Des Moines notes nine days remain for Iowans to file federal income tax returns by March 16. Single filers with net income of $1,000 and married couples with $2,500 or more must file federal returns. State individual net income tax returns are due March 31.
Cedar Rapids workers at Wilson and Co packing plant returned after a strike over seniority rights involving about 135 men.
Des Moines reports Max E. Duckworth former Woodbury county attorney conferred with Governor Herring. The governor said Duckworth represents a wholesale drug company and sought to sell products to the state. He referred him to the state board of control.
In Wapello county about 6500 quail died during the winter. Local sportsmen estimate half of the quail in the region perished and many farmers continue feeding quail.
Dr E O Giere of Minneapolis finally discharged a five cent debt from Luther College in Decorah O. He bought a collar for 25 cents at Ben Bear store and agreed to pay later. After returning to school he paid the nickel to Mr Bear this week.
Iowa flood scene shifted to Sioux City where ice from Floyd Big Sioux and Perry Creek rivers piled up on the Missouri near the south city limits threatening the area amid rising water reports.
Bobby Eppel and his family believed a belated Christmas gift had been buried in a Muscatine snowdrift since Christmas Eve. The wrapped package, containing bright snow skates, was discovered this week by John Alexander, a former police officer, and addressed to Bobby from Aunt Mary.
Iowa State college economists report in Agricultural Economic Facts that farm product demand prospects are better now than at any period since the onset of the low mood. The bulletin notes steady business advance since July 1925, shown by production of manufactured goods railroad carloadings construction activity stock prices and other indicators.
John Applegate Jr. of Globe Printing Company showcases a large stamp collection in the area. John Suon owns nearly 10 000 stamps with stamps from about 365 countries, including two dozen valued at $20. He has collected stamps for about eight years.
With 62 hotels and nearly 2000 other buildings hit by the Building Service strike, union officials planned a moderate extension today. James J. Bambrick said major hotels including the Actor, Waldorf Astoria, and Commodore would participate, with some members kept in reserve until Monday.
Nine rural schools joined the Washington township spelling contest at Red Brick school yesterday afternoon. Teachers Bernice Anderson and Helen Jenkins announced the winners who advance to the county event. Primary division top honors went to Evelyn Givans of Glendale school, Bettie Morrison of Red Brick school finished first, Arline Lambert of Pleasant Hill school placed third. Advanced division saw Robert Wheelan of Number 4 place first, Helen Baker of Pleasant Hill second, and Robert McLaughlin of Number 4 third.
District Judge John B. Purcell holds Norman Baker in contempt of a Supreme Court injunction prohibiting medical practice without license. Baker evaded the 1931 order by operating a Muscatine cancer hospital, later using dummy managers to lease the property while he claimed no practice in Iowa. He returned to the state last summer and disputed the contempt citation.
Stanley Brock at 1019 North Sixth Avenue found a dead baby mole in the front yard. The small creature measured a little over an inch and was described as a convincing sign of spring.
Washington county jail shows an unusual calm with only Ott Harrington remaining as the sole prisoner. Deputy Kiesey opened the building to fresh air for three hours while Sheriff Putnam and County Attorney Morrison oversaw Harrington’s six month sentence for forgery, already served a month in jail at Oskaloosa.
Snowbound roads and record cold keep Iowa’s “Typical Farmer” largely homebound. February tax box score shows $2.17 direct taxes, including $1.09 in sales tax and $1 for dog license plus two gallons gasoline for washing machine use.
Riverside woman Josephine Hula aged 28 from Riverside Town and Frank Perry aged 41 from this city obtained a marriage license in New York City and were married in the municipal building chapel by deputy city clerk David Barry.
Walter R. Brown of Washington has been appointed a state scale inspector under the department of agriculture. The position covers about one third of the state across 31 counties in the southern region with duties including regular inspection of public scales. Brown has previously worked as a corn sealer and served as timekeeper for the WPA project at the Grace Hill quarry. Daryl Methers will replace him as timekeeper.
Des Moines reports that the federal government will continue selling retail liquor permits to private Iowa citizens despite state law granting a liquor monopoly. Assistant attorney general H. J. Roelofs says a gesture may come, but permits will likely continue. T. C. Coffin of Pleasant Plain was in Washington on business.
Former President Herbert Hoover speaks on conditions in the patronage at a Young Republicans of Colorado meeting in Colorado Springs. The broadcast titled The Chance of Youth begins at nine oclock Iowa time and will be heard by many Washington listeners.
In Sioux Falls on March 7 three men died and several others were wounded in a failed bid to free an inmate from the state penitentiary. Warden Eugene Reiley was killed, Phil Ray and Beryl Meisel died, while Claude Carrier and George Collins were wounded. The attackers seized the warden during a breakout involving weapons given to the inmates by Carrier. A posse ended the siege after a shootout.
The death of Mrs. Mabel Dewey Brooking occurred at her Pueblo home after a long life in Washington and Colorado. She was 62, daughter of the late Judge Almon Dewey, Oberlin alumna, longtime church organist, married to Churchill Brooking, with a daughter Julia in Pueblo and brother Federal Judge Charles A. Dewey.
Prof. C A Fullerton of Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls will rehearse the Washington county rural teachers choir this afternoon in Washington. About 40 voices are expected to sing at the Southeastern Iowa teachers convention in Oskaloosa on Saturday April 4. County Superintendent Lester B Krabill says the group will deliver a fine program after Fullerton’s instruction. The study center met at the courthouse under Krabill’s direction marking the last center for the year with no outside instructors invited.
Iowa registrations show 619 658 cars licensed in 1935 up from 1934 by 27 508. 1930 census lists 635 704 Iowa families. 1934 registrations were 562 350 and 1933 total 562 802. 1935 receipts flow down slightly from prior year. County figures show 1934 and 1935 autos for Cedar and Des Moines counties.
