Preliminary findings of the ordnance department safety board point to vigorous manual operation of a valve controlling TNT flow as the likely cause of the March 4 explosion at the Iowa ordnance plant. No evidence of sabotage has been found.
Des Moines reports Karl G. Miller repaid 35 dollars to Iowa for special nomination papers, a dispute connected to obtaining 5 000 individual papers via the state printing superintendent to place his name on the Republican primary ballot for governor. Miller’s office had standard nomination blanks available.
The Toledo, Peoria and Western railroad serving Keokuk remains in labor dispute after president George P. McNear Jr refused a War Labor Board mediation order. A two month strike of 104 workers began December 28 over working conditions, with fresh violence reported in Peoria yards.
County Attorney Roy Smith said court action on a dog racing track's summer operation is not expected until after the June term. Injunctions were filed by Joe W. True of Avoca. Smith's office will prosecute but has not prepared for presentation at the March term.
Des Moines Municipal Judge Ralph L Powers set 10 am Saturday for a motion to reopen his action on how to hear ouster charges against Charles R Fischer insurance commissioner The motion seeks correction of the Feb 20 ruling granting Wolf a review of the council 3 to 2 vote giving Gov George A Wilson sole power to recommend Fischer ouster It asks the judge to issue a writ of certiorari based on the reasons he denied the writ previously while finding any removal method valid
The WPA will discontinue all projects by March 28 except the school hot lunch program. Stephen B. Jones, welfare director, says the move helps farm laborers find work in town or rural districts. The County Board of Supervisors approved the plan to release workers for new employment opportunities.
Final approval given for a spring CPT course at Washington Airport and Junior College with ten slots. Fourteen applicants, ten selected after physicals. instructor John Zlatohlavek to lead, Katherine Sauerberg to replace Dean Mead, and Meads duties reassigned for Navy school work.
The War Department said the Civil Aeronautics Administration training program will more than double in size and shift facilities entirely to support the war effort under a plan with the Army Air Forces.
Mohandas Gandhi plans a Wardha meeting with the All-India Congress working committee to discuss Churchill's Indian policy statement. Meanwhile Cripps mission details are not officially commented, and the Moslem League led by Jinnah will review the Churchill statement at a March 25 special meeting.
Robert D. Blue, Republican candidate for lieutenant governor and speaker of the Iowa house, visited Washington County today with Everett L. Stewart. They were guests at the Washington Coffee club where Blue was elected club president for the day. Blue, a Fagle Grove attorney and 150 acre farmer, veteran of World War I, has served in four state legislatures.
Rev Charles Leaming of Waterloo told Ottumwa listeners the need for prayer repentance and confession of national sins to ensure victory. He cited Lieut Com Gene Tunney saying victory requires opposing Japanese fanaticism with greater resolve. He added that both fanatical foes are backed by Satan.
The plan envisions expanding present CAA facilities to train 45 000 elementary flying students yearly and 20 000 in a secondary course, up from current 25 000 and 10 000. It also calls for 31 900 ground technicians annually, a previously untrained group. First priority goes to those meeting Army aviation cadet requirements who must join the all corps enlisted reserve.
Chicago March 22 The International Harvester company unveils a nationwide program to train farm women and girls as trac torettes capable of running farm machinery. Fowler McCormick Harvester president asks 6,500 dealers to start free classes for willing women to report for training in over all and not afraid to get dirty. The program requires eight classes with possible expansion to 12 or 16 lessons.
Foster of Henry county announces his bid for state senate to represent Washington and Henry counties. He spent time in Washington meeting Republican voters and would be the sole candidate, breaking the usual alternation with Dewey of Washington. Foster has served three terms in the Iowa House from Henry and owns a Washington county farm once known as the Joe Moorhead place.
Funeral services for Pleasant McCart, 81, will be held Sunday afternoon at 1 30. He died this morning in a Des Moines hospital where he had been since February 8. Hoskins funeral home is in charge of arrangements and burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Washington announces a spring opening for Thursday evening next week with special store window displays by local merchants and band music if weather allows. The "Who Sells It" contest offers 15 to 25 prizes. items shown in windows may not be sold there. Stores open 7 30 to 9 30 p m to display spring merchandise for public convenience rather than business.
At a meeting of the American Legion executive committee in Solon Iowa the group discussed a conscientious objectors camp. The motion to reject disapprove and return the proposition to its source was adopted unanimously. The committee planned a spring and summer program for the post with all but two members present.
Brazil moves to confiscate a substantial portion of Axis assets held in Brazilian banks as retaliation for Axis torpedoings of Brazilian ships. Police units with tear gas and rifles faced angry crowds after Germans were attacked in several stores. President Vargas issued the decree citing attacks on property and loss of Brazilian lives. Four ships sunk and a fifth reported missing.
A marriage license was issued today at the court house to William Henry Crandall and Elsie Amlong, both residents of Washington.
The body is expected to be brought to Brighton this afternoon or tomorrow. Mr. McCart lived about four years in Brighton and spent the winter with his daughter in Des Moines. Surviving are his daughter Mrs. Imma Conroy, a grandson Ralph Davison, and a great granddaughter Martha Sue.
Washington county supervisors approved use of the annual farm to market funds for 10.5 miles of county roads in 1942. The Havre to Crawfordsville section covers six and a half miles and Dublin to the Keokuk county line four miles. Roads will be graded bridged and oiled, funded mainly from automobile license fees and gasoline taxes.
T. Reagan Adams of Kalona seeks the Republican nomination for state representative from Washington county. Adams asks the secretary of state for nomination papers as he runs alongside T. H. Huston. E. L. Stewart is not seeking the nomination. Adams, a Kalona attorney, has prior experience seeking the seat and is a local figure with strong county ties.
The Victory Book Campaign will close Saturday March 14 and asks residents to donate books for US service members. Books should be left at the YMCA from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. under committee chair Glen Mace with Mrs Homer Stephens as general chairman.
DES MOINES March 12 A A ir Traffic accidents in Iowa during 1941 caused 601 deaths the state department of public safety reported today There were 21 614 accidents reported and 11 373 persons were injured There were 13 915 accidents in which only property damage resulted One hundred twenty five deaths were caused by motor vehicles striking pedestrians.
County school heads from Washington towns gathered for a potluck dinner and program at West Chester led by Supt J L Calkins. Dr Kollman of Parsons College spoke. most superintendents attended with wives, except W B Wyllie of Riverside. Krabil announced plans for a seven state rural life conference at Cedar Falls in March 1921.
United Press dispatches report Allied and Axis fleets clashing for sea routes to Australia India and the Atlantic from America to Britain and Russia. Allied air raids claim 13 enemy transports and at least one warship in New Guinea and in the North Atlantic. British Indian and Chinese forces brace for large land actions as Japanese invasion attempts and maneuvering unfold. The Red Army reports a decisive victory near Kalinin with heavy German losses and breached defenses north west of Moscow.
The National Association of Manufacturers proposed an eight percent general sales tax to raise about 4.4 billion dollars in war revenues, split four percent on manufacturers and four percent on retail sales, or eight percent on retail alone. The plan accompanies cuts to non war spending and tax rate adjustments proposed to the Ways and Means Committee.
Des Moines born M L Bowman a former Black Hawk county state senator announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for secretary of agriculture He is the first Democrat to enter the race Bowman previously served as state supervisor of the farm debt adjustment program under Governor Clyde L Herring and was a professor of labor economics at Iowa State College
