The Washington High School concert band performs tonight at 8 in the school gym. The 76 member group plays Walt Disney Overture Charter Oak Zachiah Blue Mist and other selections with guest conductor Cal Shanks and Sequoia a tone poem. The concert is free and open to all. the next concert is set for May 16.
Senator Forrest Schwengels and Representative Keith Dunton will visit the Farm Bureau office in Washington on Saturday afternoon March 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. They seek to meet Washington County residents to discuss current legislative issues.
The Woodward-Granger High School jazz band directed by Tom Wehr won first at the Washington Jazz Festival held Saturday. Hannibal Missouri and Mt. Pleasant groups took second and third. A large crowd attended the evening concert featuring the Washington Jazz Band and guest artist Don Rader.
The Washington Lions Club marks its first anniversary by hosting Eye Pledge Day this Thursday from 6 30 to 9 p m at the county assessor's office. Adults may pledge eye donation to aid vision restoration. Lions assist with pledge cards or callers can leave name and address for follow up. National Eye Bank Month notes corneal transplants rising in 1973. Dr F C Bloch of University Hospitals comments on transplant success.
Duane K. Miller of Wellman was elected president of the Washington County Pork Producers Association at a Monday night executive board meeting. He succeeds Bob Bonar of Washington. New officers include Dale Thompson Riverside vice president Bob Greiner Keota secretary and Bob Carter Kalona treasurer. Directors named Jim Witthoft Washington John Skubal Ainsworth Jim Barnes Brighton Charles Twinam Crawfordsville Orlen Reschly Keota. Retiring directors are Bonar Bob Johnson Washington and Marlin Owens Columbus Junction.
A young Japanese man hijacked a JAL Boeing 747 with 429 people aboard demanding 55 million dollars. After seven hours police, disguised as porters, captured him at Naha Okinawa, freeing all passengers and crew. Four Americans among those released. The incident marked the largest hijacking by number of people.
A joint appropriations subcommittee signaled possible postponement of funding for Iowa State University’s proposed meat research laboratory until the 1975 session. The debate centered on the $2.8 million request to construct and equip the facility amid questions over size estimates and cost projections.
Rep. Robert Krause charges Gov. Ray and Commerce Commission chairman Maurice Van Nostrand with gutting Iowa rail safety. He says the state track inspector post was left vacant, then filled unreliably, and a DOT rail inspection bill died on party lines.
Rep Wilbur D Mills, returning from back surgery, refused to soften his stance on President Nixon resigning. Mills said a forthcoming congressional tax report would push Nixon to resign more than any Watergate disclosures, while denying he accused Nixon of fraud.

Democrats James Schaben Gene Kennedy Coleman Doderer Glenn Gluba Hill Jenkins Rodgers Willits remain in the mix with several undecideds.
Des Moines Iowa Gov Robert D Ray urged the legislature to set a fixed ceiling on interest rates for revolving charge accounts and oppose floating rates He argued competition among retailers would not reliably keep rates affordable and that a ceiling is needed even if it limits rates to about 12 15 or 18 percent The Senate committee sent the bill to the floor with no recommendation and Ray said the old law was too restrictive harming consumers
A forecast indicates decreasing cloudiness this afternoon with highs in the low 40s. Tonight will be clear and a bit colder with overnight lows in the upper 20s. Wednesday should be fair and warmer with highs near 50 as northeast to north winds 15 to 20 mph diminish.
