A consignment of 20 Belgian stallions including sorrel and roan types has arrived at Holbert Importing Company barns in Iowa. The group was loaded at Antwerp on February 20 and marks the second importation in under five months.
Senate bill by Sen. John N. Calhoun would prohibit straw votes in Iowa. The measure makes taking or publishing straw votes a crime with fines from 1000 to 10000 dollars.
Mason City reports 17 year old Mason City Ray Booth of Klemme was wounded in a Wednesday shooting after police allege he attempted to steal an automobile on the Lloyd Ulrichs farm. Booth had been paroled from the Eldora state training school for boys.
Edward Lewis Goff, divisional freight agent for the Rock Island railroad, died in his Davenport apartment after a four week illness. He had worked in railroading since age sixteen, and was a well known figure in the local railroad community.
Davenport Frank Krotz aged 35 died after a run away car rolled down Brady street hill and struck him. The vehicle jumped the curb crushed him between the car and a pole and he died at 4 a.m. today.
Davenport Wanda Benadom nine daughter of Dr and Mrs W A Benadom died from internal injuries after being struck by an automobile while crossing Locust street on her way home from school.
Tripoli local man Fred Kuhrt was knocked down three times by his car after it slipped into gear while he worked on the engine. The auto dragged him as it rolled in circles across the street and into a neighbor’s yard before he was finally pinned under it and left critically injured.
In Council Bluffs Lawrence Allen shot his 15 year old son after he disobeyed orders by visiting neighbor Richard Garrett 23 Negro. Garrett was taken to a hospital with a shotgun wound to the right arm and doctors warned the elbow could be amputated.
Flax seeding will increase across southern Iowa this spring, with more acres planted than in prior seasons. The shift follows early pioneer farming, soil turning, and the effect of crop diseases and chinch bugs prompting farmers to favor flax as an initial crop in newly prepared ground.
James Thorne of Laverne Indiana was held on five thousand dollars bond in Algona after allegedly taking part in an attack on Charles Laws. Laws says after a drinking party others struck him with a hammer and poured kerosene on him threatening to set him ablaze. Laws lost consciousness following the threat.
The Iowa Highway Commission announces open bids March 26 for No. 22 surfacing projects in Keokuk and Washington counties. Kalona to Riverside seven miles and 13.58 miles from South English to Wellman will receive crushed rock or gravel surfacing. A 6.29 mile stretch from Lone Tree west to No. 161 is also bid, with about two miles in Washington county east of Graf. Two miles from Riverside east to No. 161 are paved.
Iowa highway commission announces bids to be opened March 26 for road surfacing projects covering about 75 miles in 19 counties. One paving job on primary No. 10 Edgewood 0.87 miles and 2.68 miles grading near Tipton. Contracts for bridges, culverts, and gravel and bituminous surface work across multiple counties noted.

Leo Kennedy of Burlington is the new clerk at De Wit's grocery. He has four years at the Danville combined grocery and post office. He organized a young men's chorus in Danville and sang in churches within 60 miles with three radio broadcasts. He plans to sing in Washington soon and has been secretary-treasurer of the chorus since 19 It is a non denominational group. He attends the Evangelical church of Burlington and is a Burlington High School graduate. He lives with Mrs. W. A. Gibson at 302 South Iowa Avenue. He is unmarried and prefers small town life to a larger one.
Junior college Spanish club invites all local clubs to an illustrated South America lecture by Dr Edwin K Mapes of the University of Iowa. He will discuss manuscripts photographed during his South American travels and note studies in Paris Madrid and Porte. Musical numbers and a dinner at six precede the program.
The county corn hog office reports $39,000 in checks due with $17,000 received and $15,000 more expected this week. An additional $2,000 in delayed checks from a prior allotment arrived, and the committee hopes the remaining $30,000 will arrive soon.
The final season debate event for Washington high schools is the Iowa Nine tournament in Iowa City tomorrow and Saturday. Coach J. A. Taylor will field two teams: Affirmative Catherine Masson and Charlee Bear. Negative Dary Fetters and Rachel Johnston. The topic is federal grants to equalize educational opportunities across states for elementary and secondary education.
A bizarre garfish, without any sockets for them, was caught in the Cumberland River near Nashville by Luther Parchman. The unusual catch drew attention from locals and marked a rare freshwater fish sighting in the area.
Des Moines March 14 Governor Clyde L Herring outlined the possibility of an early adjournment and a special session this summer if Congress delays social security legislation Iowa would need to act to align state relief laws with a federal program. If Congress delays, the Iowa Assembly may adjourn next month and reconvene in June to follow a definite national plan.
Des Moines reports state stores and permits sold liquor in February totaling about 470 thousand dollars. The state liquor control commission announced the figure on Wednesday.
Blair Sagers and Harold Nissen, former Maquoketa juniors, open a shoe store in Washington after stints in Montezuma. Sagers is Maquoketa high school graduate. Nissen is Elwood high school graduate. Both are single and reside at the Colenso hotel. they attend Methodist services.
Washington March 14 The department of agriculture appropriations bill reported to the house includes 2 500 000 for chinch bug control and states the AAA will spend 700 000 000 during the fiscal year starting July 1. The bill lists 122 113 878 for regular department activities and notes 570 452 596 will be spent for AAA benefits from automatic appropriations. Road construction funded at 148 000 000 under federal aid with state matches.
Navy recruiter A. M. Powell will be in Washington on Friday March 2 at the post office from 10 a m to 2 p m to take navy enlistment applications. Eligible youths are 17 to 25 years old, of good character physically fit unmarried and with no dependents. Several trades are open to enlistees.
State income tax auditor L W Lynch of the income tax division will tour Riverside Kalona Wellman and Washington in March to answer questions about the new tax law. The last visit before the April 1 filing due date includes events at Riverside Bank March 20 Kalona Town Hall March 2 Wellman Bank March 22 and Washington Courthouse sheriff the outer room March 25 and 26.
A Cedar Rapids man, Glen White of Oelwein, died after a car driven by Al len C. Zell of Oelwein plunged through a guard rail on highway 161 south of here. White suffered a fractured thigh and internal injuries and died in a local hospital.
Cedar Rapids financier W. R. Boyd told a legislative investigating committee that the sale of 6 629 401 70 in stamped warrants to the Carlton D Beh Co was purely a business transaction. He said dealings with the Beh company were very satisfactory.

Mock court trials were held last night at United Presbyterian Methodist and Presbyterian churches as part of a statewide loyalty crusade. Mrs Lotta Spendthrift was sentenced for budgeting her time and finances to boost church involvement. Ralph Livingston served as judge with a town lineup of attorneys witnesses and clerks.
Des Moines March 14 The Iowa legislature sent to Washington an appeal for immediate payment of the soldiers bonus as the senate adopted a house concurrent resolution memorializing Congress. The measure avoids inflation provisions of the Patman bill now before Congress. The house passed seven bills before noon and the senate three.
A. H. Avery filed a resolution to abolish new corporations and renewals of charters. It calls for a six member joint committee to draft a bill prohibiting organization of new corporations and requiring foreign firms to cut retail outlets to a fixed ratio over ten years, ending April 1 1945.
Judge D W Hamilton adjourned district court to April 1 for non jury trial start with jury actions set for April 15. Grand jury finished its term and was excused with no bill against L R Bates. Hamilton to preside at Adel next week and Newton on murder case from Sigourney.
