Burnham and Hankey file a 5000 dollar slander suit against Harry Moore, bank cashier, alleging repeated false statements aimed at injuring their new law practice. The case, filed in the district court, has stirred local interest with supporters on both sides. A Kansas City wedding joins Chas Dempsey and Miss Bell Goodrich, Washington residents, with plans to wed in the near future and friends sending good wishes.
The past week lists real estate transfers including A D Thompson to Jas Wingler 52a for 1600 and J M Shields to Albert Taylor 80 for 2700 plus several other parcel deals. Separately Robert Armstrong defeats Joe Butler in a heavyweight bout but suffers facial injuries. Mary E Plummer of Kalona departs for Newark Ohio after visiting W H Warner.
Late Saturday a small Anti-Saloon League gathering at Smouse's hall heard president Brockway set a plan for a county wide league. Robt. McConnaughey filled in for absent secretary Keck as Moothart Gardner and others spoke. The group aims to organize townships and enlist young Endeavor societies and pastors to support the cause with Neal Dow Day celebration planned.
An advertisement touts Hall's Catarrh Cure with a $100 reward for an uncured case. The notice asserts the Cheney firm’s honor and lists Toledo wholesale druggists. Separate items note special church meetings at Ist U P Church with Rev. Stewart and membership additions at 1st U P Church Christian Union. John Smeltzer ships cattle from Kansas City.
Yesterday was communion day at the Presbyterian church with ten new members added nine by confession of faith and one by letter. Rev. Stark is doing a good work and the congregation is increasing rapidly.
It notes Mr. Hite ships two carloads totaling forty horses to eastern markets. Robt. McCall and Howard Stiles accompanied the shipment as far as Chicago, highlighting the scale and reach of the sale.
R F White, a longtime Washington native, married Miss Urban of Pontoosic Jr last week. The couple has relocated to Colorado to run a large stock farm after White recently worked in Colorado in the railroad and other business ventures. The Journal and friends extend good wishes for their health and happiness.
At today’s school election four o’clock 404 votes cast and no ladies yet. By six o’clock near 600 votes expected as supporters work for their candidates. Also available dry oak wood four dollars per card with orders at W A Turner’s Second Hand store.
Two local residents avoided injury after a spirited horse incident near Spirit Ed. The event prompted oversight by local authorities and a safety advisory for riders and equestrian venues.
Gib Bailey suffered three severe kicks to the head and limb when a horse became unmanageable while unhar nessing at his South Washington home. He was unconscious briefly, skull fractures were treated, and recovery is expected. A second incident saw Bailey escape a worse blow from a horse’s hind legs. Miss Anna Scott departs for Chicago to pursue city mission work, with local church and community support noted for her service.
Washington county pastors and church leaders are asked to meet on Sabbath March 21 in their townships to organize a Union Local Anti-Saloon League Auxiliary and report officers. March 6, 1897, RE. F. Brockway presiding.
