Elizabeth Dowell and her great son and daughter traveled to Des Moines to assist.
Mrs Will Shalla of near Kalona shopped in Washington yesterday.
The Senate Finance Committee amended the 3.2 beer bill to include wines and fruit juices and voted to report it favorably. Senator Reed predicted legal beer by April 3. The panel kept other provisions, allowing unrestricted advertising, and said the bill would reach the full Senate tomorrow.
The Washington county spelling contest takes place Saturday with two upper grade events for town and rural pupils and a lower grade rural bee in the courthouse and at the Washington junior high. Admission is five cents and a county representative will advance to the state bee in Des Moines on May 6.
All members are requested to attend a general meeting tomorrow Thursday at 8 o clock in City Hall. Important business preliminary to opening the season will be discussed and every member should be present without fail.
The Iowa railway commission wrapped up yesterday afternoon the hearing on the Rieke company of Burlington to haul freight by truck from Burlington to Oskaloosa on a regular schedule. A decision will be announced later. Several witnesses and spectators from towns to be served attended.
Firefighters responded to a roof blaze at 415 South Fourth Avenue, likely sparked by a chimney. The fire damaged a large hole in the roof but was extinguished with chemical extinguishers from the roof and the attic. The Porter family were away and a neighbor alerted the fire department.
Relief parties searched wreckage in Tennessee Arkansas and Missouri after storms killed 31 people and injured more than 500. Hospitals were crowded with the injured as National Guard troops patrolled the stricken district around Nashville and property losses neared a million dollars.
