Giuseppe Zangara's arraignment for the murder of Chicago Mayor Anton J. Cermak was postponed to Thursday March 9 to allow counsel to confer on a plea. The delay followed a seven minute session and Zangara was led out with a disdainful air.
The Harlem Globe Trotters staged a high spirited basketball exhibition at Washington for the Ys Men club benefiting the Y.M.C.A. gate receipts totaled 383 paid admissions and net proceeds were projected between 35 and 40 dollars after expenses. The act featured flashy behind the back passes and rapid pace as the Trotters defeated the local Washington Y team 51 to 3 but kept close in the final minutes.
Governor Clyde Herring forwarded seven nominees for senate confirmation including Matt Cooney Davenport and Walter L. Bierring Des Moines health official. Eleven month old Patricia Ann Smith daughter of Mr and Mrs Merle Smith died last night at Rex Smith five miles east of Washington. Born April 15 last year. Funeral services set for two oclock Wednesday at J A Jones funeral home in charge of Rev EB Shook of Ainsworth Methodist Church.
Fletcher E. Smith Iowa Democratic chairman and electors from Washington County visited Washington D C for President Roosevelt's inauguration with his sons Willard and Stanley. They traveled by night and faced a West Virginia blizzard, witnessed a large parade with bands including Coe College, and noted security and aerial displays. The Smiths plan to return in four years for a second-term inauguration.
Local listeners are reminded to tune in to WSUI at 9 10 this evening for a fifty minute program by the Washington Municipal Band. Thirty five musicians will travel for the performance this evening.
