Snow began around 6 30 this morning and continued, making driving hazardous in town and country. Two inches had fallen by noon with snow packed highways and limited visibility. Motorists used headlights. two cars were stuck between Washington and Ainsworth as edge of highways disappeared under the snow.
Fire at 7 30 this morning heavily damaged a flame dwelling on South Hill the home of Mrs Nellie Meeker and her son Rob rt and family the blaze started from an explosion of a kitchen oil stove Mrs Meeker suffered facial burns but was not seriously hurt a two room one story addition was completely destroyed and the rest of the house damaged beyond livable condition for now
Omaha police escort John R. Whites 27 deaf church elder back to Omaha to face murder charges in the death of his wife Katherine 24. Whites signed a Chicago police statement admitting strangling her after a quarrel in sign language on a taxi ride home from a movie. He was in Bridewell hospital for observation of a stomach knife wound and said he intended suicide after learning of the death. Extradition waived. return to Omaha planned at noon tomorrow.
Kenneth I. Jonson director of field service and professional relations for the Iowa State Education Association will address the Washington County Education Association at Washington High School on Monday March 12 at 3 p.m. His talk will focus on Whats Ahead for Teachers. Arrangements were made by Russell Bannister with the meeting open to the public and urged attendance by teachers and PTA groups. Firefighters were called to the Snyder farm at 6 39 after Mr Snyder noticed flames early Friday and praised their prompt response.
The closing out sale announced by Robert L. Adams for this afternoon has been postponed to Monday afternoon at 1 50 oclock due to today's snow storm.
Mrs. Carl Kelly aged 61 of 202 North Avenue C died at her home at 4 45 am after a week of serious illness. Funeral services are set for Monday at 3 30 pm at Jones funeral home with Rev Earl Longfellow officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. She was born Gertrude Mildred Chilcote on November 10 1889 in St Joseph Missouri. She married Carl Kelly May 14 1915 in Fairfield and moved to Washington as a child. She was a Baptist. Survivors include her husband three sons Thomas John Paul and six daughters Florence Boehme Lyda May Grimes Edna Woodrutt Margaret Dixon Betty Prouty Jeannette Gosling 14 grandchildren and a brother Earl Chilcote. One son Charles preceded her in death.
A Social Security Administration representative from Burlington will be in Washington on Wednesday March 14 from 9:50 to 10:50 at the Iowa State Employment Office 1101 West Main Street to assist filing Old-Age and Survivors Insurance claims or issue social security numbers. He will also be in Wellman in the afternoon from 2 to 2:50.
Mt. Vernon engineer Walter Gormley, 33, declares he will not pay income taxes this year after IRS seizure and sale of his station wagon for three prior delinquencies. He says taxes fund war and politician salaries and vows continued non cooperation.
Several Journal reports confirm Chester L Hampton lives in Washington not North Washington. He resided here last summer with a home on South Avenue G and is awaiting legislative action to bring his German wife to the United States.

A one week old Fairfield baby Patricia Scheidel with an enlarged gland affecting lung blood flow was driven by patrol car to Ottumwa for X ray treatment unavailable locally. G C Cole and Patrolman Rene Sims accompanied by a nurse and oxygen tank completed the 50 mile round trip in 1 hour 48 minutes.
Oliver Corporation sues United Electrical Workers union and Local 115 in Charles City seeking 112 815 damages from January and February walkouts at the Charles City plant. The firm says out-of-pocket losses stem from the Independent union members actions described as panther hunting during disputes over piecework rates and other issues.
The famed motion picture King of Kings will be shown at 7 30 Sunday evening at the Methodist church as part of the weekly union church service. The Methodist church arranges this week’s program for pre Easter union services ending March 18 with Evangelical and Reformed church in charge.
A Washington county meeting of Legionnaires is announced by county commander Charles Hotle for Monday night at Brighton. All American Legion members are urged to attend.
Western powers proposed a compromise agenda for a Big Four foreign ministers meeting in Paris. The draft aimed to examine causes of tension in Europe and seek improvements in Soviet Union United States United Kingdom and France relations while considering arms and Germany questions. Soviet deputy foreign minister Gromyko rejected the draft as unclear and said it could stifle discussion.
Signed petitions naming H M Putnam former Washington county sheriff as mayoral candidate in city elections set for Monday March 26 were filed with city clerk John Sowash after needed signatures. Putnam’s entry provides first opposition to Citizens party slate headed by W B Dupuis. Putnam previously served as sheriff and now serves as a Washington justice of the peace.
Polls open at noon Monday at city hall and stay open until 7 pm. Four candidates vie for two seats on the school board including incumbent Dr M J Cruise L A Holland Gilbert Mills and Kenneth Peters. Voters must be US citizens 21+ residing in the county six months and in the school district 10 days. ballots must be marked with a single X opposite chosen names.
Everett L. Stewart underwent brain tumor removal at University Hospital Town City Monday and has not regained consciousness as of yesterday. Doctors say this delay is common after such surgery and patients often regain consciousness in four to six days.
Mr. and Mrs. John Lytle and their family of Oskaloosa spend the weekend at the parental Dr. H. Co. Hull and Lloyd Lytle homes, enjoying time with relatives.
Washington county officials renew warning against dumping garbage along road rights of way. They report numerous violations and vow prosecution for offenders. They note a city dump exists in Washington and other towns and warn that roadside dumping creates mess and road maintenance hazards.
Graveside rites were held for Mary Catherine Lewis infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Raymond Lewis in Columbus City cemetery at 2 pm. Rev BE Sears led the service with Stacy Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include the parents a sister Rae Lee and grandparents Mr and Mrs Walter Lewis of Columbus Junction and Mr and Mrs McGraw of Washington.
The Washington Fruit Market switches to new management Monday March 12 as owner Julius Kunik hands over to Dave Thompson and Daryl Dodder. Kunik will run a new Iowa City store next month. Dodder has six plus years at the market. Thompson brings 12 years in Washington grocery work and leadership at National Team store. Also joining are Mrs. Dave Thompson and Don Ochs the butcher. Dennis OLoughlin remains to complete the staff.
Five UN divisions gained up to four miles on a 40 mile Korean front as Chinese forces retreat. The 8th Army said Communist losses neared 30,000 with 6,849 killed or captured in ground action yesterday. The 25th Division moved up 1,000 to 4,000 yards north of the Han river amid light resistance and hills northeast of Yangpyong fell to U.S. troops after night counterattacks.
Robert Bell former Washington high student received the music recognition award for the first week of March at Iowa State College in Ames. He is a senior in architectural engineering and president of Phi Mu Alpha, the musical honorary fraternity.
Funeral services for Howard F Freshwaters were conducted at United Presbyterian Church on Friday afternoon March 9 at 2 30 with Dr Evert Haney presiding. A quartet provided music and Masonic graveside rites were led by Glen Mace. An American Legion guard of honor stood at the church and Masons Demo lay city employees and Freshwaters staff attended in a group. Burial followed at Elm Grove Cemetery. Jones Funeral Home arranged.
The court house issued a marriage license today to Don Duane Dickinson and Alice June Statler both of Brighton.
Des Moines area faces freezing rain sleet and snow with a switch to rain in extreme south portions. Temperatures hold steady today then rise slightly in north central tonight and southeast Sunday. Winds 20 to 30 mph shifting to northerly Sunday. Low tonight 25 northwest to 65 southeast. Sunday highs 30 to 35 north and west, 40 southeast. Outlook: Monday morning 14 to 25, partly cloudy and colder with highs 25 to 32.
