Helsinki March. President Juho K Paasikivi announced the government recommends negotiations begin in Moscow on a Russo Finnish friendship and military pact. A joint government parliament delegation will handle talks as agrarians and social democrats resisted negotiations to the end.
Judge Beehly on his first day as presiding judge of the March term in Washington signed a divorce decree. Addie M. Bergman was granted a divorce from Karl L. Bergman and allowed to resume her maiden name Addie Malvina Snow. The decree granted furniture to the plaintiff and ordered the defendant to pay court costs. No alimony. Twenty six petit jurors were excused from action.
Democratic precinct workers in Iowa eight districts meet to discuss candidates ahead of the May 15 convention. The slate includes James France Tipton, Edward Wicher, Richard Barnhart, Lester Van Pelt, Don Ryan, Guy Smith, Gibson Holliday, Vincent Brown, Morris O Reilly, L P Genung, and Morris Rawlings, with district assignments noted.
J Edgar Hoover states that 85 to 90 percent of driving accidents in many large cities are caused directly by individuals who break traffic laws. This claim underscores the role of rule violations in urban crash rates.
Three people died and at least 25 were injured in weekend crashes blamed partly on icy roads. Victims included Mrs. Patrick A. Frank, W. H. Hollingsworth, and Alfred Munson, with incidents near Covington Cedar Rapids Anamosa Dubuque and highway 61.
Workmen from the German Electric Company in Washington under supervisor Wi Ek have begun electrical repair work at the post office after a government-awarded contract. New lights will be installed in front of the building and a separate contract covers minor heating system repairs with Burt W. Newman of Des Moines expected to start work soon, per Postmaster J. Brown.
At Hamilton Field Cal March 8 a B 29 Superfortress with 11 aboard from Spokane to Honolulu was reported unreported. The 52nd Air Rescue Squadron sent two search planes a PBY and a B 17 lifeboat to sweep Pacific routes up to 600 miles from San Francisco. The aircraft left midnigh t and weather for the 2000 mile overwater leg was reported as good.
Nobie Nave, 81, confessed to shooting Roscoe Colby, 55, in Fort Madison. Police say Nave fired three shotgun blasts from six to eight feet as Colby slept. Nave then met Dr. George Harper, who alerted police. Colby had custody of Nave’s mother’s children after a divorce. the family details include five Nave children.
More than 100 applications from 55 counties for annual farm bureau scholarships. Mrs Roscoe Eliason Iowa farm bureau women s committee chairman announced. Eighteen recipients will receive two year scholarships to Iowa colleges. entries are recommended by teachers principals and a special scholarship committee.
United States Russia China and France began a week long emergency talks on the Palestine issue at Park Avenue headquarters. The four powers agreed to involve Britain and UN Secretary General Trygve Lie and to discuss whether the crisis endangers world peace along with related questions. Delegates described the opening session as extremely normal and planned resumed discussions the next day.
In Vienna on March 8 a young American draftee was knocked down by a Russian guard and shot in the back while prostrate. An Austrian girl with him was seized by 40 bayonet armed Russians as the patrol moved to aid him. The soldier, Private Jack Grunden of Portland Oregon, 18, attached to a military police battalion, likely will lose an arm but is expected to recover. The incident was described as deliberately provoked by the Russians.
A Twentieth Century Fund study notes 25 percent population growth from 1920 to 1940 while deaths rose only slightly. The death rate fell from 17.2 per 1000 in 1600 to 10.5 per 1000 in 1941, indicating improving mortality despite bigger population.
The farm bureau committee will select 36 scholarship finalists from county applicants. To qualify, students must be rural, in the upper third of their class, show leadership, be healthy, need aid, and plan to teach in rural elementary schools. The Cedar Falls review occurs Thursday and Friday.
Plans are underway for a sales and merchandising school in Washington sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. L I Norton chairs the committee and says the course will be open to all residents, with 300 attending reservations indicated. Instructors will be eminent in their fields and films will supplement lessons. Certificates will be awarded after the series. Norton has previously run Ottumwa sales schools and attended major programs.
Fire discovered at 7 45 this morning caused considerable damage to J B Randle residence at 40 East Madison street before Washington firemen brought it under control. The basement was ablaze when called. Fire cause not yet determined. Most furnishings removed but smoke water and fire damage will be high with the back and east side heavily wrecked after over two hours of fighting.
Funeral services for Daniel J. Gates were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock in the Jones funeral home with Dr. Fred E. Miller in charge. Pallbearers were Arthur Anderson, Fred Kliopfenstein, Phil C. Weldin, Don Ross, Don Applegate and George Freshwaters. Burial was after services.
Iowa state employment service in Washington reports February activity under director Mrs. Permelia A. Lay. Receptions totaled 1077. 50 employers referred to local jobs. 33 new applications with 7 veterans and 9 women. 5 by physically handicapped applicants. 269 applicant interviews included 122 veterans and 52 women. 28 veterans and 8 women placed in jobs. one physically handicapped worker also employed. Eleven employers were visited. Budget cuts reduced local staff to one person. Office at 208 West Washington Street, in former Attorney Richard Stewart space. Farmers seek single and married farm hands. openings remain for good workers.
Washington Republicans held precinct caucuses on Friday March 5 naming delegates to the county convention on Friday March 12. The four wards chose delegates including N E Shannon R F McFarlane C F Letts Mrs Carl Voorhees Mrs Howard Crozier H M Putnam and Jay Brewer with T A Michels as chairman and Dr W S Kyle as secretary. Delegates to the county convention listed include T A Michels W B Dupuis Mrs Mary Jeggs Walter H Riesey Edith Shields Mrs W B Dupuis Mrs W S Kyle Mrs Belle Rice Harry Simpson L A Jones Julius Enslen and Keith Norton.
Reverend Lawrence Lacour and his crusade troupe closed a two week series at a Washington Methodist church with a 30 minute concert and final sermon titled Lets Face the Truth. The popular sessions drew large crowds at evening services and included meetings for students and young adults. Cooperating churches plan to continue the union services until Easter.
Members of the Washington V F W post will elect officers at the regular meeting in the K C hall on Tuesday March 9 at eight o clock. Commander Milo Steele Jr issued an appeal for attendance. A fish dinner with all trim mings will follow the business session.
George F. Masson Jr. makes wire recordings of associate Presbyterian church services for shut ins and others unable to attend. Additional church group meetings are planned with delegates named including Mrs. Phil Weldin and L M Eicher. alternates listed. Delegates named at the fourth ward caucus include Ode Ferguson and Harry Montgomery among others.
The Senate unanimously passed Knowland amendments to the Marshall Plan, banning most U S exports to 'Russia and satellites' under ERP and mandating 590 percent of ERP goods be shipped on American vessels when possible. Senator McKellar urged a Western defense lead as tensions rise after Moscow actions in Europe. Secretary Marshall appealed for speedy ERP action to House leaders.
Washington county tax collections show a strong start for 1948 with January and February totals of 113 530 39 and 115 415 12 respectively, well above 1947. The treasurer notes an overall year end increase of 147 771 75 versus 1947, while use tax receipts also exceed prior year figures. Vehicle registrations through February include 1395 trucks 5372 cars 711 farm trailers and 248 regular trailers, up from 1216 trucks 5128 cars 675 farm trailers and 2200 regular trailers a year ago.
