Engineer McGugin, longtime Rock Island railroader now on the Knoxville Branch, maintains a 155 mile daily round trip despite two recorded collisions in 1878 and 1898. He rose from fireman to engineer, residing in Washington for 23 years and earning a reputation for steadiness.
Six year old Perry Bullars from Oskaloosa was found at his grandmother’s home in What Cheer. He reportedly rode the Narrow Gauge to Stark Station then continued on the North Western to reach the relative’s house.
The Muscatine dynamite case jury, after nearly 24 hours out, stood five for acquittal and seven for conviction. The jury returned no verdict and another trial is anticipated.
Chas. E. Blaney's Baggage Check company met a large crowd at the Graham for a return engagement. The troupe presented an artists’ program with a traveling theater party among the parquet seats. The previous Kaokuk stop drew 122 milliners and the act was described as a fine specialty company.

Today W Shanafelt purchased S H Gaston's share in the Shanafelt Gaston lumber yard with Gaston remaining in Des Moines. Shanafelt's son in law J W Smith will move to take a one fourth stake, and will give his remaining fourth to his son Clarence. The firm, over one year old, has many warm friends and prospects for success. Mr and Mrs Clapp of Fairfield visited last evening staying with Rev and Mrs Thorn. Editor Wolf and Will Manners of the Crawfordsville Imprint attended Baggage Check last night.
Forecast for Iowa calls for increasing clouds and warmer tonight with Saturday snow. In Washington a mischief incident led to a school closure yesterday. The Academy board read resolutions suspending ten popular boys for vandalism and chair removal, with apologies required before rejoining.
The Lt O O F lodge held an evening gathering in their lodge rooms featuring initiatory degree work. After the ceremony, refreshments were served by Neiswanger & Sons as they welcomed outside lodges from Columbus City Columbus Junction Crawfordsville Brighton Dublin Eldon Colfax Cameron Mo Richland Winfield and Kalona.
A March 9 1896 letter from Galesburg by G. D. Crocker and A. Dean to Washington Pipe Organ Co. attests to the First Methodist Episcopal Church organ a three manual forty stop instrument praised for tone finish and workmanship. It invites comparison with organs by Farrand Votey Johnson Sons and others, asserting superiority in tone and craft. Nearby notices report local arrivals departures and visits, including J J Weldin in Crawfordsville and Rev Williamson’s sermon in Keokuk.
