In Des Moines labor circles unions issue an official neutral position amid the AFL’s dispute with John L. Lewis Committee for Industrial Organization, according to reports.
A dice machine filled with nickels was stolen from the Art Beaver cafe. Ten men entered the cafe and six or seven distracted Mr. Beaver while the others fled with the dice machine.
Arrival of a six and a half pound baby girl at University hospital in March makes Mr and Mrs Ardillus Holderness grandparents to 26 children. They were born in Millersburg and moved to Iowa City 17 years ago. Mr Holderness is 61 and Mrs Holderness 55.
Dr. Hiram Clayton Finch of Pulaski Davis County, claimed as the region's oldest physician, died at his daughter's Bloomfield home. He practiced medicine for fifty years including two decades in Lynnville and three decades in Pulaski. Survived by his wife and one daughter.
In Clay county, W. A. Salton leads William Reardon by 2 votes after a county recount declared Salton winner. Reardon has carried the dispute to district court over 43 missing ballots that could affect the rural school election outcome.
A fire in Muscatine gutted the Elerman Gremmel tobacco warehouse with an estimated loss around 5000 dollars. Firefighters battled the blaze for two hours until control was reached. The majority of loss was due to paper supplies and part was insured.
Arethia Mann, a McGregor fisherman, proves fish are biting despite a frozen river. He cut an ice hole to drop a line when a silver carp snapped and bit his hand, yet Mann reeled in the fish.
A 500 spectator vote at the All Iowa Exhibition of Art selected Lydia E B Curtis from Council Bluffs for a quaint oil painting titled All Town Maneton of the 1850s. The Town Federation of Women's Clubs sponsored the show.

Mrs Carl Hanehar attended the funeral of Mrs Karl Bedwell in Muscatine yesterday. The services were held at the family residence and attended by neighbors and friends.
About 6,400 General Motors workers were idle after a stay-in strike at GM plant No. 4 in Flint Michigan. The action affected 4,000 workers at No. 4 and 2,400 more across plants 5 8 and 9, while plants 2 6 and 10 and final assembly stayed in operation. Union leaders cited alleged discrimination against union workers as the strike cause with no disorder reported.
An SOS from a British steamer reported in distress near Bordeaux in the Bay of Biscay after shelling by four Spanish warships. The Ada is identified as the ship on fire and sinking, with four British destroyers heading to assist. later notices contradicted claims of an attack.
Funeral services are set for Mrs A B Moore of Ainsworth at 2 p m Tuesday in the Methodist church. Rev S S Sharps and Rev E J Shook will officiate. Burial will be in Ainsworth Cemetery. Mrs Moore died Sunday morning after a three year illness from a heart ailment. She was born Irene Supplee November 12, 1857, on a farm south of Ainsworth and married Albert B Moore January 15, 1885. Surviving are her husband and eight children, a sister, eleven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
The Iowa Senate approved a measure to greatly cut state income tax with a 30 to 17 vote after dissension. An exemption would shield the first $1,000 of single income and $1,500 for married couples from taxation, proposed by Senator Lester Gillette.

Mrs. Fr A Um land of Birnamwood Wisconsin is recovering from influenza after attending her father in law s funeral. Her husband Mr Um land returned to Washington then went back to Wisconsin to be with her. Mr Amiland has moved to 615 Fast Washington street and plans to reopen his Washington cheese factory soon after winter closure.
Will and Gladys Ahern vaudeville and film stars headline the Cinema Circus at the State theater. Mrs Ahern is a Frink kin and the pair perform Russian and rope dances, including a rope dance atop a circus wagon, with recent appearances at the Biltmore hotel in Los Angeles.
The Iowa House approved a measure 55 to 36 to abolish the 35 percent requirement for primaries, allowing nominations to be decided at party conventions. The bill, led by Republicans Davis of Winterset and Good of Ogden, aims to let the people’s primary vote count without forcing a nomination threshold. An amendment to set a 25 percent cutoff was defeated 46 to 39.
A group of mothers led by Mrs. Ed Gray and Mrs. W J Masson will host an eatable sale at the Washington cleaners to raise funds for high school band uniforms. Parents of band members are urged to donate and others may contribute food for sale. The sale begins at 9 a m Saturday and runs until all items are sold to support the April music contest preparations.
In Cannes France on March 8 Mrs Wallis Warfield Simpson left a villa with Mrs Herman Rogers of New York for an extended vacation. The departure was secretive with altered license plates on the car and tight holding around her movements.
March 8 report says James Bruno, a clerk at Al Levich Loan, wrestled with a youthful armed bandit, grabbed the gun, and chased the robber to a car where Bruno was knocked off a running board. Bruno bore powder burns and a bullet tear. the weapon jammed twice as the bandit tried to fire. Also notes Joe and Raymond Jear of Delta visiting the Hinshaw home for dinner.
Iowa employers will receive status report blanks as the unemployment compensation commission mails out over 85 000 forms to gatheremployment data. The campaign aims to identify employers liable for the 1 tax on 1936 payrolls and to prepare a detailed industrial classification for federal statistical needs. Contributions to the fund reached 2 167 553 77 by March 6 with 3 799 employers paying tax, far below the estimated 4 300 liable. a March 10 deadline to avoid penalties is stressed as extensions are unlikely.

Four tremors rocked the San Francisco bay area with the first at 2:31 a.m. Bringing hotels to the streets, the quake rattled windows and beds but caused no material damage. It was felt across the bay, Santa Clara valley, and as far as Salinas. Professor Perry Byerly stated it was the heaviest local shock since May 13, 1933.
