Three Corning schoolgirls were injured and 20 pupils shaken when a bus veered into a ditch and rolled after driver Russell Booth tried to swat a honey bee. The crash occurred three miles north on Highway 148 as students returned from Corning. Deputy N A Magnusson reported the bus continued 130 feet before tipping.
Farm boys and girls who help with spring farm work may make up missed work but no broad plan to extend the school year exists. State official R. A. Griffin says make-up work eases farm labor shortages better than closing schools early. Many districts will skip the spring vacation to finish the year sooner.
Fire expert Harry K. Smoky Rogers told Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce that bombs are a real threat to the city and its surrounding area. He warned that enemy planes could drop thousands of fire bombs on vital war production zones in the upper Mississippi valley and that protection is lacking.
Cadet William Ewing of the Missouri Military Academy leaves for his annual spring furlough to Washington Iowa to visit his grandparents Mr and Mrs R K Pratt at 428 East Washington Street Ewing is in his second year of ROTC work and recently starred in a Dramateers stage production delivering an outstanding performance.
British naval planes carried out a torpedo attack on the Turpin, the sister ship of the sunken Bismarck, forcing the German warship toward the Norwegian coast under a smoke screen. Two British planes were lost. contact attempts by British ships failed. The action took place off Norway after Turpin departed Trondheim heading north.
Washington high school industrial arts instructor W F Bickel spoke to the Y’s Men about a navy backed program in which about 150 manual training students are building model airplanes to navy specs. Plans and materials are supplied, with titles for cadet air craftsman on successful completions.
Carl W. Danielson field supervisor for the Farm Credit Administration will be at the Farm Bureau office in Washington on March 16 from 10 30 to 3 to answer questions and process applications.
Earle Libe was appointed salvage director for Washington county under the civilian defense program. The role, created by the national defense organization, places Libe in charge of collecting scrap iron paper tin and other war materials for trade channels. Chairman E D Morrison Jr said Libe will recruit assistants later and lead the effort to aid the government’s war needs.

American army engineers and bulldozer crews push into the Canadian wilderness on a planned 1000 mile overland route to Alaska. The highway would link Alaska with the Midwest, supply western bases, and support potential offensives against Japan. Harold L. Ickes forecasts completion within a year.
Judge Frank Bechly of Montezuma opened the March term and left for Newton where he is presiding. He will return to Washington Monday March 23 to resume local court work with one non jury case set for that day and jury trials to begin March 24. An order of dismissal was entered in the Ola Cummings Rice versus O L Rice divorce with costs paid. Gardner and Lurians Co. versus A J Nichols and Helen Nichols shows settlement and costs paid.
The county rationing board plans a Saturday school of instruction for Washington county teachers who will supervise sugar rationing. Rationing supplies include 23 000 rationing books and 24 000 application forms with 24 000 instruction sets, plus 300 staff instruction sets yet to arrive.
President Roosevelt told Congress on the lend-lease anniversary that 2.57 billion dollars have been spent to arm and feed U S allies up to Feb 28, far short of what is needed to turn the tide toward victory. The outlay accounts for a portion of over 48 billion authorized for lend-lease aid, with more than half already shipped.
Rio de Janeiro March 11 Brazil was believed to be preparing to declare war against the Axis. President Vargas signed a measure giving him power to issue such a declaration for Brazil's defense. Brazilian shipping was ordered into near ports to protect them from submarine attacks.
March 28 is the tentative opening date for Spurgeons basement store manager Harold Johnson says. Contractors Albert Simpson Lyle Snyder Ralph Minick Carson plumbing and heating will complete heating changes and electrical work. Mrs Catherine Null will manage basement departments including curtain drapery bedding table linen and fancy work. E A Sandburg from Chicago will supervise rearranging and display during the week of March 23.
About fifty people filed for the rural route three mail carrier job at the Washington post office. A competitive exam will occur soon after the March 6 deadline. Women are among applicants. The vacancy followed Homer Brower’s death last year. The route covers over 66 miles.

Lawrence Miksch of Fort Sill serves in Battery F 32nd Battalion Eighth Regular Field Artillery Replacement Training School. The unit trains 250 men in flash and sound ranging to locate enemy artillery and direct friendly fire with new technical equipment and an eleven week course in flash ranging observation photojournalistic developing and meteorology.
Washington city and county police keep Paul Ochalek a former inmate of the Northern Wisconsin colony and training school after he appeared at city hall without registration. He said he lost his card, but records show a Wisconsin registration and three prior escapes since July. His home is Milwaukee. Iowa officials were asked about returning him to Wisconsin under an interstate agreement.
