Members of the Retail Merchants Bureau of the Washington Chamber of Commerce will meet Friday at 9 30 a.m. in the Iowa Southern Building. Election of officers for 1972 will be one feature of the meeting. The retail program for the remainder of the year also will be discussed.
Becky Atkinson won the $15 first prize in the Future Business Leaders of America thrift essay contest at Washington High School. Craig Caldwell earned the $10 second prize and Lee Ann Hillman received the $5 third prize. The event coincided with school activities promoting thrift and was open to all seniors in writing classes.
The annual science fair at Washington Junior High will take place Monday March 13 at the school. Doors open 7 to 9 p.m. free admission. All junior high students may enter biological or physical science projects. Judging focuses on creative ability scientific thought thoroughness skill and clarity. Five prizes with cash awards will be given in each division.
ASCS office will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday March 11 to let farmers sign up for the 1972 feed grain program. Those unable to enroll fully may sign a register by 5 p.m. Friday and enroll Saturday or early next week. County executive director Bill Day urges farmers to obtain figures from the office to assess potential benefits for 1972.
Dr. Robert E. Condon said he was informed he lost his job as head of the University of Iowa Department of Surgery effective last Thursday. Dean John Eckstein cited administrative disagreement and said Condon was relieved. Dr. Robert Sidney Ziffren will become acting head.
The one day event features Herb Howell of Iowa State University as speaker on credit management for farms. The session runs March 9 from 9 30 a m to 3 p m at the YMCA Community Room and is open to farmers bankers and agri businesspeople.
Voters in Manchester weigh Democratic and Republican fields as Muskie and Nixon hold early leads in Dixville Notch. The 1972 primary introduces 18 year olds and independents to the process while four Democratic hopefuls skip New Hampshire for Florida.
Governor Ray says he would accept 19 but prefers all rights at 18 for youths amid ongoing House opposition. The conference committee’s 19 year plan faces defeat risk as lawmakers push adjournment and possible new talks if the bill dies.
The Washington Division of the Iowa Heart Association will screen third graders in Washington County starting March 1972 using the PhonoCardioScan mini computer to detect unknown heart problems. Cooperation from the county medical society schools nurses and volunteers supports the program with parental notification and follow up care.
City council in regular session approves buying equipment for construction of a new spheroid styled water tower in Robinsons addition to be painted jewel blue. They authorize bids up to 7000 for back hoes and 1500 for a mobile home office with other budget and Park Board issues discussed.
Lloyd Marek, 57, a rural Washington farmer, is in critical condition at University Hospital in Iowa City after a farm accident Monday about 4 30 p m. He was extracting corn from his barn with a sweep auger when the machine struck his head causing extensive skull and brain damage. Found by his hired man Marshall Crossett, Marek was taken to hospital for surgery. A report says he spoke with his daughter Mrs Virginia Williams about 20 minutes before the accident.
United Press International reports Iowa will see clear to partly cloudy skies with diminishing winds and temperatures dropping to around 5 degrees in the north and near 20 in the south. Wednesday brings partly sunny skies and highs ranging from the mid 20s in the northeast to the mid 40s in the southwest.
The Iowa House approved an $80,000 appropriation 83 to 0 to fund a medical education and community orientation program at the University of Iowa. Medical students will spend summers in Iowa communities with stipends funded to encourage rural practice and familiarity with the state. Rep. Charles Grassley said the plan boosts retention of physicians in rural areas.
Dick Anderson was chosen as chairman of the annual Chamber of Commerce membership drive in Washington. The campaign runs the week of March 20 with plans for a blitz day to sign new members. Bill Whittenberg, chamber manager, and organizer Steve Wiggers discussed city hall restoration plans but no official action was taken.
Washington High School drama students rehearse Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus with Tom Coon as Faustus and an ensemble cast including Mephistophilis played by Jim Heilman and Lucifer by Norman Luers. The production features angels, demons, and historical figures in a period setting.
The Iowa Senate approved a 3 p.m. Friday adjournment of the 1972 legislature amid protests of hypocrisy. Senate Majority Leader Clifton Lamborn said the House could amend the plan as needed, with three days left and night sessions possible. Sen Minnette Doderer praised Lamborn for potential leadership.
