A Des Moines column explains that Iowa selective service defers men in agriculture or industry but retains the call option for military duty. It cautions against assuming a fixed deferment date and says calls may come before July 1 due to occupational draft changes.
A Maxwell Nebraska bomber from the Kearney army air base crashed in a snow storm, killing all 10 crew members whose identities were withheld pending notification. Mrs Dunahoo witnessed the fire and, with a neighbor, found no signs of life as responders secured the scene.
Maytag Co officials announced plans for a new 80000 dollar building to house the research and development departments of the Newton plant. The project was authorized by the U S air corps and the WPB and will be built without government aid with work starting immediately. Arthur H Neuman and Brothers of Des Moines won the contract. Des Moines firm Proudfoot Rawson Brooks and Borg will supervise as architect.
A two column article in Commercial Bulletin and Apparel Merchant honors Rothschild for editorials run in Evening Journal. He says international advertising builds reader interest and uses Editorial as a header borrowed during World War I. The piece touts Rothschilds editorials as a strong advertising idea for ready to wear merchants nationwide.
Lloyd Donovan of Brighton a World War I veteran died at Veterans hospital at 7 30 am after years of illness He served overseas with the 90th Division going abroad in 1918 and returning in 1919 Funeral services set for Thursday at the Brighton Presbyterian Church with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery Surviving are his brother Kenneth and sister Nyle Donovan a Des Moines teacher Chief mourner is the F A Hoskins funeral home.
Judge J. G. Patterson in Washington county district court ordered proceedings in the case WW D Morrison versus the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of Oklahoma. The brief session addressed continued motions relating to the pipeline dispute and scheduled further court action.
Mareh i Mrs. Albert McKean a resident here many years died about two o'clock this morning in Lelevue Hospital Muscatine following an operation. She had been taken by ambulance to the hospital yesterday afternoon. The body was brought this morning to the Richie funeral home pending arrangements. She is survived by her husband two sons Rollo of Conesville Earl of Muscatine five grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs H C Finney were held yesterday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev George Kerr officiating and Rev FE Kim mershue of Morning Sun assisting. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery with pallbearers including Wolfe Dean Write John A Stewart A L Duensing Amos Stout and Fred Donaldson.
By agreement of counsel the motion by plaintiff is continued to the next term of court. Judge Petterson completed the January term work yesterday and a new term opens next Monday March 18 with Judge P J Siegers of Newton presiding.
Moscow reports armored troops advancing on a broad front within sixty miles of Romania and ten miles from Tarnopol. The Odessa Warsaw line area is cut to hamper German supply movements while the First Ukrainian Army under Marshal Zhukov advances 15 to 20 miles through spring mud.
Marion Thompson Anderson 73 died at Mercy hospital Davenport at 8 30 p m after a one day illness of pneumonia He had worked at Bettendorf ordnance plant and planned funeral arrangements awaiting word from his New York son He was born in Ainsworth July 24 1870 and lived in Washington He is survived by son Charles Burroughs Anderson daughter Mrs Marion Gray Slavick and stepmother Mrs A Anderson Funeral by L A Jones with Elm Grove Cemetery burial
A Swiss dispatch reports Hitler intervened to prevent Finland from quitting the war while Stockholm says Finland has responded to Russia’s armistice proposal. Germany allegedly offered 300 planes and ten divisions, or 106 000 to 150 000 troops, if Finland drops peace talks. Berlin and Moscow remain at odds over a possible armistice.
More than 24,090 British prisoners of war in Germany are enrolled in educational courses run by the British Red Cross.
The city endures further winter weather as the thermometer sits around 14 degrees above zero with a continued cold wind. Skies stay overcast and temperatures hover in the same range through today.
Funeral services for Mrs. W. P. Kerr, a former Washington resident who died in California last week, are set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at L. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. F. W. Eastwood in charge. Burial will follow in Elm Grove cemetery. the funeral party is expected to arrive in Washington Thursday morning on the Golden State Limited at 5:40.
London reports that A V Alexander first lord of the admiralty warned the commons that Germany is preparing a new U boat campaign to cripple Allied sea communications and that Britain will contribute to the Far East war to the maximum of its power. He noted 1943 shipping losses were below optimistic expectations, but Germany still had submarines equal to last year.
The Washington city council met at city hall in regular session to approve bills for the past month. Mayor R. L. Lytle and councilmen discussed city affairs for the coming year with no action planned.
The Headquarters company of the first battalion first regiment Iowa State Guard held the weekly drill at the armory with about 30 attendance due to severe weather. George Baker attended as newly appointed captain succeeding Howard Miller though his commission had not arrived. the company was led by Lieutenant Rodney Kephart. Baker and Alvin Rommel were named captain and lieutenant to replace Miller and Arnold, with new officers to be checked in when commissions arrive.
The report notes that in the northwest region yesterday the temperature peaked at 85 degrees above zero. No other weather details are provided.
Four Washington nurses Helen Simmering Florence Rich Virginia Wallace and Virginia Wallerick received calls to report as ensigns in the U S naval nurses reserve corps at Great Lakes Illinois on Wednesday after earlier commissions. They trained at Mercy hospital Burlington hospital Burlington Iowa Deacon hospital Marshalltown and Des Moines facilities and have served at Washington county hospital for about a year to two years. They will leave Washington early Wednesday and undergo another physical at Great Lakes. The nurses are among the first Washington entrants to the navy and come from Washington Sigourney and Des Moines area hospitals and families.
U S infantrymen in Burma trapped 2000 enemy troops in Hukawind valley near Walawbum ten miles behind the Japanese line. Chinese forces pierced deep into enemy territory to seal the encirclement and threaten the remnants of a decimated Singapore division.
London dispatch reports American bombers and escorts shooting down 176 Nazi fighters during a daylight assault on Berlin. The mission featured the bomber Little Willie piloted by Bernard Dopko of Old Forge PA, with navigator Lud St. Clair Cederstrom aiding. Only casualty was Sgt. Robert M. Hyden Jr. of Madison WI, cut by shrapnel as German fighters attacked.
W C McFadden starts work this morning at Moore's Bootery on the east side of the square bringing nearly 42 years in the shoe trade. He came from Fairfield seven years ago and has worked with Miller's Footwear and Warrrer Bristow before opening his own shop across from the State theater, and later joined a Washington store in 1902 in Albia.
The salvage department requests all properly processed tin cans and waste paper bundles from outside Washington be left at the salvage bins across from the post office on or before March 11. Washington residents may have their tins and paper ready for collection by youngsters on Saturday morning March 11.
