A column notes Iowa Senate debate over a proposal to require all for hire trucks to get a certificate of convenience and necessity from the state commerce commission. Senator J Kendall Lynes seeks to attach an older truck bill rider, but action is postponed.
Sioux City detectives report seven neglect cases near starvation as mayor Loepp hands the matter to welfare authorities. The probe follows the slaying of 5-year-old Gordon Ardell Harris by Arthur Levering, with the boy's mother Violet Starris.
George Eckmann, a Davenport grocer and veteran, died at his store where his father opened the business in 1868. Eckmann, acclaimed three years ago by a national grocers association as the oldest grocer, ran the old general store with a candy box for every child visitor. He helped his father until 1914 when he took over management.
Elizabeth McKinley, 25, of Sioux City, said she was thrown from a vehicle near Highway 7 at the north city limits and suffered cuts and shock. She had been in the area about two weeks from Denver, Colorado. Fred O'Rbrayn, a farmer, found her in a ditch and notified Sheriff W. Rk. Tice.
Workers at Roach and Musser Co. in Muscatine went on a general strike affecting over four hundred employees. The AFL carpenters local voted last night for a wage increase averaging fifteen percent and union regulated standards of employment.
Harry B. Swan 47 of Atlantic, longtime Republican state central committee chairman, died when his car skidded on slick pavement near Stuart and collided with another vehicle. Attorney Boyd Cambridge injured seriously. Swan had been a leading GOP figure and planned to attend a national committee meeting in Washington. He also served as Atlantic city councilman. He survived by his widow and a brother in Wisconsin.
Maude Margaret Lyman Schmoeller died at Washington county hospital after a major January operation. She was born in Peoria in 1879, taught in Delavan, married Albert B. Schmoeller in 1895, and moved to Washington in 1910. She served in Presbyterian church activities, Pythian Sisters, Woman's Relief Corps, Rebekah lodge, and Fortnightly Club and is survived by husband, daughter Lucille Anderson, son James, three grandchildren, two sisters, and a brother. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at L. A. Jones Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Elm Grove cemetery.
Judge P. J. Siegers completed two days of court in Washington and returned to Newton yesterday. He plans to return next Monday when two non jury cases are assigned for trial in the county district court.
Iowa City reports Dr. John M. Caus and Dr. Gaus addressing about 60 farmers on postwar world order. They urge a just peace including Japan and France, potential tariff changes, and how to handle postwar rehabilitation and open immigration. Agriculture experts discuss wartime losses, exports, and differing views on postwar markets and peace.
A. W. Motley of Washington pleaded guilty to reckless driving before Justice of the Peace J. Ek. Bovee and was fined 50 dollars or 30 days in jail. He faced a collision east of town on February 17 that injured four people and left Motley with a severely broken jaw. Motley was bound over on operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, but no indictment was returned by the grand jury.
Leo Birka of Riverside was arrested by Sheriff H. M. Putnam on a forgery warrant. He was brought to Washington for a justice of the peace hearing this afternoon. The charge stems from an $18 check used to buy goods from Sorrell auto parts, purportedly signed by W. C. Leeney of Riverside.
The House Appropriations Committee recommended 3.415 billion dollars for the Navy for the new fiscal year starting July 1. About half funds 729 warships from battleships to patrol boats, plus 31 million in contractual authority for defense production. Secretary Knox said production would ramp to meet needs for Britain and the U.S. unless strikes delay work. Chairman Vinson warned strikes waste labor, urging defense industry curbs. Roosevelt called Perkins Knudsen and Hillman to advance a new defense labor mediation mechanism.
county AAA officials report increased farmer interest in the 1941 AAA program after a series of 14 discussions held at Valley school Dutch Creek Brighton city hall and No 11 school Washington township. 574 people attended averaging 41 per meeting despite bad weather. organizers foresee greater participation this year and many first time participants pledging cooperation.
Des Moines March 13 The Iowa Senate adopted a house concurrent resolution memorializing Congress to reapportion congressional districts by citizen population rather than total population. Senator Claire A. Dewey Republican of Washington introduced the measure to prevent Iowa from losing a seat.
A vocal program directed by Boyd White will be held at 8 o clock in the high school auditorium. Admission is free for the public. The program features girls sextets with pieces including Teach Me to Pray Love Is the Wind In the Hush of the Afternoon and Peter Pan, triads of solos by Eleanor Tucker Doris Gray Wanda Pence Nan Hoover and others, and two boys quartets with Passing By Dedication and Climb Up Chillum Climb.
Donald Schlabaugh of Wellman and Sanford Bowersox of Brighton boarded a Burlington Trailways bus for Des Moines for a year of Army training. They were October 1940 registrants. A late departure marked the send off with Selective Service board members and friends present. One man to be replaced after army headquarters rejection. two more replacements to come for Leo Walsh Riverside and Arthur Allen Kalona who were sent to Fort Des Moines but rejected for physical defects.
Willis Booth and Merle Booth lead a recital featuring Douglas Dowell on bass solos Spanish Gold and I Am Fate, John Rothlisberger performing Shipmates of Mine and Where ere You Walk, Robert Bontrager Dana Ken-ton Breidenthal on tenor pieces Brown Bird and When I Have Sung My Song, and bill Maas delivering Courage with Max Darnel Kashmiri Song.
British ground and air defenses repelled a major German air raid on Liverpool and northwest England, fending off 200 planes. Simultaneously Britain launched its largest wartime offensive, striking Germany, Norway, Holland, Belgium and France while continuing the invasion coast bombing. A Greek communique said the Greek destroyer Parsa sank an Italian submarine in the Aegean and hinted at a British convoy. Mussolini was said to be in Albania directing operations as Italians reportedly gained little ground.
Riverside public schools Superintendent Robert Smola, soon leaving the county for Battle Creek Mich, was the target of a surprise party by Washington county town superintendents and their families. They gathered at his home with dinner baskets and shared a fine meal. Attending were H E Ross H V Snodgrass E R Butterworth J L Calkins H C Messer W C Raffteisher and Lester B Krabill. Des Moines March 13 report from the Iowa Department of Public Safety shows 32 highway fatalities in February, down from February 1940. Motor vehicle crashes caused 9 deaths, pedestrians 8, non collision causes 7, train vehicle and fixed object crashes 4 each, and non traffic deaths 2. The main drop came from motor vehicle collisions with 6 fewer deaths than a year earlier.
