Lero Weather Fails to Halt Prize Winners

The Washington contest opened in freezing temps with a strong turnout. Wilma Mae Nichols won first with a perfect entry at 7 18 p m, while Mrs G A Reinert and Mrs L G Sutherland took second and third. Prizes included cash and gifts from local merchants awarded to thirty winners. entries collected at various stores and the Evening Journal office.

Father Didn’t Bother shines in small town high school play

The Y’s Men’s audience enjoyed a semi comedic evening as the high school stage presented Father Didn’t Bother. Performances by Danny Brindley the 12 year old skating enthusiast and Muriel Rider as the aunt drew praise along with Wendell Rider’s jovial Wolfe father.

Approval Board Outlines 1948 County Road Plan

Washington county board of supervisors and fifteen township trustees approved a 1948 county road program costing 130000 plus for 28 projects. Major items include Subal road High End 8.20 miles 12208 and Lord road Oregon 3.25 miles 11297. Other listed roads span multiple townships with varied lengths and costs, totaling the approved plan and were filed with county engineer W P Rawn.

Fire Victims Fund Reaches Over Four Thousand Dollars

In Columbus Junction area the Ellsworth Waterhose family of Prairie Grove, once local residents, lost their home and seven of twelve children in a fatal fire. The Des Moines county Red Cross reports funds exceeding $4,000 raised by volunteers in the Burlington region. A revised committee, led by District Judge FE. O. Newell of Burlington, now administers the aid.

Farmers Told Price Break Might Come

Iowa State College publication Iowa Farm Science notes in its March issue that the February commodity price dip may reflect a general shift toward pre war price relationships. It urges farmers to monitor consumer demand business investments government buying and net exports as clues to when a downturn in the price level will occur.

Washington woman pleads guilty to assault and battery

Mrs. T A Jones of Washington pleaded guilty before Justice E D Rayburn after a charge of assault and battery filed by Virginia Derby. She paid a five dollar fine plus costs yesterday afternoon.

Farm Bureau Meet to Feature Soil Conservation Film

Don Maxwell, township director of the Washington township Farm Bureau, announced a meeting at the YWCA Thursday evening March 18 at eight. The program will include a film titled Soil Conservation in the United States.

County Republicans Name Delegates To State Meet

In Washington County the Republican convention named delegates to the state convention in Des Moines and formed a resolution committee. Delegates include T. B. Bailey Mary Beges Mrs. Howard Anderson and 18 others. Resolutions urged non intervention in foreign aid and the ending of wartime controls while supporting reduced government expenses and debt.

Funeral plans for Mugen Lewis 82 of Columbus Junction

Funeral services for Mugen Lewis 82 of Columbus Junction will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Richie funeral home with burial in Columbus City cemetery. Rev. J B Pooley will conduct the rites. Lewis died at 8:15 a.m. Thursday at Bellevue hospital in Muscatine. Born in Ontario Canada on July 12 1865 he came to this area as a young man. He married Ida May Phillips of Columbus City May 26 1888. The couple lived in Muscatine county before settling in Columbus Junction in 1915. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Weed Control Forum Planned at Local High School

Victor Weirs a Sherwin Williams entomology weed specialist will speak Monday night March 14 at the high school on spraying to control corn borers and weeds. Keirns has led research with agricultural colleges across the corn belt. A short film will illustrate the talk followed by a discussion for questions from attendees including four farm veteran classes.

Louisa County Girl Is Severely Burned

Sharon Richardson three year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Clayton Richardson of Columbus Junction sustained severe burns after stepping backward into a receptacle of hot water. She was hospitalized in University hospital Town City in critical condition on Tuesday.

Plans Set for County Legion Meet in Washington County

Jesse D Lewis county adjutant announces a county wide Legion gathering to be held in Riverside Tuesday eight o clock evening March 1 with county commander Jon Smith in attendance. March 12 in Jerusalem the British North Palestine command says a 50 000 strong well trained police force is needed to keep peace as Arabs and Jews clash. Maj. Gen. H. C. Stockwell warns without an armed force to disarm both sides bloodshed will surge after British withdrawal.

Esther Geerdes Places Second in Legion Oratorical

Esther Geerdes, a Washington high school student and local American Legion oratorical winner, placed second in the district contest held Tuesday evening in Morning Sun. Judges gave her one first and two second ratings for her speech "The Constitution-It's History" while the winner, a Burlington youth, earned two firsts and one second.

Dr Marcus Bach to Speak at Union Service Sunday

Dr Marcus Bach of the University of Iowa will be the speaker at the Union evening service at United Presbyterian Church on Sunday March 14. Pastor Dr George Kerr announced Bach’s on leave from the university to finish a book on the history of Protestantism. The service includes choir numbers and high school band solos with participation from cooperating churches.
