The House passed the beer bill at 4 08 today by an overwhelming vote and sent it to the Senate. The measure would legalize beer, lager, ale and porter at 4.2 percent by weight with a $5 per barrel federal tax and a $1000 brewer license, taking effect fifteen days after presidential approval.
The Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars invites ex service men and the public to a rally at city hall auditorium on Wednesday evening March 15. Milton W. Strickle ot Des Moines will speak on veteran legislation and the economy league. George J. Schreex of Des Moines, State Adjutant and National Liaison Officer, will discuss service disability claim allowances.
A Burlington delegation, over 30 cars, arrived in Washington at noon and toured the town. A saxophone sextet entertained after the fire chief’s car siren and horns drew attention. They carried banners like Burlington Has faith in the Future and Prosperity Has Rounded the Corner. The group dined in Washington, presented sweet peas to local women, and reserved plates for fifty at the Congress. Mayor Applegate welcomed them. Mayor Smith of Burlington responded.
Sixty members of the Packwood high school band will perform a concert Thursday evening to benefit the student activity fund. Under Milburn McKay the ensemble, praised as one of the finest in the area, draws local enthusiasm for the event.
The Washington county emergency relief committee urges property owners to undertake repairs and improvements to absorb surplus labor. Frank R. Sage says such work, alongside relief efforts, will ease unemployment and reduce tax burdens. Register for work with Mrs Edlla Miller at the courthouse. funds are not available for personal loans.
The column mocks reactions to disasters noting California papers labeled the quake plainly while politicians and finance leaders faced criticism. It jokes that every place bears its calamities from cyclones and floods to Wall Street and lobbyists, ending with a quip on J P Morgan.
Judith Ann Wallerich, two weeks old and daughter of Elmer and Helen Wallerich, died. The notice records the infant’s name and parental lines in a brief obituary-like item.
A warm day gave way to a sharp drop in temperature with a hail storm causing damage. Temperatures reached 68 in Des Moines with a 36 dew point, 0.42 inch rainfall, and hail stones reported as large as hickory nuts. Wolf greenhouse glass and State Theater canopy light bulbs were damaged. Keokuk reached 74 degrees.
A child died yesterday at the family home near Richland. The body was moved to L. A. Jones Funeral Home for burial arrangements at Talley RAND cemetery with Rev. Carl W. Klein presiding. The child was the sole occupant of the home.
Ainsworth voters elect five directors for the consolidated school. L. M. Robertson leads with 121 votes, followed by John Koehler 118, D. D. Stephens 84, John Jones 24, Karl Wood 6, and Roger Colthurst 4. Petition issues affected the last three candidates. 160 votes were cast. economy was the main issue.
Des Moines March 14 The Iowa senate voted to cut deficiency judgment limits from ten to two years. Farmers who visited the legislature sought 12 bills for relief, but lawmakers moved through their calendar while warning they may return. The farmers adopted a resolution urging enactment of relief measures and repeal of the farm mortgage relief act.
A wood jigsaw puzzle from Foster drug store stock bought by E. C. Carris in 1895 is now shown in McDaniel's window. The 18 by 12 inch puzzle features a Palestine map on one side and Solomon's temple on the other, originally priced at $1.50. Carris kept it through the years, later sharing with his children Kenneth and Ica, and it regained interest with a renewed jigsaw fad.
Judge Frank Bechly announced today that March term juries may not hear any jury cases. Grand jury impaneling was delayed, and pell jurors were told they will likely not be required yet may be called later. Several arraignments occurred with guilty pleas and various dismissals and judgments noted among business on the docket.
Three Craighead county deputy sheriffs were forced to walk home from a ride when moon shiners disabled their car as the officers hunted a still in the woods.
In a school election, A. E. Atchison and Dr. P. L. Etter were unopposed and re-elected. One spoiled ballot and a write-in for A. B. Baldrige occurred among 153 votes. Atchison 142, Etter 140. Supt. J. H. Peet re-elected for eighth year as head of Washington schools.
The March meeting at city hall will feature Charley Welsh soup as the club votes 25 cents per ticket to the kitchen fund. New officers Ralph Scott Dick Johnson Vern Crull and Frank Kos take positions and committees will call on members for ticket counts. Mr and Mrs Fred Deuel of Moline visited his ill mother Mrs Charles Deuel who is reported better.
Iowa officials lifted most restrictions on 32 percent of banks deemed more than half liquid including the Washington bank. Officials said the move allows normal deposits and checks while authorities may restrict large cash withdrawals to deter hoarding. Hoarders bring in about 30000 in gold and currency to post offices and banks.

The Commerce Department reports Austrian cigar makers introduced a new two cent cigar with about 0.08 percent nicotine and described as a light mild smoke to stimulate sales.
