A column notes the start of Date Week at Parsons College in Fairfield with co-eds taking social and financial duties. Rigid rules govern the event and the week culminates in the Spinsters' Spree Friday night.
James Smith secretary of the state board reports six applicants passed the examinations for state mine inspector. The tests were held at the state mine inspector's office. Successful examinees include Everett A. Erskine Ottumwa Clifford Love Pershing Chester L. Strait Des Moines Dean Aubry Ottumwa Ray O. Phillip Des Moines and Frank Brunson Centerville.
In Dubuque a two month dispute pits the local Truck Drivers union against John Roshek department store over nonunion delivery linen. A cold day scene shows a young picket warming his hands as he walks with an unfair sign before receiving a pair of gloves from the store owner.
Mrs. H. A. Sodini, about 56, died at St Luke's hospital after being found in a dazed condition on a downtown street. Police said she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. About $200 in theater receipts given by her husband, manager of a local theater, were missing when found.
Dr. H F Jaques of Iowa Wesleyan College received a Founders Day honor in Mount Pleasant. The biology head for 28 years and a 32 year college teacher, he was celebrated by ninety guests including trustees faculty and Booster Club leaders for his science writings and extensive Iowa insect collection.
Clarence Cottrell, 20, inmate at Eldora state training school, died from hammer blows reportedly struck by fellow inmate Edward Keen, 19, during an argument in a truck shed at the school. Cottrell's funeral was set for East Bethel church near Albia. he was the son of J. C. and Mrs. Cottrell, farmers.
Des Moines leaders form The Eighteenth Amendment Rescue association to challenge the twenty first amendment. John B. Hammond says the group will push a test case to the U S Supreme Court alleging fraud in securing the repeal of the eighteenth.
The Republican state central committee fixed April 12 as the date to elect 22 delegates to the national convention. The convention venue was undecided amid strong bids from Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.
The Iowa Chiropractors Association met at Port Des Moines Hotel to honor Dr. Daniel Palmer on his birthday. Dr. W H McNichols said public interest in fighting infantile paralysis grew, but cautioned against costly cadder treatments, asserting chiropractic methods offer a viable alternative.
A Des Moines report details payments to lawyers tied to state bank receiverships. Louis Roddewig and Lehan Ryan are named among those paid substantial and minimal fees while R W Bates faces criticism for appointment as counsel. The audit covers 77 banks, cites weak supervision, and urges action by Attorney General Fred Everett.
A meeting of DeMolay officers from the southeastern Iowa district was held yesterday afternoon in the Masonic Temple. Representatives attended from Burlington Davenport Keokuk and Washington. Master councilor Tom Gray of Washington led the session and plans for the district conclave in Clinton on May 14 were outlined.
Washington will screen the complete four hour technicolor version of Gone With the Wind at the State theater for a week starting April 5. Starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, the film will run three daily showings except Sundays with two. mornings at 10, 2:15, and 7:45 evenings. Reserved seats will apply for evening and Sunday shows.
Henry county American Legion commander Dr. Tom McCabe of Mt. Pleasant invites Washington Legion members to attend the Legion meeting at Wayland on Tuesday evening.
The county health unit urges caution during respiratory infections as pneumonia cases rise. Hospital lab data show five pneumonia cases in the first week of March versus one in February and eight in January. Early signs include chest pain chills fever cough blood-tinged sputum nausea and vomiting. Sputum typing should begin as soon as symptoms start, said D C Barrett health unit director. Serums are used selectively based on hospital and public health lab microscopic exams.
Funeral services were held in Pittsburg Kansas for Edward Patterson about 44 found dead in his car Thursday. He was a former Washington resident, grandson of A H Patterson, and a democratic politician who once represented his district in Congress. Survived by wife, two children, sister, all of Pittsburg. He had family ties to Crawfordville and Ainsworth communities.
Bethel Presbyterian Church northeast of Washington will hold its annual congregational meeting on Wednesday March 123 in the church. A fellowship dinner at noon precedes the business session with reports from officers and the pastor. Election of officers for the new year begins April first. Church members urged to attend for updates on church work. The congregation improved the property with a basement ceiling funded by the Ladies Aid Society and prepared for spring cleanup.
President Roosevelt discussed potential new taxes with congressional leaders in response to a $308,000 increase in the agricultural appropriation bill. The hike could push 1947 expenditures toward the constitutional debt limit of $45,000,000,000 unless other cuts are made. Senate Leader Barkley said Roosevelt doubted the likelihood of new taxes, while leaders expect Senate approval of the farm bill.
Fam O J Brown announced Troop F will receive checks tonight totaling 1497.58 for three months of drills, about 400 to 500 above normal due to 18 drill sessions in the period under defense measures. Major Guy D Thompson inspected Troop F in Washington as Captain Brown noted a car load of horses arriving tonight.
A church meeting begins at 6 00 with a business session to hear reports from officers organizations and the pastor. New officers will be chosen for the year starting April first. All members and friends are invited. The Ladies Aid society will meet all day Friday at the church.
Four licenses to operate motor vehicles were granted to four men here Friday and four mothers failed to pass the examinations. Those receiving licenses include Wayne Neff of Wayland C D James Wade L Bennett of Brighton and L H Luckenbill with one passing the chauffeurs' exam and five failing. The license was granted to Sam Neff of Washington.
On Highway 92 near West Chester, Joe Simmering lost control while reentering the pavement after passing a car and sustained bruises with two passengers uninjured. In Kalona, William Fry ditched his father Dr. J F Fry’s car on the same highway after speeding through a curve. none were hurt. Road conditions were dangerous Saturday night due to snow reducing visibility and making pavements slippery.
Snow fell for several hours in Washington covering ground to about three inches. By Sunday night most of it had melted except in shaded areas due to bright sun. Last night the temperature dropped to 22 degrees after a Sunday high of 35 degrees. Clouds bring continued cold today.
Six will be kept locally for Troop F to replace horses lost in the past year. Seven will be sent by truck to Iowa City, five to Burlington, and two to Ottumwa. The new animals raise the local troopers’ total to 22 horses.
Mrs Erminta Sowash Leet aged 63 died at 10 30 PM Saturday after a stroke at her home two miles north of West Chester She was born February 12 1872 and lived in the community all her life She married Willard E B Leet September 15 1898 Survivors include her husband a daughter Mrs M H McDowell eight grandchildren three sisters Josephine Bertha Lewash and Mia Ross Van Nostrand of Washington Funeral services will be private at 1 34 PM Thursday at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev J B Pollock in charge Burial in Film Grove cemetery Friends may call at the funeral home until the hour of service.
Keota voters at a Friday town hall caucus nominated current officers to run again with H E Seyde withdrawing as assessor. The Citizens ticket remains the sole election slate with J E Powell named for mayor.
Reports claim Finland and Russia reached modified terms at the U S embassy in Moscow with Finland seeking parliamentary approval and Scandinavia ready to guarantee Finland’s independence yet officials gave no confirmation. A Helsinki war communique reports 1000 more Russian deaths. Sweden weighs foreign affairs response.
Washington officials maintained a reticent stance as reports circulated that U S officials were behind the scenes in Europe seeking peace. The State Department denied claims that Ambassador Laurence Steinhardt helped arrange Finnish Russian peace talks, issued after publication and as talks faced possible collapse.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain told the House that Britain and France offered to aid Finland with all available resources though Finland had not made a direct appeal. Reports from Moscow and Scandinavia suggested negotiations were progressing, with uncertain Finnish acceptance of Russian terms.
