Alpha Zeta national honorary agricultural society was suspended from Iowa State College by the college governing committee for an indefinite period. The action followed a series of pranks committed by pledges of the organization Thursday night.
Fred R. White chief engineer for the state highway commission told the legislature Iowa would purchase all 18 toll bridges spanning the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Bonds backed by toll revenues would finance the plan, and once retired the bridges would become toll free. Senator D D Fuller, chair of the senate group, said a decision would come in about ten days.
Joseph Martinek, executive secretary of the Czech National Council and former Prague editor, told Cedar Rapids authorities that Czech chemical works have long produced gas shipped to Germany. He cited Bohemian grapevine reports of an imminent invasion of the British Isles, claiming Nazis boast of two cards Hitler holds and that invading Ireland to base submarines is part of the strategy.
DES MOINES Iowa lawmakers halted a proposal for free rural library service as not handled in orthodox fashion. The bill, costing about a quarter of a million dollars annually, was sent to the appropriations committee per rule that bills with appropriations must pass through that panel.
Charles City justice of the peace Calvin H. Jones is jailed on charges of embezzling between 800 and 900 dollars. He is accused of cashing county warrants for almost two years as guardian of a minor and supporting the child for only ten weeks, with shortages alleged in fines he collected.
The Washington Concert League moves its 1941 42 membership drive toward completion. The goal is capacity of the high school auditorium, about 200 more members than last year, enabling a larger budget and possibly more concerts or pricier artists. Pledges are $2 50 for single memberships or $4 for two. those not previously called should contact campaign chair Mrs A E Baldrige this week.
In Ainsworth on March 11, 41 votes were cast. James Quinn won 41 votes and J B Pressly 29, with two write ins each getting one vote. Quinn was appointed last year to fill a term. Directors elected for three years include Pressly and Quinn. Other board members: Peter Koehler, Will Roberts, Lee Norris. Swartzendrauber, Munson, and Griffith received 157, 144, and 113 votes respectively, with Swartzendruber at 105. Durst and Gingerich retire. Other members: J G Wehrle, Franklin Lewis, Dr R W Wirtz. Board to meet March 17 to organize.
In Crawfordsville on March 11 the school board terms remain the same with members Cc. C. Moorhead Luther Williams Frank Gault Joseph H. Jones Howard Anderson and John Hamill. Moorhead and Williams won three-year terms with 38 and 42 votes. Clarence Fulton received 22 votes in a small election with 54 votes cast.
Only one ballot for the Riverside school board produced 38 votes. Ray Marner and John Soukup were re-elected with 86 votes each. Hubert I. Doud won the treasurer post for two years. Other board members include Mrs. Cecil Doud, Joseph Knebel, and Clair Switt.
At Chester EST CHESTER the school board results show Walter Bauer re elected to a three year term with 16 votes. George Freshwaters received one vote and Merle McDowell six. F IV Lindenmeyer serves as treasurer and Melvin Booth as secretary of the board.
At Kalona on March 11, a quiet school election produced only 29 votes. Present board members Dr. S C Ware and Frank Conklin were unopposed for re election. Other directors listed include Ivo Grady Everett Teets and Sam Yoder.
In Wellman on March 11, 262 votes were cast to elect two school board members. Two tickets competed, with Mearl Munson and Keith Adams opposing Floyd Griffith and Herman.
March 11 results give Roy Crossett 44 votes to Neal Whisler's 42 in Brighton school board race. Don Robison and Monte Beauchamp trailed with 31 and 41 votes respectively, on yesterday's ballot.
In Keota on March 11, 24 votes were cast from noon to seven for two unopposed candidates. W. C. Richardson and Mrs. Marguerite Stewart each received all votes. Voters included ten teachers, the janitor, five board members, and eight other residents, two with no children.
Ralph Wenger wins 85 votes to join the Wayland school board for three years, while Leonard Martin earns 87 votes for a one year term. A. A. Jackson is re elected secretary. Omar Roth receives 7 votes for three years and Tel Tschantz 76 votes for one year to fill the unexpired term of Dr. J. R. McKirahan. Present members Ter Henss Strooks and Amos Wyse were not up for election. Ralph Wenger succeeds his father J. G. Wenger, whose term expired.
