A Des Moines column reports Sen. Paul W. Schmidt of Iowa City filed a bill in the state senate to legalize boxing. The measure would set up an athletic commission to regulate professional contests in the state.
Burlington announces daily bus service between Chicago and Los Angeles. Westbound trips start March 17 and eastbound on March 20, operated by Burlington Transportation Company, a subsidiary of Burlington Railroad.
Burlington Mayor E. Marquardt warned the city council to adopt an ordinance for meters or impose city price controls. The bid for reform faded, but the taxi price war persists with a 15 cent street service rate still in effect.
Des Moines police mobilized all resources to hunt two bandits who shot Police Captain S T Howard as he left a beer tavern March 2. Howard died after a hospital stay following a chest wound to the right lung.
Construction of Iowa City's $516000 sewage disposal plant will begin within two weeks after officials gave final assurance the project will proceed.

Davenport resident Frank Kratz suffered a crushed leg and probable internal injuries when a driverless car rolled downhill, leaped a curb, and struck him near a streetcar stop. He was taken to St Luke's hospital after the crash, as bystander Benny Alter looked on. The condition is listed as very serious.

Havana reports the Cuban army maintains control as a general strike shows signs of breaking. Officials say most workers expect to return by Friday, while strike leaders vow the action will last longer. A fortress cannon at nine fired a curfew signal, described as the strictest since colonial days.
Des Moines prepares to honor 13 year old Clarence Stetfen of Oelwein for saving Rose Marie Boyle 8 from a freight train. Stetfen arrived in Des Moines Tuesday to receive recognition for his quick actions amid the perilous incident.

Dr. John Demar of Des Moines will become commerce counsel on the Railway Commissioners Board, replacing J. H. Henderson.
V F W members traveled to Crawfordville for the American Legion meeting with 22 in attendance. Milo Steele Daryl Mathers Bill Brown Dale Atkinson and Clayton Neiswanger furnished cars and joined Commander Barham in welcoming the visitors. The Crawfordsville Legion hall upstairs is spacious and well used. A veterans lunch was served and several more trips are planned.
Byron Roberts longtime Lamoni city councilman and high school math teacher died Tuesday from pneumonia. He served as counselor to the bishop of the Reorganized Latter Day Saints church in the Lamoni stake.
Washington county refinanced primary road bonds at a lower interest rate of two and a half percent. Halsey Stuart & Co. of Chicago bought the bonds for a premium, with a projected annual saving of 10 212.50. The sale, led by County Treasurer Marion S. George, included bidders from Iowa and Des Moines, and funds come from motor vehicle and gasoline taxes.
A Douglas monoplane operated by a robotic pilot and several U S Army volunteers drafted by the commerce department completed a three hour test hop over the Pacific returning to Oakland. The flight’s purpose remained undisclosed and initial plans suggested a Honolulu flight.
Federal Meteorologist Charles D. Reed reports winter wheat rye and meadows showing life and little damage from winter weather. Current conditions are described as ideal for crops in Des Moines.

W S Triggs of 510 Market Street Sioux City Iowa invites labor or unemployed groups to contact him about organizing a chapter of the Iowa Labor Association a state wide organization devoted to protecting the unemployed and other labor groups not tied to existing state bodies.
Columbus Junction students take two firsts and a second at the sub district declamatory contest held at Washington High School. Billy Cox of Washington wins first in humorous, with Columbus Junction narrowly missing a sweep. Other winners include Robert Reauey and Ruth Weber, plus Keith Harris and Helen Arnold, with musical interludes by a local quartet and Virginia Davis soprano.
The Daily Vacation Bible School Institute will be held all day Friday at the Methodist church for people from across the county. Two pastors from outside will bring their own lunch and provide coffee for others. Dr and Mrs Ralph H Collis of Charles City will conduct the school for the state council of Christian education.

Keota voters cast forty nine ballots in a Monday election. Mrs. H. K. Stewart was reelected for three years and W. C. Richardson, editor of the Keota Eagle, won the seat to succeed F. A. Klein who declined another term after eleven years on the board including three as president.
In Wellman on March 13 the school board re elected president Lloyd Durst and A Gingerich to three year terms with no opposition. A single ban and twelve votes were cast in the election. The first meeting will be held next Monday night.
In Riverside on Monday March 13 a quiet school election produced a single ticket. John Soukup won a three year term to the school board and C. B. Cummings won a two year term. H. E B. Doud was elected treasurer.
In Richmond on March 13 Mandy Charlea Votruba and Fred Ch lupa were re elected as school directors for another three year term.
