The Cedar River west of Muscatine continued rising with residents noting more than two feet gain in the past 24 hours. Over a thousand acres of farmland in the county are submerged and several thousand more may flood under current conditions.
Chickasaw County and New Hampton records show three year tax payments averaging 97.52 percent of amounts due as compiled by the county auditor.
A 13 month old girl, Margaret Darling, daughter of William Darling a farmer, survived a gasoline flat iron blast in a bedroom Sunday. The explosion blew out six windows, damaged furniture and set the floor and walls on fire, but the house was saved.
Merton Clark, 17, is in Mol hospital with serious injuries after a 100000 pound baler rolled over him. Paul Hook was driving the tractor moving the baler when Clark fell and could not escape.
Voters approved a plan to issue 20,000 dollars in bonds to create an artificial lake and state park east of Paullina. The project includes purchasing a quarter section of land for the site.
Mrs. Emil EK Kole reported to police that 50 dollars was stolen from her purse on a piano at Edwards Congregational Church Sunday morning. Earlier another 60 dollars vanished from an overcoat in the cloak room at First Christian Church.
Mrs. Mary Edmunds aged 67 of Edgewood was killed as she crossed the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul tracks. A freight train struck her at the crossing in town.
Terry Tyrell three years old son of Mr and Mrs Leo Tyrrell escaped serious injury after stepping into the road near their Lamont home two miles east of town. The automobile struck him and passed over his body without touching him.
A drastic revision of the state beer law drafted by Assistant Attorney General Leroy Kader would set a 2.75 percent alcohol by weight limit, automatically making near beer illegal in Iowa. The maximum would remain at 4 percent.
Fred Matvechuk, 41, attacked his estranged wife with a razor in Cedar Rapids on Sunday, killing her four hours later. He was found with his throat cut and windpipe severed, in critical condition at Mercy hospital Sunday night.
John W. Schmidt, age 93, who marched with Sherman to the sea, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in a Waterloo hospital. He had entered the hospital February 20 and succumbed to complications of diseases of advanced age.
Mary Anne Cooper daughter of Mr and Mrs V N Cooper died Sunday from burns suffered when a croup tent in their Sioux City home caught fire from an electric vaporizer.
Athens dispatch reports the government led by Gen. George Condylis closing in on rebels in Macedonia. Loyalist forces move from Thrace to seal off a fleeing rebel group near the sea while rebel commander Gen. Camenos allegedly flees toward the Bulgarian frontier with officers aboard the surrendered Helle. Hundreds of rebels retreat to the mountains as bombing ceases.
Judge D W Hamilton opened the March term and ordered petit jurors to report April 1 instead of March 18 due to planning changes. He will be in Adel next week substituting for Judge W S Cooper in the Adolph Martens murder trial opening March 18 in Newton.
The Methodi st church auditorium was rededicated in a morning service filled with worshipers. The ceremony featured a responsive service a choir anthem Open the Gates of the Temple and a trustees presentation. The room was decorated in Versailles Gray with rose and green accents and a stained stone effect.
The city election will have no contest this year as petitions feature a single ticket. Incumbents appear on the ballot with a blank write in option, covering the mayor, councilmen at large Dr. O Boller James Morrow Ward councilmen J H Squire Will Dupuis Carl Hedges Dr Wred Reta Assessor Charles E B Lemley Park Commissioner Frank Miller Treasurer Ed Miick.
Beverly Hills California reports Mateouma Campbell, an Englishman, achieving 276 miles an hour in an automobile. Local bragging notes the beach aided the run and questions the status of the automobile speed record. The sub district declamatory contest will be held in Washington high school auditorium tomorrow night at o'clock. Admission is fifteen cents. Two Washington contestants, Catherine Masson and Billy Cox, who placed first at West Chester preliminaries, will compete. Schools attending include Columbus Junction Keota Keswick Sigourney Washington Webster and What Cheer. Music by Washington high school vocal and instrumental groups and soloists.
Alexander Joseph Dawson 91, veteran of the Civil War, former county treasurer and Washington businessman, died after a brief illness at his home 314 East Jefferson. He served in Company F Eleventh Iowa Infantry, fought at Shiloh and Vicksburg, marched with Sherman, taught school, farmed in Kansas, and later entered commerce and real estate before retiring years ago. Funeral Tuesday at 2:30 at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev. A M Malcolm. burial in Elm Grove cemetery.

Last night three churches Methodist Presbyterian United Presbyterian held outstanding services as part of the statewide United Church Loyalty crusade. Richard H. McCleery spoke on The Fifth Horseman to a full audience. the event highlighted a two-team point race between Reds led by Ted Hrowd and Whites led by Ted Bailey, with Reds scoring 13 700 points to 7 00 for the Whites.
Mrs Sophia KH Gasaway 85 widow of Thomas J Gasaway died at 4 30 am. Funeral at 10 am Thursday at Hoskins funeral home with burial in Clay cemetery. Survived by two sons JL Gasaway and W Gasaway a sister May Cushman and three nieces Vie Goodman Atta Herold Bertha Mikseh. Born December 19 1851 in Richland Keokuk county. Member of Clay Congregational Church.
The Iowa House passed a resolution urging Congress to pay soldiers bonuses immediately by a vote of 85 to 4, striking a currency and inflationary provision. The same day the Senate approved a bill cutting the fish and game license fee to one dollar amid broader reform moves in the administration’s highway, safety, and welfare plans.
Funeral services were held at 2 30 p m today at Sherman s funeral home for Katherine Helen Phillips 44 of Washington who died Saturday at Sunnyslope Sanitarium Ottumwa Rev A A Wing officiated and burial was at Woodlawn cemetery She was born December 19 1895 in Washington daughter of Arthur and Emma Sarah (Flood) Cooley and lived most of her life here She married Ray Joss in 1915 and Karl E Phillips in 1922 who afterwards lived in Des Moines They returned to Washington four years before Phillips death March 29 1981 She had been in ill health for several years and had treatment at Ottumwa hospital for two years She belonged to the Washington Baptist church Surviving are a daughter Mrs Sam Gregory of Washington a sister Mrs Neil Humby of Washington a brother Karl Cooley of Lawton Ohio a stepfather Nick Bidwell of Washington and one grand daughter Her mother died two weeks ago.
