About 35,387 Iowans have pledged their eyes after death to the Iowa Lions Eye Bank at the University of Iowa Hospitals. Washington County residents are among the signers, with Johnson County leading the area at 1,912 pledges and Jefferson 402, Henry 277, Keokuk 167, Louisa 125.
The Washington Lions Club sponsors a pledge day to boost Iowa Eye Bank support. Adults 18 plus may pledge eyes for cornea transplants at the county assessor’s office 6 30 to 9 p m or by calling 6536541 or 6536542. Eye Bank Month notes that 1011 transplants have been done from Iowa Eye Bank donations.

A Philadelphia man fatally shot his 1-year-old daughter Denise Stevenson while searching for an intruder in the basement of his home. Police said Denise, who missed her school bus, went downstairs after returning home for bus fare. Her father Donald, a bus driver, fired after seeing movement in a dark corner.
The Washington County Hospital Board approved a 15-cent per hour base raise for all employees after an executive session. The vote 6-1 included a dissent by Trustee Stephen Viggers who tried to exclude the administrator and two supervisors. The raise costs an estimated $37,000 and the board will absorb the expense without rate hikes. The panel also approved six smoke detectors, discussed relocating the Problem Drinking Center, and reviewed new monitoring equipment for cardiac training. February produced 777 patient days, 13 births, and net losses of $3,578 for the acute facility and $841 for LTC, totaling $3,003 year to date.
A chartered Convair carrying 35 people including ABC TV Primal Man film crew crashed into Poleta Ridge in Inyo National Forest near Bishop. The twin engine plane exploded, with a Forest Service helicopter reporting no survivors minutes after impact at about 7000 feet.
The Iowa Senate voted 27 to 22 to set a straight 15 per cent cap on installment loan finance charges, dropping the proposed 30 per cent ceiling for small balances. Proponents argued against high rates, while opponents warned retailers would not profit, and debate continued on the Unified Consumer Credit Code with a motion expected to reconsider the 15 per cent provision.
Arab oil ministers meeting in Tripoli said a two month trial period would allow the United States to pursue a Syrian Israeli disengagement.
