A Cresco county clerk Ruth Woodard signed her name beside Sears Hoseley of McGregor on a marriage license. Hoseley serves as court reporter for District Judge W. L. Eichendort. The piece notes 771 licenses issued in four years in the county clerk's office.
Des Moines and state insurance department warn of a fraudster described as a smooth talker with prominent gold teeth wanted in six states for fraudulent health, accident and life insurance sales. He has operated in Clarinda Shenandoah Des Moines and Ames.
Newton reports that three Jasper county women will each receive a bequest of $5,000 from the estate of W. A. Foreman of New York City. Mrs. Jane Bishop of Baxter, Mrs. H. S. Paschal of Colfax, and Mrs. Mary Wyatt of Newton are named in the will. Foreman, head of Foreman & Clark, clothing manufacturers, died in 1932. the estate is appraised at over $800,000.
Gov Kraschel defends a proposed tax on trucks at a victory dinner in Sioux City. He calls trucks Iowa’s heaviest taxpayer and says the measure will boost highway funding while he supports a home stead exemption law to promote home ownership.
DES MOINES Sen. Paul Millhane of Clarinda and Rep. Earl C. Fishbaugh Jr. of Shenandoah introduced bills to give a break to a person who signs a note with a friend. If he pays his friend's note he would get an exemption on his income tax. repayment would later be reportable income if the friend pays him back.
Dr. Paul L. Dengler director of the Austro American Institute of Education in Vienna told a University of Iowa audience that another world war is unlikely in the near future He warned that Rome could become a site for the next civil war while predicting low chances of a new global conflict.
Des Moines report says farmers may buy limestone this spring and pay next fall in cornstalks under a plan arranged by Otto S. Muntz of the Greater Iowa Commission. Maizewood Corp. of Dubuque will guarantee payment for limestone delivered to farmers who will supply cornstalks to the firm next fall.
Iowa City Republicans split over mayor Thomas KE Martin as Atty Robert Larson announces a nonpartisan ticket backed by GOP opponents of municipal ownership. The slate favors a write-in nomination for Martin in the primary, despite GOP central committee opposition.
Estherville well driller Dan Tuttle, 68, died on a farm near Estherville when two dynamite sticks exploded in the back seat of a car he rode in. He was at the Pat Sullivan farm preparing caps for blasting rock. caps were wired to a storage battery. The blast blew off the car top and doors, with fragments found in the yard.
A women centered matinee at the State Theater next Tuesday features The Last of Mrs. Cheyney with Joan Crawford Robert Montgomery and William Powell. A 25 model spring fashion show by American Home Fortnightly Club sections 1 2 and 3 follows the film. Regular matinee prices apply with doors opening 2 15 and showtime 2 30.
The March term of district court opens here next Monday with Judge J. G. Patterson of Oskaloosa presiding. Twenty new cases have been filed for the term and many old cases remain unresolved.
Three new divorce filings appear on the docket. The Mitchell divorce case has been dismissed but remains listed due to inadvertent docket retention.
Madrid dispatch says four thousand loyalist soldiers were fatally hurt in offensives against Oviedo Toledo Navalcarnero and the Austurian Catalonian front. Rebel planes bombed a thirty mile front from ten last night to one this morning, one of the rebels stated at Salamanca.
Kalona and Wellman Baptist churches announce Rev. and Mrs. C. E. Hillis have accepted a call to lead both congregations. Their opening services are set for April 4. Interim pastor Rev. M. C. Carstensen of Washington Baptist Church is thanked for his support.
George Kleese Hartman 77 died yesterday afternoon at 733 South Iowa Avenue after a long illness from complications. He had been bedfast since January. Funeral at 2 pm Sunday at Sherman’s funeral home conducted by Dr. Arthur Atack. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Surviving wife Minnie Singmaster Hartman, daughter Mrs. Guy Carlton, one grandchild, all of Washington. Four brothers Isaac, John, William, Walter, and one brother and one sister are deceased.
State Fire Marshal J Vin cent Pyle reports a 30 percent drop in Iowa fire deaths for January February 1937 versus 1936 and singles out unwise kerosene use as deadly. He cites Orange City tragedy where a family of four perished after kerosene poured into a stove caused an explosion and fire. March deaths already match last year’s total despite February showing lower fatalities.
Sixteen local people will support the Shakespearean cast in Julius Caesar at the high school auditorium March 17 as a high school band benefit. Local students were selected for supernumeraries by Mr Brayton for their training and talent.
Mayor La Guardia, defiantly defending free speech, says he is glad to live in a democracy and that he cannot be removed from office over reactions abroad. He repeats that he will say what he said and won't be muzzled or jailed for his remarks.
Louis Beranek is lodged in the county jail today after being arrested on the charge of intoxication and disturbing the peace.
In Orange City Iowa a farm fire is blamed on an overheated stove. Victims named include Mr and Mrs Osmund Ash eim and, in March, Mrs Garrett Pals and Harold Pals aged four.
The House approved a 526 million dollar annual naval supply bill approving construction to add 34 warships as currents in the drive toward a treaty navy. Opponents questioned the need and criticized exemptions from the 40 hour Walsh Healy law with Labor Secretary Perkins resisting.
Iowa lawmen, led by Chief W W Akers, issued a sharp lookout for Clair Gibson alias C D Logan, a suspected bank robber wanted in Minnesota and Iowa and to be questioned in the James Zrostick murder at Britt. Minnesota officers reported Gibson may be driving a 1938 Pontiac with Minnesota plates 1935 or 1936 B 48590.
Floyd Grecian has returned to his duties at the bakery following a week of illness. He resumed handling dough and supervising morning shift operations.
Ottumwa reports more than 100 families displaced in the Central addition area as Des Moines River flood crested and began receding. National Guard units stood ready, CCC trucks evacuated refugees, and crates of cots and blankets supported evacuees at the armory and local hotels houses. Officials estimate property damage near $50,000, similar to the 1934 June flood.
Washington dispatch reports both sides prepare a public-opinion campaign over the Roosevelt court plan. Democratic leaders will take the fight to the people with speeches and radio addresses while administration spokesmen defend the plan. Senator Burke will respond in Nebraska tonight followed by Senator Wheeler in Chicago and Senator Smith urging farmers to oppose the plan.