Harold Orr and LeRoy Owens were elected as the new Cotter school board members, defeating incumbent Frank Hauenstein. Mrs. Arlene Jones was elected treasurer for a one year term.
R. O. Lynn won a three year term on the Columbus Independent School District board at Columbus Junction with 24 votes to 2 for James Hoben. One ballot was spoiled and Lynn’s name was the only one printed on the ballot.
United Mine Workers under John L. Lewis seeks a one dollar daily raise for 338,000 Appalachian soft coal workers as formal negotiations begin on a new two year wage hour contract across an eight state region.
Chairman Joseph O Mahoney of Wyoming urged Congress to convene a conference of business labor farm and consumer leaders akin to the 1787 constitutional convention. The aim is to draft a national economic constitution to abolish evils threatening the political system.
Carl W. Danielson Farm Credit Administration field supervisor will be at the Farm Bureau office Tuesday March 18 from 9 to 4 to handle 1941 crop loan applications. Farmers seeking funds for seed and tractor fuel should plan to meet him on that date.
Brown loses as Iowa supreme court unanimously upholds his dismissal as state superintendent of printing. The state printing board moves to name Leslie M. Shaw, Bedford publisher, as successor after Brown hired Frank Floorhead, ex Democratic publicity chief, to edit the Iowa official register. Brown, a World War II veteran, argued protection under the soldiers preference law, but the court overruled.
Seven new automobiles sold to Washington county residents were registered at the county treasurer’s office in the past week, boosting March licenses to 13. Total county plates reach 5,072 for 1941, up 133 from 1940, with 823 trucks licensed this year compared with 782 last year. Don Braden of the highway patrol warned Washington County residents that 1949 saw more highway accidents and fatalities than 1948. He urged better driver maintenance, discussed bicycle traffic, and promoted a model city ordinance requiring bicycle registration with a ten cent fee. He cited Iowa data of 417 bicycle crashes and 13 deaths, stressing parental cooperation to reduce hazards.
A heavy snowstorm in Des Moines and parts of Iowa caused drifting and restricted highway traffic. Northeastern Iowa reported seven to ten inches with Waukon seeing twelve to fourteen inches. Strong winds created deep drifts, though overall snowfall was not heavy. Forecasters expected colder tonight with possible flurries but no long lasting storm.
Mrs Charlotte Baldrige and Harry Ramseyer are elected to three year terms on the Washington independent school district board. Franklin Bostwick Jr fills one year of D F Barnes term. Six hundred votes cast with twenty one spoiled ballots. Ramseyer to continue, Bostwick and Baldrige to join board alongside incumbent Stewart and Atchison.
In a heated session today the Senate’s debate over a compulsory blood test bill for intoxication cases drew sharp opposition and requests for amendments. The chamber also moved toward four year terms for county officers, while discussions trimmed conservation costs and a repeal of a social security measure was noted as a prospect in the same day proceedings.
In Des Moines on March 11 the senate adopted a constitutional amendment to extend terms of elective state officers and county attorneys from two to four years. It then passed a bill to extend the four year term to county officers other than county attorneys, with a 4 to 4 vote.
The bill for compulsory blood tests in intoxication cases was attacked by Rep. Elmer Johnson Republican Cedar Rapids arguing it violates the constitution. After over two hours of debate the house adjourned without action. Johnson contended the proposal deprives individuals of due process rights.
The senate today adopted a conservation bill in Des Moines, marking approval of proposed environmental safeguards and funding changes. The action caps a lengthy debate and sets the stage for related committee work and potential amendments.
A conservation appropriation was trimmed from 175000 to 125000 after Senator Whitehill Republican of Marshalltown warned of dangers facing the country. He urged quick action now and said after the crisis is over the nation can protect its beauty spots.
Des Moines reports that a repeal of a social security measure is under consideration after federal guidance. The bill would tax unemployment compensation on the first $3000 of annual salaries. Governor Wilson was told by the social security board that the law should be re passed due to a passage technicality.

Two Illinois Central freight trains collided head on near Delaware. The wreck derailed seven freight cars and the locomotives but crew members escaped injury. Petit jurors to report next Monday if trials await.
