A large vote was cast in the Washington school election with 542 ballots. H. F. Steck led with 392 votes, Dr. Jenkins earned 387, H. I. Sampson 149, and M. Stinson 140, as neighbors praised the turnout and competition.
The three months old infant of Mr and Mrs William Culbertson died this morning. Funeral is at 2 p m tomorrow with interment in Elm Grove cemetery. The first named couple are well known locally and reside near West Chester. Other names listed include Walter Sifely, James A Gilmore, Bessie DeLong, Ethel Hopkins, Samuel B Warren, Myrtle S Wilbur with ties to Wayland and Ainsworth areas.
The spring term opens with Judge Dewey handling probate work today and Judge McCoy from Oskaloosa presiding tomorrow for a one day session. The grand jury, foreman Walker, begins duties as the court adjourns until Tuesday next. The docket is light aside from the Conklin case from Mahaska County which may take time. The Journal will report case dispositions and, where possible, testimony.
Creston reports Sheriff Davenport transported Bert Luke from Texas to Creston to arrest him as an alleged accomplice of Bob Perrigo. Luke proved not the wanted man, though a cousin of the culprit. After confirmation, Luke was released and the sheriff will pay the travel costs.
Justice Maxwell reports six civil cases for Saturday while Justice Rogers handles one case daily, marking a week with quiet overall activity but steady civil business.
This evening the fire company will elect a new chief after the previous term expired. Fire boys will participate as the decision is announced.
Dedrick Burns, longtime resident of this county, died suddenly at 7 o clock last night while seated in his chair reading. The death occurred in Sigourney and was reported as unexpected.
Lon Moothart sustained a severe finger injury this afternoon while loading brick at the Swift’s yard. He caught his finger between bricks as he moved them into the wagon bed.
Des Moines reports an extra session likely within ten days as lawmakers seek to complete codes. Conservatives aim to finish core work this session and hold an additional six week session in January, while many senators oppose hurried revision. Both houses held night sessions to adjourn by Wednesday for the Republican state convention in St. Louis.

Des Moines reports Mrs Elmina Wyman of Mitchellville who returned from a walk with her husband and, in a fit of temporary insanity, took strychnine. She died within minutes. The deceased had long suffered illness and the death of a son years ago. Her husband, a painter, recounts the moment she asked what would she do when she is gone before revealing she had taken poison.
The trial before the grand jury of Al Bull for the murder of Maud Strawn has run four days and will need one or two more days to finish the investigation in Sheldon.
Sioux City reports William P Royce, condemned for Nellie Paten’s murder, spends time in his cell smoking and playing solitaire, with guards noting his routine remains unchanged.
In Muscatine on March 9 the special election produced 2,358 votes for high school bonds with about 1,000 women casting ballots. The pro bonds measure won by roughly ten to one.
Joseph Bruner, once a policeman and saloon keeper, has disappeared from Cedar Rapids after more than a week away. His wife and relatives lack knowledge of his whereabouts and fear his threats to leave may have been carried out.
