A Portsmouth fire killed four Raymond children aged two months to five and their 11 year old babysitter. Two traffic deaths occurred in Mills and Marshall counties, raising Iowa's weekend toll to seven.

Nationalist naval sources report a 15 000 man garrison on Matsu Island being reinforced two to three times its strength. Troops ferried by Nationalist ships with air cover, no American vessels involved. U S Admiral Stump said the forces could be defended if ordered. Foreign Minister Yeh warned Beijing of U S interest in Quemoy and Matsu. U S gave 22 landing craft to Nationalists at Kaohsiung as aid.
Rev. Thomas C. Polk, pastor of Drake Avenue Christian church Centerville, is named to lead the First Christian church of Phoenix Ariz. The move for Polk and his family will occur June 1, after years as pastor in Washington and two years in Centerville.
Riverside obituary for Carmi B. Hardy 94 of Riverside who died Sunday in Washington county hospital after years as an invalid. He born January 5, 1861, in Riverside. Funeral 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sorden and Adams chapel Riverside with Rev. C. Dendy Garrett. burial Riverside cemetery. Survived by brothers Dayhart and Harry, sister Mrs. James Kessler, and nephew LeRoy Hardy.
Rev Halsey Wakelin began his third year as pastor of the Christian church in Washington and was surprised with a morning presentation. Congregation members gathered in force and presented him with a cash gift as a token of esteem from the church community.
Washington county officials plan a March 11 YMCA meeting to review the 1955 Agricultural Conservation Cost Sharing program and discuss recommendations for 1956. Attendees include ASC committee members Soil District commissioners and district representatives from SCS Extension Farmers Home Administration and Forest Service.

A 5 below state low was reported at Spencer.
Ernest Triplett of Woodbine Iowa pleaded innocent to a murder charge in the mutilation death of eight year old Jimmy Bremmer near Sioux City. He returns to Plymouth County jail for a preliminary hearing set for March 21 at 10 a.m. and will be represented by Thomas O Tacy.
The Iowa House voted 56 to 34 against a resolution seeking a five member committee to investigate purchases and practices at the Iowa Highway Commission. Rep. Roscoe Pollock and Rep. W. D. Dillon led the push, claiming the probe would restore integrity amid dealer and employee concerns. Rep. Gus Kuester urged caution and defended reputations.
The fourth and largest 1955 nuclear blast at Yucca Flat registers around 40,000 tons of TNT. About 600 soldiers and 168 airmen watched from Camp Desert Rock as fighters and bombers simulated battle plans and radiation checks after a 7 20 a.m. CST detonation.
Earl O. Lewis a 57 year old resident of Burlington Iowa died Sunday when his station wagon failed to turn at the junction of U S 275 and 34 four miles east of Glenwood Iowa The crash occurred along the highway and authorities stated the accident was fatal.
President Eisenhower met with six national 4-H Club winners to discuss Aberdeen Angus cattle and Berkshire hogs during National 4-H Week. Elden Holsapple, 18, of Mitchell Indiana, reported the president talks about his farm and plans to raise limited poultry. the report highlights two million 4-H members and includes photos of Elden’s hog project.
Five men die in a suburban Wieboldt department store explosion in River Forest Illinois Sunday night. Four were workers installing a new gas oven in the bakery when illuminating gas was turned on. Walls floors and ceiling were wrecked with $100000 damage. Survivor Carl Carlson, 54, was inside the oven.
Des Moines reports an open hearing set for today at p.m. on an 180 million dollar toll road project in Iowa Catholic with the start of the legislative session second half. A toll road authority bill was approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee and sent to the House with a 75000 dollar setup appropriation. The east west toll road would run from Le Clair to Council Bluffs via Iowa City Des Moines and Atlantic and issue revenue bonds at up to 3.5 percent interest. The governor and a Highway Commission member would serve ex officio on the five member authority. the other three would be full time at 9000 dollars yearly.
